I think he's been averaging about 5 goals a season from open play since he signed his alleged £3.5m/year 5 year contract in 2016. Admittedly his 2 winners against Everton and WBA in Javi's 1st season were huge for us, as was winning and scoring the penalty in the semi. With hindsight we should've sold him at the start of the Mazarri season.

I feel like this is a discussion that is continually had so won't prolong it - but people do, and have, given them credit for their successes. The start under Silva, the cup run, the wins over Top 6 clubs - all these threads contain effusive praise...and many more. The club and owner have been roundly praised in the past for the stuff they did well. Don't see why they should not be equally criticised when they make poor choices.

And as much as time alone will likely see most clubs relegated from the PL at some stage, I don't wholly agree with the statement you keep making regarding our relegation being inevitable sooner rather than later.

It's due to the £30m price we have put on his head.

Agreed. Fair praise, fair criticism, neither with the benefit of hindsight.
    That's ok, we can disagree.

There is a recently vacated hole in Brighton's squad for an aging striker who has forgotten how to control a ball and gives away needless fouls.

I get that Deeney's powers have waned, I do think we need a change of direction and perhaps his time has come to an end now...... but he has served us superbly well for 10 years, scored 133 goals across 399 appearances in one of the best periods in the clubs history. Yes he has his faults, dont we all. But the bloke deserves more respect than some of the crap he gets on here.

Surely you've said things in the heat of the moment? Or had your head turned. Caps has manned up so can Troy. People's opinions will change incredibly if he starts banging some goals in and creating for others.

It looks like TD is going to still be here tomorrow night, which is not necessarily a good thing mainly because of the wages he is on. Having said that I believe he can still be a decent asset for us as an impact sub, all be it an over paid one.

He will also have value as an experienced leader, as long as he recognises his lesser status as a player and knuckles down to his new role as primarily a bench warmer and cover for injury. However if he does not realise he is no longer the player he has been for us in the past, he could prove a disruptive influence, but if he settles into his new role, his experience and leadership could still prove a decent asset.

Finally, if he could be persuaded to take a cut in salary in exchange for a slightly longer contract, he might still prove to be full value for money until the end of his career with us.

Not sure whether I’ve said stuff in the heat of the moment is relevant. I don’t earn what he earns or have thousands of people watching my behaviour or words.

And I fail to believe that asking The S*n to come along for an interview and photo shoot could ever be construed as being ‘in the heat of the moment’. It was calculated.

The most amusing thing would be if we gave them Troy, then the second after the transfer deadline cancelled Murray's loan deal, thus lumping them with two useless, err lumps, eating up lots of wages.

  17. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

You can’t cancel loans outside a transfer window I don’t think unless both clubs agree I don’t think...

As it stands, I think we will be left in the position you speak of!

Then cancel one second before the deadline.

Yes we will probably be stuck with both; the only solace is that at least we're only paying a smidgeon of Murray's wages, even though every penny is a waste. Also, has it been established yet whether Deeney would have had a relegation wage reduction clause?

Depending on how much faith you put in Adam Leventhal's knowledge, he's suggested (rather than explicitly stated) a few times this summer that there was no clause for Deeney, and speaks of wages in excess of £100k/week.

  21. Burnsy

Yet Deeney himself has denied being on 100k.

Looks like he's staying. Huge unecessary challenge for Vlad to deal with. Troy has considered himself bigger than every single manager we've had since Zola.

Well weight wise he probably is..

    ;)

Mind you if he ever got fit and motivated would be a better option than Murray and Success.

But guess that probably won't happen.

We literally weren't outspent though, were we? We just spent what we did stupidly, and suicidally allowed it to affect how we were prepared to spend subsequently.

  27. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

Yes the stats shared on this forum showed we were outspent and had one of the lowest "player wages costs" in the league. However because we were one of the smallest clubs with one of the less wealthy owners we had to mortgage ourselves to the hilt to even spend what we did. Some of the buys of course turned out to be poor but when you are buying at the cheaper end of the market that's always the risk (Sarr of course was the exception on the player spend side). That's why I don't see how we will ever truly be a comfortably established prem side. We can all hope but I think it's an unrealistic expectation.

  28. Not if the fanbase won't accept building a 30,000+ seater stadium elsewhere in watford that would allow us to become a reasonable size prem side... no

He absolutely deserves the utmost respect. Troy Deeney, quite rightly, will always be considered a Watford FC legend (at least by the vast, vast majority of fans). If he stays, I believe that he will hugely contribute to our promotion push.

His fans have been saying that for the last 4 years.

I just wish he would start banging them in, it is about time.

Maybe he could hold his own in the Championship, but he has made it clear that he thinks he is too good for us. He thinks he should be playing elsewhere, and I agree with him.

Funny how we persisted with him as our main striker in one of the top leagues in the world, ended up scoring less than a goal a game and got relegated. Yet a league lower in the championship he’ll probably just be a bench warmer. Makes you wonder where we might have gone wrong.

Probably because Pearson didn’t like Gray ,Pedro or Welbeck?

Even when Troy had a bad knee which with our medical record won’t be fixed.

Look at Janmaat- had about 3/4 operations!

Pearson bought into the generic media opinion that Troy is Mr Watford and our star player, rather than using his own eyeballs.
