There are 5/6 letters about the club in the WO and actually they are quite varied from "We should remember what Aidy did last season" to "this is the worse Watford side I have seen or "Boothroyd won't be here in a year and is making the Youth team feel unhappy" (yes somebody actually wrote that!)" What are the feelings about Aidy and the team within fans who sit near you? There is the usual current stick about certain players and the way we are playing which could be valid but I think some of the stick is rather harsh...mainly on the Watford Observer site I have to say.
I don't really give a monkeys about going down this season, we won the cup final last year - no one can take that away from us. We’ve already reached my goal for this season – beat Sunderlands’ lowest points total. Aidy performed a miracle getting us to The Prem(not, not) in the first place and anyone who criticises our performances this season (with a budget less than a third of the next lowest) needs their head examining.
Agree. No one with their head screwed on could disagree. Then again the stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.
I do get the feeling they are probably the same sort of people who were jumping on the backs of Lewington after a bad spell in his 1st season and even GT when we had a poor run.
Ady will spend the summer preparing us for a great season next year as his appetite for success and enthusiasm are without question and he is learning all the time, prepare for another exciting ride !!!!
I think some are miffed as to why Reading can be doing so well and Sheffield United ok whilst we have done 'poorly' and when Aidy predicted we would be top 10 etc, One bloke seemed to get most of his arguements by saying "a radio station said we were the worse team ever" and "my dad said Johan Cryuff would just be in the way in Aidy's team"!
No but the bloke said he has 'proof'. Bit of a dangerous and maybe libel thing to say in a newspaper read by the club?
I agree, however, they are not thinking straight. Reading have had a massive budget for at least 5 years and Coppell took several seasons to get to the Prem - Madge had made it clear at the end of the 04-05 season that if they weren't promoted in 05-06 then Coppell would have been on his way. Sheffield United have also benefitted from a much bigger budget. Colin spent over £4 Million on strikers alone last season - more than our ENTIRE budget for both transfers and wages! Radio stations were saying West Ham were the worst team ever in their promotion season a few years back. We have too many 'media friendly' enemies - Venables being the main one. If we could afford someone like Cryuff then we wouldn't play the same way - something the guys' dad was too stupid to understand
Agreed but I'd like to see our players respect the position they are in and put in 110% in games. Some recently look like they have given up.
If you take the population of Watford as 80,000 we are way above the expectations for our size, we are little old Watford making millions from the Premiership, and having a laugh on the way. 20th best team in the Country.
Good point. El Tel was the first manager to go on the TV many years ago and start giving off about the "ridiculous" slope of the pitch, bad loser!
At the end of the day I won't give up on the fight to survive before its mathematicaly impossible... said exactly the same during Lewington.
I sit with my Uncle and we both feel that although Aidy will one day become a very great manager, but his tactical naivety and team selections have cost us dearly. Add that to his plain stubborness to change our style until around a month ago, IMO it would be a fair suggestion that Aidy's leadership of the players is a major contributing factor in the season disappointments. However, I am in no way suggesting the players are not responsible for their part. I think Aidy was a tad foolish to suggest we could make top 10 at the beginning of the season, but if he believed that then he works with the players most days so most have had just grounds in his mind to make the prediction. Personally i think this has been his biggest mistake as it raised the fans hopes unrealistically. Looking forward to next season we have a fantastic group of players that have a much greater technical ability than what we started with. Players like Hoskins, Priskin, Williams, Cavalli along with the experienced gained by Demerit, Mariappa, Bouazza, even Smith and Henderson will make us a much stronger team/club and I'm certain we will see the performances we had hoped for at the beginning of this. Winning the FA Cup Final would be a nice silver lining to the rein cloud if you ask me
Its dissappointing because in truth, nothings gone to plan.... Our seasons been like a groundhog day of Everton first game ALL SEASON LONG When you think of the way Marlon King got injured.... how sickening was that? Incredibly we all kinda ignored it at the time as if to say, oh well, crack on and all that but how bloody unlucky can any team be. I do agree with some of the points re Aidy... He was very VERY foolish in the beginning to talk about Top 10. Whats so embarrassing is that theres only been a tiny hanful of games where weve actually played really well (spurs at home springs to mind) Bottom line though is we lost our only two quality players and didnt bring in any to replace them nor add to what we had. That for me is the most dissapoointing part of the season
More frustration than disappointment sums the season for me. Frustration at the blinkered approach of the management in persisting in such a basic game of hit and hope that are more akin to rugby tactics of just gaining ground. It was clear from the first half against west ham, our first home game, that it wouldn't work. Having said that, frustration at more than holding our own against 75% of the sides that we've played and being naively caught in the last five minutes so many times. If the games were only 80 minutes long we'd be in the top half of the table. It's still been more fun than travelling to Roots Hall though hasn't it. Looking to the future we have a very strong championship squad and will for once be one of the favourites to go back up. We may well not hold on to Demerit after his shameless marketing of himself and it sounds like hammer may be off too if rumours are true but we will still have a very good squad, probably strenthened more in the summer. So it's back to the prem for 08/09 a stronger and smarter club. i thank you.
