Why not let Gino take on the position of head coach, see what it's like & then sack himself.

Or just rotate the role like on ‘Have I got news for you?’ This week, Javi Gracia, next week Jo Brand.

I like the idea of having a panel of managers. Gino could pick which manager to use for any individual opponent.

Seems everytime a manager fails, the main fault gets analysed and then they bring in the total opposite. Manager too soft? Bring in Mr shouty. Manager too defensive? Bring in Mr who gives a damn about defending. Manager too moany? Bring in Mr I'm happy with everything and everyone.

    Not complaining, just noticed.

    Agree.

Dyche > Zola for the sexy football.
Zola > Sannino for the discipline
Sannino > McKinley/ Garcia because they were (apparently) likeable and had knowledge of the English game
Jokanovic because he was too hard to have a heart attack and had talent
Joka > Quique because he was better looking and Joka was too open
Quique > Walt to reinstall discipline and tactical fluidity
Walt > Silva because he looked into Gino’s eyes and hypnotised him. Plus sexy football.
Silva > Gracia because he isn’t a snake, doesn’t have an ego, is loyal and likes to develop players.

I imagine we’re due a more attacking manager next, my guess is at the end of next season.

Somewhat concerning that Gino’s recruitment strategy is so all over the place.

I question how much intuition he has in this area.

I don't think his attitude, to bring in a coach to patch the current problems in the squad, is a bad technique. Plenty of clubs leaking goals for instance will bring in a defensive coach, or those with dour football will bring in someone who's a little more exciting.

I do however think Gino's strength - that he is so involved in the club - is also his weakness when finding long term solutions. It must be incredibly difficult to work with a boss who limits your control, breathes down your neck and micro-manages you. Unless you're a very easy-going coach enjoying lots of success, that relationship is likely to break down sooner rather than later.

I guess it depends on what you assume you have in your control when you take the job. Each coach has come in and asserted their own style of football, and have been allowed to do that. They've never had control of the transfers etc, but that must have been part of the job description.

Seems like they have the freedom to coach how they want, but that's where it ends, and if you sign up to that you can't complain about it. Certainly doesn't seem like Gino or anyone else interferes with playing style or team selection?

But he does regularly watch over training and speaks to the players without the manager present about the style of play etc. which definitely are things which would sit within the Head Coaches remit.

I’m fine with signing up to a job which gives me very specific jurisdiction, but personally I’d be annoyed about the hands on nature of the owner when it came to intervening in my area or constantly monitoring my day to day work. Maybe that’s just me.

True to a point. But Silva got Carillo. And QSF got Jurado. And Walter got Zuniga. Whilst not the overriding word, I think our managers definitely have a say in certain players coming.

And I have had the honour of having to look that up, but I don't feel too bad about it. But don't tell my daughters. By the way, if if he ever turns up at the Vic again, should we boo him, but avoid hissing him?

It’s the yo yo coach thing which I just hope we grow through.

If Gino wants specific coaches for specific circumstances, we’ll never break of the cycle eloquently described above.

GT was a first rate manager in all four divisions, as is Saint Eddie, so it’s not just an old school thing.

Sometimes you have to trust people to learn & develop.

Guidolin must have done this under Pozzo pere.

I fancy Joka could have done it for us.

Gracia seems to have the character to be able do so.

  31. nascot

Maybe. But then he's had 11 clubs in 11 years so maybe he's not the type to hang around and develop.

And me. The coach gets the blame, but if his methodology is contantly being dictated, that seems unfair. (And I can tell you, it certainly seems like it). Being monitored is one thing, but getting the blame when you had no choice to do it any other way....Of course, Premiership coaches are compensated with lotsa money.
