But then in recent days haven't you suggested such prolific striking options such as DJ Campbell and Alan Lee?

I think the majority would have preferred HH than either of those two .

Gutted. However I wonder what this means for the Hendo rumours? He stays I hope.

Was a fantastic opportunity for HH. Bolton is a good team and I think he'll do well there.

    I just wonder now - who's Aidy's plan B?

A lot of people brought the spin last year about the Young money, I can see peoples opinions now changing if we don't bring in at least 1 quality signing, especially with potentially another jewel going to leave in the next 40 days before the window closes.

At this point in time, whatever striker we sign proven or not I would have kept Hendo, work rate is very underrated imo and he scored a large % of the goals that got us up.

So what will Doug's next username be on here then?

Good luck to Heidar it's a far better move for him than to come here, I actually think he'll do well there.

I agree with the general opinion on the subject. Henderson must now stay unless Aidy can secure a better targetman (don't think many were better than HH).

DJ Campbell is about as appealing as a horse sh*t sandwich.

If we actually sign this clown, Brum will be laughing all the way to the bank!

This is another punch in the guts for us as fans. If we sign someone of the calibre of Campbell, then sell one or more of our first teamers before the curtain goes up, I will be disgusted. We have the money there to bring some real excitement to the team, but are hoarding our cash like misers. I am not talking about failing to sign H in isolation, but in our total failure to capture anyone, bar Jobi (perhaps) who will really add to our first team. A broad squad is all very well, but when it is packed with the mediocre, the untried and the ancient it will not get you promoted.
Aidy has put the cat amongst the pigeons now, by claiming he is going to sign at least 2 more players. Expect now to see either two very mediocre players, who will excite none of the fans, or more backtracking, with AB declaring that he is happy with the squad as it is and that the 2 signings that never materialised were never really of interest to him anyway.

    Totally agree

It makes me laugh when people say on here get rid of the hendo type player and bring in someone like Robbie white line Fowler, yet as it stands with hammer and Jobi we have pace and delivery down the flanks that a target should hopefully thrive off.

I would say less appealing than that.

I may pop down the road to see Mr Gold at the Anne Summers head Office later and tell him where he can insert DJ instead of his normal butt plug.

In fairness H was always quoted as wanting to stay in the Premiership, and I guess we can`t blame him for that - although I am really disappointed.

I wonder how his sale to Fulham was conducted, and whether he really left on good terms with the club - sometimes these things can come back to haunt you.

Campbell is a big gamble - and if the reported £2 million is correct, smacks of some desperation in my book.

The Irish lad probably has better potential - but we need a quality proven striker at this level or better.

Now we have missed out on H it would be crazy to break up Marlon`s partnership with Hendo.

Most people bought into the 'good deal' spin with Ashley.

Aidy's repeated attempts to sign good players should show once and for all that we shouldn't sell our stars unless the player has dropped their game. We simply can't compete for the besst even if we have the cash.

In saying that, as much as I would like to see H back I also believe that it also could have been a mistake.

I don't get the anti DJ Campbell feeling either - good player with a good attitude. Whats the prob?

People are probably suspicious that a player who only 24 months ago was clogging around at Yeading with no sign of being picked up by anyone could now be joining us for a near club record fee. Also, given that Aidy promised a signing that would excite the fans, I don't feel DJ does it for me.

I would think the price-tag was with options - i.e. 1 mio up front and the rest depending on performance.

There's no doubt Aidy was thinking of HH when he said that and there's no doubt in my mind that Aidy thought he had him bagged. However, I do not think Aidy - for one second - thinks that DJC will excite anyone but B'ham fans when we pay 2 mio. That said - DJC may actually turn out quite exciting - who knows.

I’ve never been impressed by D.J, I couldn’t see why Steve Bruce signed him, and this seems another example of us paying over the odds for an average striker

You could have grounds to have said that about H now though. Scored very poorly this year and in a rubbish team was thought by some of their fans to have been lazy and disinterested - other than when he played us.

Lo and behold his value has risen and he is in the position to hold out on his wage demands. That's football right now.

We know that a revitalised H would have beeen great in the champ again but in reality he is also overrpriced.

Not at all. He didn't score much because he wasn't played much and was in a terrible team with no service.

I don't think wages would have been a problem, as he said that if a Premiership club didn't come in for him he'd love to come back, therefore he would have taken a slight wage drop to be here. Instead a pretty successful Prem team wanted him and, understandably he chose to go there, which I don't think anyone can hold against him.

£2mil was most definitely not overpriced. When he originally went to Fulham he was well received and scored whenever he played. That was when he was worth £1.3mil (although he was clearly worth more), in today's inflated market a premiership striker with a pretty decent goals to games ratio going at £2mil is fine, when you consider Young, a pretty good winger without the ability to cross went for £9mil and Chopra, prolific against poor Championship teams went for £5mil.

Everyone does seem to think our chances have decreased in the past week. We still have a squad capable of beating the **** out of the league and there is plenty of time to get transfers in. I do not however want to see us mericlessly splashing cash on players just because they have a big price tag as some of you are suggesting.

Two years ago Reading beat the **** out of the league, we didn't, although we made it via the Play Offs.

is the squad now any better than then? Not IMHO.

Will the squad be weakened further by key player departures? Almost certainly.

Will the current crop of players be enhanced by some more signings of better quality? God I hope so, but sadly can't see it.
