When you register here you need to respond to an e-mail that's sent out before your account is verified and you're allowed "in". This is to make sure we have correct e-mail addresses for members.

However, there have been instances where the e-mail sent from here hasn't turned up. In all cases so far these have been to AOL and hotmail addresses. The biggest suspect so far is that these e-mails are going straight into a junk or spam folder. Some e-mail clients see e-mails sent directly from websites as spam/junk and act accordingly.

So, if you haven't received a confirmation e-mail within 10 minutes of registering here, please check your spam/junk e-mail folders first.

If that didn't work, then please e-mail me directly using the contact button at the bottom of the forum pages. I can manually verify your account quickly if the e-mail appears to have gone astray.

In my experience AOL is a pain in the @rsenal.

They had a carte blanche ban on yahoo addresses. I made a couple of ebay sales to people with AOL mail accounts and they got none of my communications, then complained about my lack of contact on feeback.

My address is AOL so I guess that's why it didn't come through, guess I'll have to get a better email address then!

I'd set up a yahoo account if I were you. It's free and with the new interface gets rid of spam very well. Bonus is you can get to your emails wherever you have internet access.

you can get your emails wherever with AOL too! when I get broadband sorted out at home it'll be better as I won't have rely on AOL, or work!

    Eugh! Dial up.

I used dial up for years, couldn't really justify going for braodband. Now I've got it I couldn't do without it. THere's some good deals around at the mo.

Two others who didn't get a confirmation e-mail were using hotmail accounts. I'm doing some testing today to see if I can work out what's happening.

Just tested by creating a new user account from a blank PC and a gmail address, worked like a charm! Might have to find another AOL user with another account/screen name to try this for me.

The problem could just be me being useless with computers!!!! I feel really bad that you done all this extra work because I could register first time, sorry!

This forum and the software running it is quite new. Between us all we've already found a few bugs that have been fixed, and to be honest any investigating means I understand the new software a little better. There has been more than one instance of people not confirming after registering so I'd say it's not you, but the way some hosts like AOL handle e-mail. Don't feel bad :)

OK, more info. It would appear that some hosts, (especially AOL, MSN & Verison), block all mail with no reverse dns setup, (just like one from here). VBulletin support suggests changing to SMTP mail format rather than using the internal PHP Mail () Function as V-Bulletin does by default. I shall set this up and test this tonight.

Getting there slowly, but there's nothing worse than a confirmation e-mail going astray, so must get this sorted ASAP.

OK, setup as SMTP e-mails. I may have to send a couple of test e-mails tomorrow to those of you who don't mind.

Thanks Faith. The blank one was when I pressed OK to select your username but it sent the e-mail much to my horror!

The Hornet, one will be coming your way soon!

There STILL appears to be a problem with AOL, hotmail and verison e-mail accounts receiving e-mail confirmations so I've made a decision! From now on anyone signing up will become a registered user without having to confirm their e-mail address; as has been the case up to now. A forum as new and young as this one can do without losing any members due to AOL etc being fussy about e-mails received. So I'm going to do this for now and see how it pans out.

Can you track and log ip addresses? if so that may be a good way of blocking spammers.

Absolutely. They will still have to input the 4 digit code that's randomly generated so that should stop most spammers. I also have a few contacts that pass on lists of known spammers IP's so they can be effectively stopped in their tracks, (hopefully).

Good atricle in metro today about waysd to wind up spammers and those dodgy Nigerian bank transfer people. See if I can dig it out later...

I sold a car through Auto trader earlier this year and put my e-mail address on the online advert. I got several scammers trying to con me and struck up a conversation with one for a laugh. He ended up calling me uncle in all e-mails! Very slimey and clever con artists those Nigerians.
