Ive heard Walsall are favourites , would be a triumphant return for the lad, and I wouldnt be the one to deny him that

He's not gonna take a sideways step, simple as.

Agreed. Deeney stands to gain little with a sideways move. However he presumably stands to triple/quadruple (?) his wages with some of the Prem teams mentioned. Given how short a footballers career is, it would be hard to blame him if he did move.

I was a paper boy for a couple of years when I was at school. They have shorter careers than footballers. What should I have been paid to do that?

Obviously I know you are joking but obviously

    Supply and demand!

It was more sarcasm than joking. This nonsense that footballers 'have short careers' and presumably toddle off to the Kozy Korner Retirement Home as soon as they hit 35 bugs me. Most people change careers at least twice in their lives why should precious footballers be any different? They are perfectly capable of working after they hang up their boots.

Just list of clubs who might be interested and have a bit of money.

He'd want a go at the Premier league.

Can he not work after he stops playing football?

I think he'll get into MMA.

It's laughable that even Sky Sports still see us as minnows who have to sell our key players to Championship clubs. Absolutely hilarious article.

They're in for a surprise when we actually put up a fight for once.

This is the part where we sell Deeney for £600k (and a friendly match) to Norwich.

Just crossing the i's and dotting the t's at West Brom according to Twitter.

He's looking forward to playing with Vydra again.

Must be true then! I'm sure Benteke will be pleased.

We should tell all the other Championship clubs we are open to offers for Deeney and start an ongoing transfer tug o war that rumbles on till deadline day. We then don't take any calls on deadline day, wasting all of their time when they could have been pursuing realistic targets.

We then win the league with Deeney scoring 38 goals.

  16. Stick him on ebay with an £8m reserve

It was your choice that made it shorter. Nothing to stop you going back to it even now.

Wait, so is Troy going to retire to become a paperboy??

    Very worrying if true.

I'd like to see him get into MDMA and go around the dressing room telling all of the players that he has fallen out with that he loves them.

  23. because footballers are famously well equipped to go into the real world, post-football.

There's a finite period in their footballing career where they can set themselves up for life. Would you turn down that chance out of loyalty to your employer?

Any footballer in a half decent league will earn more in their short career than most people will in a 45 year working lifetime, no contest.

The fact that they earn it up front is even more powerful, since they can benefit from compound interest from a very young age.

Even a relatively modest pre-bonus championship wage of 7.5k a week is more in a month than most people earn in a year.

The problem most footballers face isn't the fact their careers are short, it's the fact they fritter it all away on stupid crap like gambling sprees in Vegas or wiping their arse with 20 pound notes. A small amount of future planning and most would be set for life well before their playing careers were over.

The trouble is they never learn the value of money. This is not actually their fault, the same would happen to almost anyone in their position. It's more or less luck whether the people around you advise you well or not, it's out of their hands.

Well they weren't born with thousands per week for kicking a ball, proper parenting would do a lot of them a favour, when Damian Duff was at Chelsea his mum use to give him pocket money out of his £40,000 per week wages and invest the rest for him!

You don't need advise to realise that in a career which will stop in your mid 30s at best, you don't want to **** all your money away during your 20s.

I find it very hard to believe that across a playing career spanning pre-academy, academy, first professional contract, young professional, professional and senior professional stages, not one member of staff at a club plying its trade at a decent level of football ever addresses the concept of planning for post-career financial health. We know our academy does this, because the staff have stated so in interviews (on top of things like emphasising academic achievement in case a playing career doesn't doesn't pan out).

This is without even considering parents, the PFA and the player's agent.

All of that is absolutely true is every respect until the last word. I don't think many agents give two hoots on how their client actually spends the money, just so long as they are making the money. In fact it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the agents actively encourage their players to be reckless with their money as a leverage or incentive to have them push for bigger and more lucrative contracts. I'm sure it's not true of all but not much I've seen makes me think it's far wide of the mark.

As with all careers, I suspect there are good agents and bad agents. I don't want to tar them all with the same brush, because I'm sure some of them work hard and are very good at their jobs.

I don't disagree that many agents fit the exact profile you just laid out, however.

I think Deeney needs Cavanis agent. If he can go from team to team for mega millions then surely Troy can do likewise.

Whilst it is of course a ridiculous thing to say - but having watched Diego costa in the final stages of the spanish league / champions league and world cup (yes i know he has been injured) but based on the evidence of my own eyes - i am struggling to spot much of a difference other than Deeney can hit a barn door sometimes

If Chelsea have paid £32m for him then Torres2 methinks

Agreed, Costa has had one good season and Chelsea have massively overpaid for a good but not top quality striker. Again.

So apart from one decent cross last night and also playing in the tin pot French league are we honestly saying Cavani is NOT overrated and over priced?

I am 90% certain it'll come to light that Costa has been lying about his age.

    This is him aged 19
