I know there has been a recent thread on those we hate but there have been some great ones out there over the years.

Rossiter was a very bitter man and despised himself for starring in those ads. He created two* of the most iconic comedic roles ever Rigsby and Reggie Perrin. He was an astonishing character actor (see his filmography to see the iconic movies he appeared in) and he was a legend on the stage (his first love).

He was full of self-loathing that he appeared in those ads as he made more money, and got more fan adulation for them then over his entire career. He felt he was prostituting himself and never came to rems with it (one of my best friends family were close/related to him).

As an aside, King of the Forum Memes, Kenneth Williams was ashamed of him 'prostituting his talents' for the "Carry On...." films.

*Some say three after he out Clouseau'ed Clouseau - Peter Sellers's 'Hollywood people' where exceptionally unhappy at him stealing Sellers's limelight.

As a teen I always enjoyed Jan Francis and Lloyd's. And Ms.Skornik. Renault Papa.

It's nasty a company had to try and exploit a precious moment in time for their benefit but the Sainsburys Christmas adverts did educate some.

    The film.Joyeux Noel.is well worth a watch.

Not really a debate is it. There must be very few ads which live in the memories of so many. Probably made Accrington Stanley the most famous club in the country at a point as well which is quite funny

I really fancied Jan Francis. I wrote to her and got an autographed photo back.

There was a rumour that the kid's parents killed themselves because they were so embarrassed.

I was looking for the first of these (the Whitbread one) but no harm in the whole clip for nostalgia:

I remember fondly the Maxwell cassette tape ads that riffed on Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues film.

Any excuse to play parodies of Desmond Decker:

Saw him at the Rainbow Festival in Cassio Park one year. Legend.

Well as the old saying goes, sex sells. So what do you do as an advertisment? Combine Sexy and Drink. No brainer.

One of the best, no sorry, the best cartoons ever made. Based off a classic board game yes but it is the only 80's cartoon series I rate higher than the Raccoons. Great stories and the animation was top notch. I don't care how good CGI is now, to be able to draw frames by hand that well takes a lot of talent. Kudos to everyone who worked on the series, and it's a shame it could be soon lost to history.

A favourite of mine when I was about 4 years old was this 'classic' Kia-Ora advert. Most people around my age know exactly what you're referring to when you say "it's too orangey for crows".

Then years later I found out it had been banned because it was deemed to be extremely racist, with the characters in the animation depicting the Jim Crow racial stereotypes - something I was totally unaware of as a young lad.

In terms of it's effectiveness, it certainly worked in our house - every Friday evening big shop at the local Fine Fare we always had to buy Kia-Ora because of it.

This was another favourite, because it's utterly mental. To this day when I hear the song I automatically think "24 toasters from Scunthorpe".

"And I can't decide if I will, choose a diamond ring or a drill". Genius.
