He'll fit in well then as most of the current team can't pass to their team mates either. :naughty:

Don't know much about him, but he impressed me thoroughly for their first team in a game against United, I remember wanting us to get him on loan. So to get him on a permanent deal is a fantastic investment, he has quite a shot on him too. As far as I understood it the player (which we now know is him) in question could potentially of signed sometime this evening or tomorrow, if we get it done before 1pm, i'm pretty sure he can play Sunday?

Very pleased with this signing, we're one signing away from a squad that will comfortably achieve safety.

Like Kane, I don't know a lot about him but Houllier rated him highly and gave him a few games last season. A bit puzzled as to why Villa are letting him leave as he only signed a long term contract last year but perhaps McLeish doesn't deem him to be good enough and wants to get rid of some players so he can bring new ones in.

Would be a great bit of business to get him as I can imagine we weren't the only club interested in him. Another plus is that it's not a loan deal which has surprised me. Hopefully a deal can be done in time for the game on Sunday and that he's the creative midfielder we all wanted!

I remember thinking he had a big future at Villa when they won 2-2 with United! Is he a creative midfielder as such or more of a Eustace type? I presume more creative otherwise it would be a bit of a waste

Just did my research on the boy. Attacking midfielder, but with a bite, tenacious and a little bit box to box. Also scored "one of the best goals villa park will ever see" in a reserve game with a stunning volley. Hopefully not another Josh Walker, but this has Championship experience and has all the makings to be a very good player for us.

I would imagine that this means the end of Josh Walker seeing as we will have Eustace, Jenkins, Buaben and Hogg in front of him and McGinn back in December?

    Hi Villa fan here.

    My thoughts on Hogg:-

Quite a limited footballer but makes up for it through effort and determination.
Despite his young age is very much a leader, he's a good talker and will always give 110%.
Likes a tackle so is prone to the odd red card.
Won't offer you much going forward, but is excellent at closing down opposition and sitting in front of the back four protecting. Quite similar to Nigel Reo-Coker.

Overall I think he's a good signing for you, he was never going to make it our club especially at his age but he's the perfect type of player for a Championship side. He'll probably end up dividing opinions due to the type of player he is, but as mentioned before you will always get 110% from him. His debut against Manchester United summed him up where he came in and won the midfield battle alongside another youngster Barry Bannan.

Wish him and Watford all the luck this season.

EDIT: I wouldn't agree that he's an attacking midfielder, he can score the odd goal, but he's not type of player who can link up play to the strikers.

haven't been on the forum for a while, forgot my password :) but having been reading everyday!. just thought i would say that we have signed nine players this year ( i think i am right) and let three go, ok DG hard to replace and always going to go, buckley i think was good business , and don cowie stephenson's and winters contractual mistake.

so we must have improved from last year.

stats show that we are creating loads of chances, just need a striker. weinman just in to fill the gap for now, illewumo comes on as an impact player, sordelle will grow in confidence now he's been picked for england, now have an attacking midfileder in hogg.

i am sure we will get another striker.

apart from loach ,looks better than last year. patience and we will go up the league.

    come on the orns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

On a Portsmouth forum, maybe they played him in a slightly more forward role than what he did at Villa based on what the Villa fan said (thank you by the way) suppose they've seen more of him.

oh just a thought, when was the last time we signed nine players in a season and only let 3 go! surely we must have improved from last year. thats just common sense. we have more depth so shouldn't fade as we did last year.

    i am really excited

Hogg was born in Middlesbrough. A midfielder, he began his football career as a junior with hometown club Middlesbrough F.C. before joining Aston Villa.[3] His progress was interrupted by a cruciate ligament injury in March 2007,[2] but he came back to become Villa reserve team's leading goalscorer as they won the 2008–09 Premier Reserve League Southern section.[4] Handed a two-year contract in July 2008,[5] he was part of Villa's squad that won the 2009 Peace Cup, a pre-season tournament.[2] On 19 August 2010 Hogg made his first competitive start for Aston Villa in the 1–1 draw away to Rapid Wien in the Europa League Play off. Due to injuries to several other midfield players, he made his Premier League debut in the home match against Manchester United on 13 November 2010.[6] In December 2010, Hogg signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2013.[7]

We have improved out squad depth yes, that is plain for all to see.

Whether we have improved the overall quality of the squad (including Weimann and Hogg if the latter transfer goes through) remains to be seen. Way too early to judge. Only time will tell if we have a better squad than last year.

Never saw him play for Portsmouth, but that is interesting, he has played a more attacking role from time to time, but he was mainly the more defensive midfielder for our reserves whenever I seen them play. I just don't see him as anything else but a defensive or box to box midfielder personally. His strengths are his energy and tackling and not his passing ability.
