But they did talk about it. They replayed it several times and concluded that Silva was highly 'theatrical' about it but that his foot was being trapped by the goalkeeper - not much, but enough to make it a penalty.

But did the football world go into meltdown over it? Has it received the same level a publicity as Richarlison?

Our defending does need to improve. At set pieces the zonal marking looks shaky and we don't seem alive to short corners. The bit where Pedro was is also a 'zone' and we should have shut it down quicker.

Mistakes we can do less of and we needed to have shut down the supply of crosses faster by giving Holebas more support.

Not at all displeased with a great performance, but there is room for improvement.

Well it wasn't on live TV* and didn't involve one of the big boys losing - plus as you say yourself unlike Wenger Dyche didn't make a fuss probably because he knew in reality it was a penalty.

*No Graham Poll for example to make a big fuss about.

Maybe the refs will comment on it tomorrow like they usually do on Sky..

I'm surprised at you Malteser! I seem to remember winning 5-0 at the Bridge, admitidly not in the PL, but it was the old 1st division, which was the "Top Flight" at the time ;)

Great day out and a great performance. We're a really good team and I don't think I've ever said that in 20 years of supporting Watford!

Can't grumble too much about losing though, our finishing and defending wasn't quite good enough, but so much cause for optimism nonetheless.

The decision to take off Deeney was a costly mistake by Silva, but he is a young coach and will learn. He is doing an otherwise excellent job.

Finally, what a joy it is to see player like Pereyra in a Watford shirt. Please find a way to stay fit, Roberto!

Silva cost us that game. Really frustrating. But as others said, young coach who is still learning.

Great to watch us at the moment. And Mazzarri said we didnt match his ambition hahaha.

  10. Silva and the players were na*ve but they will learn, Cleverley aside this is the first time they've been at the sharp end of the prem.

Great to see the comments in this thread, not an overreaction in sight. We played really well and it was the sub decision of bringing Deeney off and Watson on (although the Deeney off part was the issue however bad Watson was) which was incorrect. End of the day we deserved a draw but it always felt like Chelsea would nick it towards the end.

Just praying now we bounce back from the defeat like we did against City, it happens. COYH!

As is the norm these days and most want to find a scapegoat and blaming one individual for the loss then it would be Richarlison!
He ran straight past Pedro to stand in space for the short corner on the first goal and missed two sitters, the result could have been 4-3 Watford!
Now, I would never put all the blame on him solely as he is such a raw talent that he will inevitably make mistakes and that's all part of his learning!
We win as a team and lose as a team!
Silva is a very hands on coach and will surely watch this game over and over then sit with his players to discuss where we went wrong and how to try and not make these errors again while also learning from his own errors in the substitution.
After only 9 games he's got his new squad competing with the elite top 6 in the EPL! Where will we be after the next 9?
You have got to love the fast turn around his new Watford have made from May last year! I'm gutted about the result but so excited about what is to come! COYH!:)

How did Silva cost us that match? Had he taken off a defender for a forward and we’d lost I could understand that logic. But he didn’t. He realised we were struggling to hold on for a draw and tried to tighten us up, while also hoping to free up a little more space up top for Carrillo and Richarlison. I didn’t understand or like the substitution either, and felt sad we were trying to settle for a point after such a wonderfully spirited and adventurous first 75 mins. But it was a substitution that, if you’re being honest prevented us winning the match rather than made us lose it.

It was our woeful finishing that cost us the match. Our inability to really kick our opponent when we were so dominant. And our inability to defend crosses. Whether we had Watson or Deeney on the pitch for those final few minutes, it didn’t stop our defenders not dealing with crosses or equally fannying about with the ball on the edge of our box, needlessly giving it away. A bad decision by the officials also helped cost us the match too of course for the first goal.

Silva should be applauded for taking us to home of the champions and setting us up to play in such a wonderfully positive and expressive way. We aren’t a side who parks the bus. Yes that occasionally results in tonkings like Man City, but equally it makes our matches a joy to watch. We’ve now scored 2 goals in all of our away matches, and netted 5 against Liverpool and Arsenal at home. This is a wonderful season so far and while I totally agree the Watson substitution was a bizarre one, I don’t think it’s fair to say it cost us the win. I’d have love to have seen us bring on Gray at that point for one of our three Centre backs and really throw caution to the wind, but equally that move could have left us more exposed at the back too.

And Cleverley's thanking the stars he's out of that wrong sharp end of the prem as we speak, so to speak.

    Everton fans never deserved him.

Granted there were a few errant passes, but I applaud the approach Silva has instilled in the players in trying to actually play their way out of trouble and keep the ball on the deck to try to build the next attack, even if it doesn't always come off, whatever the caliber of opposition. Much better than just aimlessly pass it backwards and side to side and/or just hoof it upfield when under pressure or lacking ideas. There has been very little long ball this season which has made our play so much more satisfying to watch than much of the last two seasons.

I love the way we approach our opponents without fear home and away, while striking a sensible balance between merely reckless and treating the opposition with too much awe.

Can see Marco's intentions bringing the ginger pele on, as we all know it was a mistake but as much as Hughes would of provided more attacking threat would he of looked just as lost as Watson with no game time?

I was pretty gutted at the end , however at least I don’t support Crystal Palace , Bournemouth or Everton

I just hope we beat Stoke and at some point give someone a right kicking as we need to improve goal difference (although to be fair doubt if anybody that had played Man City has a positive goal difference)

We are no longer one of those teams that try and nick a point here and there. It might get us a leathering every now and then but we are not just trying to stay afloat we are actually going after these bigger teams. Such a great time to follow Watford isn't It!

I know Deeney could hardly not start after Arsenal but I think it backfired ... The tactic of Gray running defenders ragged for 50-60 minutes for Deeney to take over has mostly worked all season so once Troy came off I think yesterday's loss was inevitable. I have to agree, Deeney hasn't got 90 full minutes of Silva football in him.

Anyone fancy doing a graph of teams who have so far played the so called top 6?

We've played 4 - Man City, Pool, Chelsea and Arsenal = 44% of games so far.

It’s funny how we fans all see things differently, Deeney was non-existent in the first half, but that was down to how Chelsea defended, we had a lot of possession but he reality is he only attempt on goal was Cleverleys free kick, it wasn’t Troy’s Fault, they protected their box really well. In the 2nd half it opened up and if you ask me Deeney grew into the game, I’m sure he held the ball up and spread it wide to whoever passed to Peyrera for the goal did he not? I definitely don’t buy this rubbish about us struggling to hold on, we were creating chances and had grown into the game. The substitution absolutely killed it dead.

Very good! What I meant was we play a total over the season of 12 games against the top six although I won't insult your intelligence by saying you didn't understand that! I have just read the original post by meh and I see they were talking about 4 out of 9. I better go back to bed!
