Absolutely right. Could have done better with the header though! His flick for Chalobah was perfectly executed and had that been Salah or Kane you would have seen it replayed a 1000 times by now. Makes a difference to have better footballers around him as well. I'm sure he's very happy to have passes coming in to him on the ground from Garner and Quina rather having it lumped at him from the defence
Don’t remember this guy at all! ( Don’t mean Troy!) https://mobile.twitter.com/talkSPORT/status/1333298006708408321
He's had a strange career to date (he's from a place called Newtownards, ten minutes from me). He left Watford and not long after came back to NI to play Irish League but for a pretty crap team (his home team). He has since gone back over to England though and appears to be a regular at Crawley now. Can't imagine he's anywhere near the international squad but you never know over these next few years.
Being roundly (and rightly) criticised for his views on the David Luiz/Raul Jimenez incident this morning on TalkSport. The world and their dog have united in agreement that Luiz should also have come off - so of course Troy agrees that’s Arsenal kept him on. Says ‘players know when something isn’t right’ and he’s ‘played on for 20 mins with no issue...’ So why did they take him off then at HT?! And a concussion isn’t an instantaneous thing that happens after a head injury and it’s very likely a player wouldn’t even know he’d suffered one immediately. It’s things like this why the club should have put their foot down and opposed him doing this TalkSport gig. Brings totally unnecessary spotlight that’s easily avoided. Had got himself back in the starting line-up and back in the goals/assists...yet goes and says something idiotic and completely unqualified within 72hrs. Just shut up and play football man.
No coincidence that his best performance for ages comes after a game where he only won one header the whole time he was on the pitch. At this level, he's got a really good footballing brain and there's no need to get involved in the pointless wrestling matches and demanding the ball is always hoofed up to him. I think he used it to hide in the Premier League as he never really thought he was good enough so preferred to carve out the strong man niche. Give me a Deeney playing people in around the penalty area any day of the week to the tedious grappling near the halfway line version.
Yes did find that a poor thing to say. Luiz should have gone off straight away. Maybe it’s why Arsenal let in 2 goals?
I actually find Deeney quite interesting on Talksport. A bit cringeworthy at times but most of the time he is far more interesting to listen to than one of the many vanilla 'personalities' in the game. But his comments this morning about Luiz and letting players play on wasn't a wise move and not his finest moment.
That’s fair enough - but he can act as a ‘point of difference’ without saying things that bring unnecessary attention and clearly unqualified. Being a footballer doesn’t make him a doctor. I had concussion once when playing CB in my mid-20’s. Other bloke split his head wide open and was carted off to A&E whilst I had a golf ball sized bump on my head - and stupidly played on as felt okay. Came off after 60 mins with a bit of a headache but nothing more. Fast forward an hour and I couldn’t remember my own name. Day after I couldn’t count to 5 or remember my wife’s name. Genuinely terrifying.
The evidence from his own team mates suggests otherwise too. Will Hughes got concussed against Palace when Sakho elbowed him. Came back on, played like he was drunk then was subbed off again complaining all the while as wanted to play on. Then missed next 2-3 games with concussion.
Troy made some misguided comments on Talk Sport yesterday when talking about head injuries. I'm afraid he's so wrong on this. Ryan Mason, from experience, gives the opposite view. Troy Deeney says ‘players and doctors should be trusted’ to make right decision over concussions after David Luiz and Raul Jimenez clash (talksport.com)
Players shouldn't have any say in it, that's for sure. Especially if they've just taken a knock to the head.
Yes think this was talked about yesterday and agreed he was wrong with his view. Maybe have concussion replacements if teams don’t want to use up a main sub but certainly has to be dealt with more seriously.
A difficult issue to get right. How about making any player that goes down, and stays down, after taking a blow to the head has to go off?
Richarlison would never play again ! On a serious note they ought to go off and be checked out properly. I suspect there was a big panic to get Luiz back on and in someways maybe he wasn’t fully focused hence Arsenal letting in 2 goals ?
Was crazy to see Luiz stay on the pitch, albeit not exactly surprised. I don't know exactly how it would work, but they should look into having head injury subs, at the very least temporarily in the game until they discern whether the player has concussion or not, not counting towards the usual three/five main subs in the game
Agree but how long do you take to "discern whether the player has concussion or not" ? This is the key. I am not an expert so don't know the answer but you have to set a time. Arsenal say Luiz passed all the current protocols, but everyone is saying he should not of continued. So they are saying the rules are wrong, but I have not seen anyone say what the "right" rules should be.
Won't be long before all players will have to wear team coloured Petr Cech-style headgear like rugby players. Another opportunity for advertising too, especially for players with fat heads.
Irrespective of ‘protocols’ Arsenal, led by the manager, should have taken it upon themselves to replace the player, given that they had a perfectly adequate substitute on the bench. The bottom line, however, is that any decision has to absolutely be taken out of the hands of the players who, understandably, will always want to try and continue.
If there was a system in place where an additional sub was available for a head injury removed player then it may help relieve medical staff of making tough decisions. I'm certain that coaches put pressure on the medics to remove players as a very last resort.
That makes absolute sense, and for that matter any verifiable significant injury ie: fracture or blood loss. Particularly as we have large enough squads and have 5 subs already
Agree again in principle, but again you have not given any detail on what the rule should be? What you are saying is they should of taken him off as they had a sub on the bench to take his place, what should they of done if they did not have a suitable sub on the bench? You can't have a rule that takes into account the available subs, they are irrelevant when assessing the safety of a player.
I’m not suggesting it should be a rule, just that it’s the responsible thing to do whether you have any subs or not. The welfare of your player should come before the result of the match. The fact that they had Holding available makes it doubly strange to me.
Think we should go the full “it’s a knock out” inflatable body gear. Deeney has been playing in it for a few years now .
Bert Trautman played most of a cup final with a broken back . A few brain cells missing from the average footballer is not exactly going to tip the world off its axis .
Not such a bad idea this. A bit like a blood replacement in Rugby. 1 extra sub per side 10 mins and it's made permanent. Although it needs to be strictly controlled to ensure that it's not used to gain advantage by changing formations etc. Maybe they would need to pre-nominate a defender, midfielder & striker and the ref controls which position you bring on.
There are concussion subs already in international cricket. Football seems last to move, as usual. https://www.timesnownews.com/sports...erything-on-iccs-new-set-of-guidelines/471184
That brings extra complexities though. Lets say you start the game with two defender on the bench. They both come on and then a defender gets a head injury. People would rejig quite naturally. I do get your concern as the nature of any football club in the modern game is to use everything to their own advantage and the 'spirit of the game' is now long gone.
