I am right in saying its bs that has being going on for hundreds of years though, that cannot be disputed. I think its ok to say that fault lies at more feet than just the animals that did the awful deeds in October. Plenty of innocent and not so innocent people on both sides yet the majority on both sides suffer the consequences of the actions of the minority which fuels more hate, which leads to the next attack etc, etc. I'm just outside looking in which gives me an unbiased opinion but I do try to not look at world events as they are just so depressing and quite obviously being orchestrated by a few psychopaths.

One thing I still can't get my head around is how the h*ll did hamas manage to pull off such an attack without the IDF knowing anything about it? Has there been any more information coming through about that?

The implication of that train of thought is quite appalling, isn’t it? It did occur to me at the start, but I put it out of my mind as being way too cynical.

There's a very frequent Israeli (ex-squaddie before emigrating and joining the IDF) poster on the ARRSE who writes some very insightful stuff. He was asked this and ISTR his answer was "Now that's a very good question..."

Just to clarify I think it is appalling that Jews all over the world are being targeted by some numpties unable to separate the state of Israel to some man, woman or child living thousands of miles away that might not even support Israels actions. I say the same for any Muslim being targeted the same way for the acts of Hamas or other terrorist atroocities carried out by twisted ideology around the world.

What is the ARRSE and why didnt they have a rethink of the acronym?

absolutely no clue. There were lots of whisperings that Israel knew what was about to happen but not the timings. That IDF teams were sent to the border but saw no clues of what was about to happen but I would be guessing

for the second time in its existence there’s obviously been a major major info breakdown but only Netanyahu can tell you why

The paragliders coming over undetected in probably one of the most scanned areas of airspace on the planet is a strange one, they can detect small rockets but not paragliders. Might be a tech issue but I imagine paragliders would show up just as much as a faster travelling rocket on any detection system. Rabbit holes of false flags and religious nuts getting boners for holy wars open up though so I'm not going down there.

I think it’s more the slow response, rather than the attack, which will be the focus.

There is probably always intelligence that Hamas and other groups (and individuals) are plotting attacks against Israel. It’s easy to become used to them not happening or being dealt with. There was supposed to be a ceasefire too.

These things often only seem obvious after the event. So after 9/11 suddenly the reasons why a number of people wanted flight simulator lessons (and weren’t too fussed about landings) became clear after they attacked a target that had already been attacked once before.

It can all seem forehead-slappingly obvious after the event, but anyone, anywhere can be vulnerable to hostile intent.

I don’t buy conspiracy theories, ie. Netanyahu allowed this to happen to give him a reason to look to destroy Hamas for good or 9/11 was known about but again created a reason for US troops to invade other territories

what I do believe is that there was a major breakdown in information leading to a massacre of Israelis which led to a war where many innocents have been killed on both sides.

I also know that it has probably created even greater resilience amongst Israelis that peace will never be made with Hamas, greater resilience amongst Arabs living in Gaza that retribution needs to be sought versus Israel and a global uprising to weaken Israel’s ability to defend its borders

and all the while the hostages have still not been returned…

To form an unbiased opinion you need to “look at world events” and form an informed opinion based on history, religion, land, culture etc

there are many on this thread who have put across strong opinions based on facts. If you want to form an opinion on this situation then try reading it or googling Judea and Samaria, Romans renaming the area to Paleastina, the creation of Israel and how Arabs and Jews were displaced, Six day war and the capture of Gaza in 1967, the Hamas charter and their brutality to their own people let alone their vision of Israel, Israeli zionists and their view of West Bank etc

The IDF were striking/ quitting over BN’s court power grab which can’t have helped.

There were a few intelligence officers who reported that something was coming, but were ignored (they don’t know if anyone ever read their reports).

From Times Of Israel live blog, 00:39 UK time "Channel 12 quotes a “senior Israeli official” pledging an ‘unprecedented response’ to Iran’s attack and urging Israelis not to go to bed due to what is coming Tehran’s way."

It looks like Iran's attack may have been more symbolic than all out aggressive.

From the analysis I just heard on 5live, this could be considered as the "minimum" response that Iran could have done to "save face".

Over to Israel now. There will be the hardliners in their government that will want to strike back and ratchet this up.

Hopefully the more moderates and Israeli allies, such as the US, will persuade the Israeli government to "draw a line" under this part of the conflict with both sides having "honour satisfied".

The next few days will be crucial.

Iran couldn't have been clearer it was attacking. This was whatever the opposite of a sneak attack is and that very much hints at symbolism rather than any serious intent to provoke a further response. Obviously extremely scary to be on the receiving end of it but what happens next is entirely Israel's choice. The US have already told them they won't participate in any further escalation or reprisals against Iran.

But to which god? Us wailing wokes will have to debate that in our bomb shelter. Which, by the way, is completely open to all and so we’ve left the door on the latch just to be more inclusive.

I wonder how much money US and UK weapons contractors made lastnight? There better be enough VAT to fill in a few potholes on my local roads or I am going to write a strongly worded email to my MP.

Might be worth editing the title of the thread to Israel vs Anyone that thinks their hard enough to take on the military might of the USA.

There is strength in what happened overnight. Such a massive attack with 0 success. Now, let’s hope that Israel uses this to fix their relationships with the west and focus on the hostages and Hamas.

But with Bibi at the helm who knows…

Completely agree. Iran basically even said that after this they consider the matter closed, which is hilarious given the limited damage it caused.

It’s allowed the Iranians and their supporters to say they responded to an attack on their embassy. The West to say they repelled a coordinated attack, and defend their position on Israel. And the Israelis to demonstrate their “defensive prowess”.

So in a way, a large scale (weak and predictable) attack has calmed tensions for many nations.

As others have said, the ball is in the Israeli’s court now. Not responding will go a long way towards a longer term, peaceful solution.

Whether the extreme members of their cabinet are happy to allow that however is another question.

The same with Russia, who are pumping money into Iran (and the United States and the EU) to distract the West away from Ukraine.

Israel and its partners will never have a better excuse to obliterate Iran's nuclear weapons programme. The world will be a safer place if they do, so come on Joe, come on Rishi, come on little Macron - let's get the job done before it's too late
