Typical really for the team with the worst disciplinary record in the league - We only conceded two fouls in the whole match and still managed to get a player booked!
I sat with Wolves season ticket holder mate so had to sit on my hands. Don't know how it looked from Watford fans or TV view but we were in total control of the game and should have killed it off. * looked like we could have upped our game any time but waited til they scored! We were in total control but too casual. * wolves fans had given up - singing "que sera sera we're going to Shrewsbury" and "only one goal you must be s**t", my mate crying in his beer at half time. Lots of compliments about our one touch passing game "like a premiership team against a division one team " * wolves have some good players and I believe it will take one win for them to get on a roll. * it could have been tonight because if Bond hadn't made a brilliant double save their tails would have been up and it could have been a totally different game * was very impressed with Bond- a confident performance and a good prospect * felt sorry for Forestieri as he was devastated by his misses - I believe he will have a big part to play before the season is up * I thought tonight was s big potential banana skin and although disappointed it was a late injury time equaliser, it is a point won not 2 lost and in the scheme of things we are on track. * but still **ssed off my £20 for a win double or quits for the 2 Wolves fixtures with my black country pal was thrown away in injury time. * next 2 games will show what we're made of - we're going up.
We paid the price for not being clinical enough up front. Plenty of chances and as the cliche goes, you've got to take them or be punished ... we didn't and so we were.
This was different to the Palace game, where the opposition put us off our stride and played their way back into the game. Tonight we failed to kill them off and suffered a sucker punch at the end. Although we were far from convincing in the 2nd half - watching the game, I never felt particularly threatened by Wolves, more by our own ability to concede silly goals late on. It's really disappointing, we looked to have the game under complete control and we were so much better than them for the first 60 minutes or so. Then we tried to shut up shop it seemed and stopped attacking with such venom and zest. Had Anya scored though, we'd have beaten them by a couple more goals. I agree with UEA, I can only imagine he was looking to cross the ball because there is no other explanation for curling the ball away from goal like that. Maybe he just mi**** it on his bad foot, but it looked more deliberate than that. Either way, it was a despicable miss. Forestieri should have taken one of his chances, poor and we expect better. Won't get any abuse from me though, he'll have a more positive impact before the season is out. I am sure of this. One massive positive was the performance of Bond. Made a fantastic double save and a great stop in the 2nd half as well. I was really impressed with how commanding he was on crosses and dealt with the high balls really well. You can tell he's a confident lad and looks like a very good prospect. He did a great job tonight, filled the large boots of Almunia very well. As for Vydra, let's not forget that he's coming off the back of a serious injury and he's only 20 years old. I expect he's feeling a little jaded now after hardly playing at all last year. Essentially, this is his first full season of first team football in a very competitive league. He's also a marked man, as we saw tonight. Wolves had 2 men on him at most times and he was almost kicked out of the game. A lot of niggly little fouls on him and it made his night very hard. I'd be tempted to start FF and Geijo for the next game. They linked up excellently against Charlton and should both be desperate to make an impact - especially FF considering his misses tonight. It's harsh on Deeney though, who played well tonight for little reward. We need all 4 of our strikers relatively fit and ready to make an impact over the coming weeks. The reason tonight felt so gut-wrenching to me is that they didn't do this to us, we did it to ourselves. We have enough experience out there to be better than conceding late goals like that.
What has happen to FF before he sign for us he would of knock one of them in and he lost the Wolves player in the box for there goal Watford at there best would of walk that game it seem to me that they thought they won it when we scored thinking here`s another win prem here we go does feel like a lost but if we win in midweek and on Saturday it would be a good week 7pts got to learn to kill teams off
I 100% agree he should not be abused, but it was match sharpness that stood between him and at least a brace. That carnt with the long hair should have been sent off after just a few minutes, when he kicked Deeney in the face with a dangerous high kick. I don't mind teams making a fight of it though. Nobody goes up from the Championship on pretty football alone. I thought Wolves showed a lot more fight and guts than we did, even though we were clearly light years ahead of them from the purist point of view.
I'm fine with a fight, and 8 men at the back, and trying to scrap out a result. I'm not fine with viscous fouls and tactics which were happening all game. At one point they had a player pull Deeney with an arm wrapped around his neck. I wouldn't have been happy if ****tu and Demerit were doing the same to Arsenal in the premiership.
After some sleep, my thoughts. Wolves to their credit had a plan, and they stuck to it, subdew Vydra and hope for the best. The first foul was to kick him up in the air, welcome to the game Matej. Then get 11 men behind the ball and defend, but much to our credit we still managed to open they up on several occasions, it was a shame that the opportunities didn't fall to our strikers. I would have thought that Vydra could have come off earlier for Geijo, and it would have given us a better target for the crosses. Mom for me was Bond, withoutbout him we would all be committing suicide last night, the defence was solid, but I remarked to the only other person in the room, she who must be obeyed that Sako was completely unmarked for the corner, god oly knows what Cassetti was thinking, as he knew he was there, and it was pretty poor closing down. But the game should have been buried by the time that corner came in, we just need to kill teams off. The Foresteri misses where both snap shots and perhaps if he realised the amount of time he actually had he could have done better. But a point isn't the end of the world, Wolves kept going which we didn't and they thoroughly deserved their reward, next game 3 points, then we'll all be happy for a few days at least. Sorry for th typos, bloody ipad!
Thought the same re. Deeney, then realised we needed him as an auxiliary defender. He made one excellent intervention to deny Wolves CB a header almost on the line.
Just a thought, but we all know on occasions our midfield goes missing and teams over run us. How about switching Anya to RWB and putting Cassetti the middle...using his experience? Just a thought! LWB either Pudil or Briggs.
Well, except for Deeney, Geijo, Chalobah and (judging by his finish vs H'field and his shot last night) Batto. Remind me again where our other 40+ goals have come from?
I was talking about the team last night and not sure you can say batto is a clinical finisher only having scored one goal this season. I don't believe Deeney is a natural finisher really - he has equalled his best goal scoring season this season with a total of 14 which says alot. So bringing on forestieri when he did meant we lost our goal threat on counter attacks because he cannot finish
Deeney isn't exactly a 'natural finisher' but it doesn't really matter because e scores goals. How many goal scoring opportunities has Batto had? If he got in the positions more, I think he'd score more. We've got 3 players (Vydra, Deeney, Abdi) that have got a decent chance of scoring most games. That's more than most teams around us. Palace have Murray. Cardiff have Campbell. Leicester have Wood and Nugent.
A disappointing result that felt like a loss. 5 points now we've thrown away in injury time this season. However, it was still a point..and who knows how important even one point gained last night will be come the end of the season. Still 11 matches to go..we are not going to win every match, neither is every team around us..and while it's frustrating that we now have to sit and watch Hull and Leicester's results this afternoon, we will still be 2nd or 3rd for sure with a nice home fixture to come in 3 days time (though by no means a gimme as they're on decent form) It was frustrating that we didn't go on and win last night..but do we really try and hold on to a lead, as some here have suggested? Wasn't it just 2 weeks ago we won FOUR-nil away? Hardly a side who defend a narrow lead! In fact, we've not had a 1-0 win all season! Although we didn't batter Wolves 2nd half (do we have an automatic right to do so?!), had Anya and FF put away their good chances, the result would not have been in doubt. I think 1-0 up, once 80 or so minutes have passed, there's always going to be an element of holding on to what you've got..but I don't think we were guilty of it all of the 2nd half. I thought we played fairly well, were assured on the ball..and I'm certain we will be there or thereabouts at the final shake up. I don't think Zola got his substitutions wrong or too late last night..we were winning, it wasn't like Palace where we were being battered, there wasn't much concern after 60-75 minutes. Vydra's having a quiet time, which is a bit of a worry..but so did Danny Graham..he tended to score in fits and bursts, even in his 27 goal season. Vydra's never played as many matches as he has done this season..he is bound to have a few peaks and troughs..I'm sure he'll come good again. Forestieri hasn't impressed much lately..ironically, since he signed permanently..but he'll come good..he's still fairly young, he's raw, he's still learning his game..once he keeps calm in front of goal, he'll be a real asset. Fans are entitled to criticise if they want (as some did on Twitter) but as usual they are the 'jam today' brigade, demanding instant success and failing to appreciate we are actually 2nd in the division. I agree about Bond being MOTM last night. I'd keep him in for Tuesday..thought he was outstanding. And btw..we've played 4 times live on Sky this season and in only ONE of those matches have we scored in the SECOND half! Let's hope we are 4-0 up at the break against Cardiff!
As annoying as that was last night it's still another point. One defeat in ten. Creating very good chances and conceded 2 goals in four games, three of which have been away. There is not a team in the league and possibly the country that wouldn't want that kind of form. Yes we should have won last night but as nice as it would be to win every game it just won't happen. We have eleven games to go and no doubt we will lose one or two. That doesn't make us a bad team it's just sometimes things will go against us, or we'll not be at our best or the opposition play very well. What I really don't understand is people describing the performance as bobbins or dire or terrible or just plain rubbish. We're 2nd ffs and there is a very good reason for that, we're a very good team. If you read some of the posts on here not knowing the result you might think we got spanked. Like Bristol away it's how we react and I fancy us to slaughter Sheffield Wed and prove some doubters wrong.
Is there anyone in this photo worth saving? No, thought not - just experiment on them and then burn the bodies I say - we can't risk the meat getting into the food chain
We should play Doyley up front more often, his shot on goal yesterday was actually heading on course!
That felt like a defeat in the end. We were not clinical enough in front of goal and lackadaisical for the majority of the 2nd half. No one really stood out as performing poorly. Forestieri's finishing is a bit of a worry and it's not the first time this season he's missed what looks like an easy chance. Bond looked very assured. Cassetti gave their full back a torrid time. Vydra found it hard going being marked by 3 every time he got on the ball. Wolves have got some very strange fans that sit above the away end, especially the berk in the hat with horns. The journey up and back was shyte and spent sat in traffic for most of it.
I don't think people should forget just how little football was played by all our loanees last season. Vydra never kicked a ball. Chalobah was just playing reserve football. Battocchio, Anya, Forestieri etc were bit part players. Even Abdi and Pudil weren't playing that regularly. Yet fast forward a year and they are all playing in a totally manic, highly competitive marathon of a league where 3 games a week isn't unusual. Zola's task has been to manage and oversee this..and whether or not he has been too cautious with his rotating and 'conserving energy' playing style of late won't be known until May. If we go up, we can look back and say he got things spot on, if we don't maybe some will blame him for it. But please bear in mind the likes of Abdi, Vydra, Pudil, Cassetti etc won't be used to playing over 30 times in such a relatively short space of time and they need managing.
Really was some very big points dropped last night and Hull will make us pay today. Still angry about the way we played in that second half.
They were always going to win this one. There's still a lot of football to be played before the end of the season.
