Two lining up Sadler swoopJan 13 2008 By Graham Hill WOLVES and Watford are ready to make a move for Birmingham City defender Mat Sadler. Sadler may reluctantly leave St Andrew's if manager Alex McLeish completes the £1.5 million signing of Hibernian left-back David Murphy next week. The 21-year-old Brummie has had to play second fiddle to Franck Queudrue this season following the Frenchman's summer move from Fulham to join Steve Bruce. But McLeish sees the left-back position as one that needs addressing quickly, which is why he has targeted Muprhy. That could leave Sadler in the shade once more and he may have to look elsewhere for first team football. Queudrue could also be on his way out of the club but he still has more than two years left on a well-paid contract Mick McCarthy is a long-term admirer of Sadler but, with Blues still recovering from a change of manager and a failed takeover bid, the Wolves boss had to move quickly to strengthen his squad and appeared to have landed a new full-back in SK Brann's Erland Hanstveit. But talks with the Norwegian broke down this week, which could see McCarthy back in for Sadler. Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd is also monitoring the situation while there has also been interest from Stoke City and Ipswich. Looks pretty good to me... only 21, does anyone know anything about the player?
To be honest I know nothing about him. The move for that Murphy fella by Brum has been rejected though so I doubt Sadler will be leaving them.
Only that his "blunders" have gifted two penalties and a last minute winner to opposing sides since the beginning of December. He sounds too good to be true
According to the Mirror today, Birmingham are close to selling Sadler to Watford for around £500,000.
Matt Sadler matt has been rumoured and linked with watford for a while now, and birmingham have had a 2 million bid accepted for dave murphy from hibs, so maybe we can sign matt now they have replacement
This is what Birmingham fans say about him on there forum: "Did well last season. Is a good championship player and maybe after that with you until May he'll be good for the prem. What he needs is games and experience. He's got it here but in some repects dribs and drabs. Aidy would be the right sort of manager for him. It could be that a move away from his home town club could make it for him." "Sadler is a decent defender. He is a fighter, and will not give up in any battles BUT he can be beaten by players with skill, and that is probably his main weakness. When attacking, his crossing isn't the best, but if he loses out, you can see him clearly scrapping and fighting for posession to win the ball back. He did quite well last year, but there was certain games, and certain wingers who had the beating of him, and it was a case of him fighting and battling to try counteract the winger's skill. He doesnt have a great amount of pace, but he isn't necessarily a slouch. Against players with great pace he can struggle, and players with large amounts of skill can have the beating of him. yet, with all that, he was decent to good in the championship, and i think that the championship is his level. He will do well if you sign him and i think that if he comes to a club like Watford, it will be with a heavy heart for leaving Blues, but he will be ultimately a success for 500,000. he needs time and patience and im sure he will improve his all round game and become a better left back" "I think he'd be a good buy for you, he isn't a top level LB but I think he's good for what he does. He can't cross to save his life mind. " "Good championship player, and with confidence and OK Prem left back, he's reasonable defending and attacking, can't go wrong for £500k"
Well said. I'd rather have bloody Elton John at left back than Stewart. (jokes about Elton loving the rear etc.)
Brum have now secured his replacement, so if there is any truth in our interest, something should be happening very soon.
It's in Aidy's interview on Watford World mate :]] "Mat Sadler is a player I definitely admire and he's one name on my list"
i hope aidy can pull a rabbit out of the hat very soon. reading the various threads on these boards i fear for his future.
According to words from Aidy in the WO this morning he is hoping to bring another player in before the weekend. Looking At UEA's post above it was probably from the same interview.
I'll stick my neck out and say there won't be any signings today. Aidy wasn't too hopeful yesterday apparently.
