Right now we seem to be going through a very bad patch both on and especially off the pitch. Not knowing where we will if we continue to spiral downwards.

To attempt to brighten the mood, I put together a very small collage of images from our past to show that we also had these moments that we also went through together as a fanbase. There are bound to be others I could of picked I know. Nobody knows or can predict the future and the fortunes of a club can turn on a dime in football. Money is a massive rule of thumb and right now we don't know if we can ever trust what comes out of our owner's mouth.

But these are moments I do hope we can all return to sooner rather than later.

Would of loved to of been a "fly on the wall" in that moment.

Outstanding achievement, back to back promotions with a brilliant manager and a hard working side.

Not the best of times for the world. but we had this moment at least as a football club.

Two people we all adore and love for how they put Watford on the football map again

I never get tired of seeing this picture

One of those "I was there moments". Totally against the run of play, Liverpool were stunned.

Coventry and Oldham have had some really dreary times of late, Coventry's first promotion since being relegated from the top flight in 2001 was from League 2 in 2018, and Oldham have yet to experience a promotion from any division since they got relegated from the Premier League in 1994, but for most clubs (including Coventry of course), the bad times don't last forever!

Where did you get that ceefax screen grab from? I remember vividly looking at that particular one for quite some time as well as various others in the 90’s!

If you Google "Teletext final league table of 1998" it should come up :)

We really won’t. Most of those pics are from an era where it was possible to take on the big boys without having a Russian or Arab in charge. From a day when players gave a monkeys about the club they played for

football has changed so much since those days. The 84 cup final is closer to the end of the Second World War then it is to today

The reason I go to football and probably won't stop is because of the days out posted by @SkylaRose
There are loads of others of course and I'm sure there will be some in the future as well even if that is hard to believe right now!

Regardless of billionaire sheikhs and oligarchs, I don't think a repeat of 1997-98 is beyond us in the not too distant future...

The only shame is that all of our best moments aren't followed through. In fact most of my least favourite moments have followed immediately afterwards.

    Palace, Deulofeu, City, Relegation...

It's why I'm not a big fan of The Deeney goal. Yes a great moment but actually ended in failure. I prefer winning at Brighton or Beating Wrexham or winning at Fulham on the last day

Yes even that Nick Wright goal is tarnished by the fact that he barely played again due to injuries after that fairytale afternoon.

Tbf, we are a small club starved of success, I don't feel like disregarding brilliant moments like that just because ultimately it ended in failure (though there is definitely a more bittersweet memory of the Wolves game in the semi for obvious reasons). Our recent struggles have taught me to appreciate every little victory we have

I agree but the play off final was a crushing disappointment. If ever there had seemed to be a “written in the stars” story, that had seemed to be it. And I’m a natural pessimist.

It’s what supporting a basically crap football team is all about . It’s those amazing moments when you stick it to the big boys or that last minute goal . Regardless of who owns the club at the time or what happened the next season that’s what brings me joy from watching my team . We’ve had a lot of great moments over the last ten or eleven years but now it’s all a bit cr@p and I’m not sure when the next one will be .

Having said that you adjust downwards a bit . Staying up in div 2 at Oxford in 1990 ( I think ) shoudnt really be a classic but something like that could come round again .

If the rumoured Fire Sale of players again in the Summer happens to balance the books a bit (won't be many), our squad will be weaker than it is now and any signings we do make will be very cheap punts or loans. If that happens I would say staying in the Championship next season would be a huge achievement in itself. Not quite the Oxford moment you mentioned, but I would say on par when Boothroyd came in and changed our fortunes around.

I feel the same about our eventual promotion - losing the Championship in the last minute was one of the biggest disappointments ever. Completely took the gloss off of the Brighton game and the promotion (which to me felt inevitable - unlike lifting a proper famous old trophy).

I’m not sure if this season is just a blip in terms if maybe the top three and bottom three maybe just swapping places again, but I think this will become harder and harder. When we first went up big clubs like Newcastle, Villa and Sunderland were complete basket cases, now two of them very much aren’t. More and more obscenely rich owners are getting into buying English clubs and that trickles down with them looking to buy the next biggest sleeping giant. Of course you’ll still get the odd surprise package (Luton) but I think it will become harder and harder for this to happen. The game now and the finances involved compared to 1998 is almost unrecognisable, in the same way how we finished 2nd in the eighties was as unrecognisable to when we went up again in 98, but that was only even the previous decade, not 26 years ago.

As fans of Man Utd and Chelsea (along with many others at all other levels around the world) are finding out football is cyclic and at the moment we’re on a downwards curve. Success has happened before and it’ll happen again - just make sure you really enjoy it when it does!

Yes, we've been lucky enough to see 4 promotions to the prem in the last 25 or so years, 3 of which resulted in immediate relegation and one of which resulted in the second most successful period in our history. Promotion to the prem is only going to get tougher, and staying up for a smaller club is only going to get tougher as the 2 smallish clubs automatically promoted last season are finding.

Yep, realistically, we'll eventually see another cycle of PL football and a cup run, attendances will be back up to it's peak. Wont happen with these owners but they'll be gone in the next two or three years.

100%. It feels like a huge ending, but then, as a coda, there's a limp performance at Wembley and failure at the final hurdle.

Deeney goal was also a weird one from the point of view that Leicester went on to win the premier league shortly after, so they always have that as a response.

It was an incredible memory in isolation though, not just for us but for all football fans.

I've said on numerous occasions on here that I think we were very lucky to get promoted when we did, not that it was 'easy' to stay up for so long, but certainly easier than now. That wasn't the point I was making though, 97/98 was our promotion from the third tier, the last time we won a league. I don't know if fans at the time were 'expecting' it, sort of like our Covid promotion season, or whether our horrible season the year before realigned expectations, but either way, you can't turn your nose up at a league title, whatever division it is in!

The previous season I think we finished around 13th and drew a ridiculous amount of games. It was pretty miserable to be fair but back came GT and Elton and just gave the whole place a lift. Maybe not winning the league but I think most felt with those two back we would be in the fight to go up

Not to make one of the greatest achievements in English football about us, but those players who played at the Vic that day probably used it as motivation
