My prediction is that Marco Silva will be head coach by the time we play Southampton on Saturday.

Then he will be head coach of Everton when we play them on 24th Feb, then head coach of Arsenal when we play them in 10th April, then head coach of United by 13th May for our final match.

    Meteoric rise indeed.

Hindsight is complex. It certainly didn't do us any good in retaining his services and passing on the £15m. With hindsight we would have been better placed now, financially and probably results-wise if we had taken the money. We would have been criticised by many but if they had the same hindsight we have just afforded ourselves, they would understand and agree. Everton, with the same hindsight, may have left Unsworth in place and mopped up Silva when we became available for nothing knowing we would reject the £15m.

But none of us had the benefit of hindsight so you just have to play your cards as you see things at the time. 99% of us were delighted at the stance taken at the time, and that tells you that, without the benefit of hindsight, it was the right decision at the time.

  3. I'd rather we terminate the contract for 'fundamental breach' without further payment, claim compensation from Silva for the cost of getting rid of his boot room team, ban him from taking advantage of the information he obtained about the club in bad faith by getting a banning order on him, or any team he represents, from trading with us, or even approaching us, regarding players contracted to us during his time here.

Would be strange for football, but not unusual in other business legal cases.

    I can dream.

I personally want him to get another job and soon and I want it to be in England. I’m genuinely curious about his abilities, I would love to see how he would perform in another job. If he performs really well then it will be obvious that he basically sabotaged his role with us to get the sack. If he performs poorly then it will show he’s not what everybody thinks he is including himself. Either way I’d love to know.

Good post - although I would not want the Pozzos to waste millions on him - hope he goes back to Portugal. You could be right about Arsenal though - imagine he had taken us to 7th or 8th - one place behind them - his stock would be sky high

I'm intrigued by his next move. He seems to have ability to set teams up to play some lovely football, but equally he's walked out after half a season at Hull when they got relegated and been given the bullet by Watford in quite acrimonious circumstances. Hull and Watford, hardly two football heavyweights and he's not done well at either overall.

There was a bun fight to get him in the summer so we did well, I think clubs will be a lot more cautious now.

I heard that a couple of weeks before Silva left, Gino gave him a cigarette lighter. Marco said "what's this for boss?", Gino replied "it's to help you, because you keep losing your matches."

The bit of this whole saga which says it all for me is that Silva was absolutely shocked when he was sacked.

How anyone could act the way he has and then be shocked at getting fired for it is beyond me. You'd have to be a self-entitled ***** of epic proportions.

I think he was going to be sacked if we lost to Leicester on Boxing Day to be honest but got away with it then and then lost again against Southampton..

As for the comment about giving Gracia a whole transfer window.

IT DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE OUR MANAGERS DON'T GET INVOLVED. It's been 5 years why haven't people worked out why we appoint a "Head Coach" and what that means..

I think the owners had to give him as long as possible to turn it around and while we were comfortably 10th with a decent margin to the relegation zone I don’t think there was much chance of him being sacked. We’ve got a reputation in the media to try and protect and the need to demonstrate to new managers we show a fair degree of loyalty and patience.

As it is, from the average moron/thicko pundit we’re getting grief for sacking him while 10th, these people are obviously ******** and incapable of considering more than one factor at the same time, we could be joint bottom with 10 other teams after being top of the league a few months ago, but they still wouldn’t be able to comprehend the bigger picture. Even so, we’re also getting respect and understanding from a lot of pundits like Ian Wright, John Motson etc, if we’d have got rid of Silva much sooner with an 10-8 point gap to the relegation zone we wouldn’t have got the same support, plus if we are looking to avoid compensation and/or have case to sue Silva or Everton we need as much evidence as possible.

Obviously it’s a gamble as the longer we left it the more damaging it has become and the greater risk of relegation, but I think the owners timed it as well as they possibly could, they had to give Silva as much time as possible to turn it round and equally as much rope as possible to hang himself until we reached a position that we couldn’t possibly go beyond for the sake of the clubs future.

It does matter as the owners need to understand what style of play the manager wants to play to understand which dictates what's needed. They may not just sign who they want but they certainly get involved in what's needed.

Just seems like he's wishing him success and says he respects him. I wouldn't call that being massively upset. That being said, if he keeps posting stuff like this, I wouldn't begrudge us accepting a lot of £££ from Chelsea now for example.

Superb article, the best bit within the title itself: "no manager is bigger than the club".

Listening to some of the media "experts" you'd think the only reason to sack someone is league position. "Look at Watford, they're in 10th...what more are they expecting?". So if Silva had been found to have been kiddy-fiddling the U-12s, we should keep him on because we're 10th? The logic is ridiculous. He wasn't sacked for our current league position, and the fact that so many braindead former footballers can't see that is beyond ludicrous.

If true, it is a gamble for him in a number of ways. Firstly, legal costs are a killer if you lose. Secondly, he is likely to enhance his reputation as a trouble maker with potential employers. Your call Marco.

I don't blame Gino one bit in the whole scenario, he has been in a no win situation, he could hardly have accepted Everton's money or anyone's money for any current or future head coach when we are doing so well they deem they want to pay for them.

We are a club consolidating our Premier League tendure hopefully lasting many years, it looked as if Silvia was going to take us to our highest finish in the P.L. accepting money for him at the time would have not be the correct thing to do!

What Gino didn't know was that Silvia would not publically state he was happy at WFC and was going nowhere, and for whatever reason the wheels would come off results wise!

Going to court will harm Silvia more than the canny Gino, (who is well versed in these situations) hopefully for Silvias sake they agree what I expect will be less than the £750,000 it is reported Silvia thinks he is entitled to and Silvia can go and get on with his career elsewhere!

I'm not sure there's a great deal in this. Pay offs sometimes take a while to work out and legal letters are likely to fly around. Ultimately neither side will want their dirty laundry aired in public so the incentive to agree a settlement is strong.

Whether Silva gets a payoff or not will depend on his contract.
He should be entitled to salary for the length of his contract unless he has broken a condition of that contract. There is no compensation for feelings hurt or damage to reputation, because he's been sacked. IT;s immesuarably difficult to get rid of someone simply because they are poor at their job unless there are performance clauses.

Court action against the club is only going to hurt Silva with respect to future employability. The fact he's considering it would suggest to me that the clubs has decided that Silva did break his contract with the Everton stuff and they've not paid him up. - Good.

It's just speculation on my part based on experience of contract and employment law, but in my opinion it's a ploy to get a pay off becasue he has been told to do one with respect to salary. If it was me I'd calculate the financial and reputation risk and offer a figure for him to go away as legal costs and time even if you win could quickly escalate above what is being argued.
