This is the BBC's pet subject. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/65718748 Does anyone see this as anything other than a victory for common sense and keeping women's sport competitive?
Used to love that show on a Saturday morning. Of course the wokerati would have the police round knocking in your front door just for mentioning the program's title these days.
Could be back on our screens any time soon. BBC would definitely have it top of the sports news before any of that bigoted "women who menstruate only" business.
TBF given how many sports have been vacillating pathetically about this issue, I think it deserves a fairly prominent place on the news agenda.
I think there's some fairly legitimate reasons for sports to be concerned about it and stuff like this is likely to become the norm. The obvious answer has always been to allow trans women to compete against males in an open category and ensure females can compete against one another, so cycling seems to be in the right place on this. It's bonkers how much attention the whole trans debate gets from the wider news media but then I suppose it's the culture war hot potato du jour. Anyone who our there getting serious about it because a newspaper told them to be furious is a complete muppet.
BBC go crazy for it. You'd think it affected 20% of the population the coverage they give to it. This was my favourite headline in a long time: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-65316057 As with most things, people (except the religious) are generally happy to accept people how they are and just don't want it rammed down their throat (so to speak).
Yeah, the BBC and particularly its website have been at it for a few years now. Blowing up a tiny minority pursuit and making out like it's bigger than it is. And it's essentially backfiring now the tabloids have got hold of the issue from the other end and won't let go. There's a trans lady round our way who wanders around in full black leather gear - hat, jacket, shortish skirt, boots. I mean, she's obviously only one step removed from a bloke and other than raising a slightly childish laugh when they're out of sight I suppose the vast majority of people don't care. As you say, each to their own, live and let live etc. But I can only see society becoming more hostile to her sadly.
Yeah I remember that. But this will alway be iconic for me. Saturday afternoon, homework done. Tom Boy Skyla sit's down and watches a sports programme for the next couple of hours. Des Lynam, Sue Barker all the greats.
It's a no brainer for me. If people believe they have been born into the "wrong gender" body then they should be supported in their wish to transgender. But they can't be allowed to compete in professional sport, especially if it is a male to female transition. As I've said on here before, I was born in the wrong type of body to compete at the highest level of sport. I've had to accept that and so should they.
Quite. A few years ago, the prevailing argument against transphobes was "sex is binary, gender is a spectrum". Problem is, sport has always been split based on advantages caused by physical sex, so there's really no case to be made for allowing trans women to compete in women's sports. Physical advantages, while diminished due to hormonal changes, remain. The split was never and has never been about gender.
Yep great tune. Whoever thought to coordinate the big bass drum 'BOOOM!" with the pictures of the snooker ball dropping in the pocket is the real calibre of person we ought to be elevating to the House of Lords.
There was (and may still be) a person who worked on the London Underground gates at Euston, clearly a man who wanted to be / dress as a woman. TfL clearly respected that and he just got on with his job. All fine other than people being a bit juvenile occasionally. All this screaming by posh kids with dyed hair about it isn't really helpful, like you say, it probably has the opposite effect.
They should let them race with the women but have their own competition. Like different classes they have in GT racing. I have no idea why people get upset about how other people want to live their lives. The mind and physical self are seperate things so it is very possible to have a female mind and male physique and vice versa.
Maybe not well known to non-afficionados of cycling, but Robert Millar, who was King of The Mountains in the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, now goes by the name of Philippa York. Don't know what the relevance is to this discussion, but you might be interested!
I can only hope that Philippa York is nowhere near the grumpy, touchy, miserable c**t happier than Robert Millar was.
Given the tiny number of trannies out there I am reassured that I'm unlikely to ever come into contact with a trans person so, as far as I'm concerned, it's a non issue.
Reassured? Why would you use that language for people who are being used as scapegoats to distact attention from elsewhere? Blacks, Irish, Gypsies, Jews, immigrants, people on benefits, gays, the disabled, just another minority group on the list.
Big spoiler for you. Many people who don’t change gender are seek attention everyday on hundreds of TV channels.
That's why I only watch Countryfile, Antiques Roadshow, Gardeners world and anything with Michael Portillo or Fred Dibnah
There is no way that Countryfile is not going to feature a transgender farmer one day. But you raise Michael Portillo and it’s not so long ago that people used to say Blimey, there’s always some gay on telly, I don’t mind but they’re shoving it in my face, they won’t stop until it’s compulsory, why can’t they just get on with it and stop bothering us?..
A trans woman and prominent TUC member has posted a photo saying that they breastfed their baby for the first few weeks of its life. Imagine that this will be the next question for Starmer and his front bench. Can only hope he has the commonsense not to be cowed by the small but vocal minority in his party membership and calls it out for what it is. The comments on it are full of people from the wider LGBT community condemning it, with several saying it's child abuse.
A story that is truly trans bingo. Congratulations to ITV for its reporting on water prices producing such a corker.
Completely bizarre editorial decision and have to wonder if it was done in good faith by either side. As soon as you show a trans mother talking about water prices, it's obvious a lot of people are going to ignore the content of the item and say 'why couldn't they just use a woman? World's gone mad'. But then I suspect the person featured knew this and wanted publicity to further their cause.
Good to see Mama Cass expose "gender fluidity" for the load of cobblers it so obviously is. Three cheers for JK Rowling
I don’t think she did that did she? What she did was criticise the weak foundations for medicalisation, especially for children. This isn’t a great surprise and it’s obviously an area where extreme caution should be exercised. That view can be shared by trans supporters and opponents alike.
