With Iggy again being in the right place at the right time, it got me thinking as to who was/is Watford's most 'natural' goalscorer.

What I mean by natural is a finisher, someone who once they have sight of goal your immediate thoughts are 'He's going to score' even though they've been anonymous during the game.

I realise this is going to be a generational thing, however for example considered two of the most natural goalscorers in the game were Tony Cottee and Robbie Fowler, in current terms Sergio Aguero.

I was going to include David Connolly as well, regardless of the sh!tty attitude that boy knew how to score and apologies for not including Cliff Holton or Barry Endean, they were before my time.

So the choices are (you can have multiple choices):

    Luther Blissett
    Mo Johnston
    Paul Wilkinson
    Kevin Phillips
    Danny Graham
    Matej Vydra
    Odion Ighalo

My personal opinion is our 2 most natural goalscorers ever were Mo Johnston and Kevin Phillips...with Phillips just pipping it - the number of goals he scored in that mediocre Watford team still amazes me.

Malcolm Poskett was another who was a goal poacher but not much use outside the box

I thought about him, he was pretty lethal in the box.

Billy Jennings weren't too shabby either and deserves a mention but for me but it's got to be Mo

Poskett seemed to get a brace every game. Don't recall him ever getting a hat trick.

MoJo for me too... certainly the most prolific goal-scorer in my life-time, i've a feeling he is gonna walk this one, unless there is a late surge of votes for kev phillips from the younger posters!
Shame MoJo was not with us for very long, but he and his partnership with George Reilly transformed our season when he came along. What an impact he made.. my first footballing hero when i was younger! What would he cost if he was around nowadays??!

    Wish he'd stayed longer.

This is the reason I went for Phillips.

Mo was absolutely lethal in the box, however when you've got Barnes and Callaghan on the wings and feeding off George Reilly there's alot of creativity there.

Phillips had to play with Peter Beadle (!) and less creative players.

    Johnston - 23 goals in 38 appearances
    Phillips - 24 in 59 appearances

why the exclamation mark after Peter Beadle? :D

Whilst for a few years he was clumsy and couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo, Ross Jenkins in 78-79 was sublime. weighing in with 37 goals. He & Blissett (who scored a mere 28 I think) were majestic that season.

Interesting that nobody has gone for Iggy yet... what was his goals to games ratio last season? and his being the top scorer in UK for the calander year 2015.. praps whichever bright spark claimed Iggy was 'unlikeable' was onto something after all! :D

Mo Jo got 23 goals in 38 games? Hardly enough to say he was the most natural ever off one season? I never saw him play but if you think had Vydra's first season finished in February some would be lauding him as the greatest lol.

You have to have done it for a good 2/3 seasons I think.

Colin West had a pretty good record for us too, althou didn't ever come across as a natural 'finisher'.
*edit* just googled it, he grabbed 20 in 45 games. not bad for an old fashioned 'target man'

Football was a bit different back then compared to the past few seasons and this was top flight stuff! I only just remember Mo Jo but my old man has watched from the 1950's onwards and says he is up there as the most natural.

i seem to remember back then the top scorer in the division at the end of the season tended to be on around the late 20's, goal-wise. One season Clive Allen at Spurs got 49 (from memory) but im assuming that was in all competitions.

Priskin and Vydra, for about 20 games, were incredibly natural finishers.

Danny G also gets some credit for scoring so many in a side that otherwise could have been relegated.

Mo Jo by miles, did not seem to have to work hard for his goals, it just seem to come so easy to him, Luther was never a natural, just worked his socks off for 90 minutes and chased lost causes

i was wondering how danny graham made it on the list with some of those names but then sombody mentioned priskin, the worst striker i think i've seen in a watford shirt

Priskin was worse than Devon White, Kerry Dixon, Micky Quinn?

I thought Priskin was good, shouldn't be on that list though.

David Connolly should be near that list imo.

Mo Johnston, without a doubt. Simply a goal scoring machine (at that time).

I also thought Mark Falco was very good for us in that one season.

We've had many better all round players, but in terms of simply finishing, Priskin (during his peak under Rodgers) is definitely up there.

there is unfortunately as you have pointed out a massive divide here between generations.

I just about remember watching kevin phillips, I was 4/5 at the time. I could not comment on his ability though.

In my time watching probably the most natural finisher is between vydra and ighalo, I would probably go for vydra. Vydra one on one always looks like he is going to score, Ighalo still misses a couple.

Yes Vydya scored something like five braces on the trot in his first season, I well remember when he got through on goal on a one on one thinking that he would score which invariably he did.

Ighalos goals seem to be different in that Many of his goals are out of nothing scored against the run of play, as against West Ham, this season Middlesbourgh last season

Surprised Luther hasn't got more mentions he knew how to score a goal,

was luther really a natural though? ok he scored a lot, but my dad reckons he would miss 6 easy chances a game too!

I know he's since proved to be an absolutely vile character but any discussion of this sort which ignores Marlon King's 2005-6 season isn't complete.

he certainly knew where the goal was, his career went downhill after he left us though. I used to get texts from my brother just saying 'dink' whenever priskin had scored.

he was not a bad striker though mag, but I don't think he understood the offside rule.
