Must make townsend and Deeney wonder what they need to do next season, when Sterling can be so marginal and gets in the England first 11

    Southgate will get the job.

In the FA already and won't ruffle feathers so to speak.

From one Yes man to another.

Nations that want to win things appoint winners and give them free reign.

    We appoint Gareth Southgate.

Bit harsh - we've got a bunch of talented winners with a winning mentality in their genes -

Remember we apparently won the World Cup as recently as 1966, didn't we?, didn't we?

    Grandad, grandad, wake up ....

In fairness though (not that I agree or can really see where he's coming from) J.B did say he'd be a significant improvement over Hodgson.

Be interested to hear his reasoning if he comes across this thread.

Sean Dyche would be a good shout to install some backbone to the team, Mr Smug Howe for entertaining football but they will go for Soutgate.

As long as Rednapps name doesn't suddenly appear on any list.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but apart from the Toulon win recently, hasn't Southgate had a rubbish record at international tournaments with England U21s?

Would prefer Hoddle to Southgate. I think we should get in a Scottish manager if we want to do well in Europe

God no. I'm baffled as to why people would want him. He's a one-dimensional dinosaur that is hopeless under pressure. The man can barely organise his team that he spends every day with, and includes players like Sanchez and Ozil. The defence would be non existent.

Honestly, England during this tournament reminded me a lot of Arsenal, without the obvious quality players in the final third. Possession football that mostly counts for nothing.

We need a strong leader, with a clear philosophy that is applicable at International level.

How Woy was ever appointed as the manager of England I'll never know. After getting slated by some of the Liverpool squad after he was sacked you would have thought the FA would have listened.

    Glad he is gone.

Highlights from the press conference with Roy:-

    Roy Hodgson - 'I don't know why I'm here.'

Martin Glenn (one of three in charge of choosing the next manager) - 'I'm no football expert.'

He said it twice as well, in case it was missed.

    You couldn't make it up.

I'm pretty sure England will appoint a foreign coach. There's no one that stands out from the possible English candidates.

England have to get it right. They can't keep ripping up a plan after every tournament. Hodgson's tenure has been diabolical when you look at what he did at tournaments. England were poor in the World Cup and dare I say even worse this time around.

That was probably the worst England performance I've ever witnessed last night. So he took England to the lowest ebb possible, so the only way is up now.

They will be back at their clubs and treated like Gods in 3 weeks time.

    Drop the lot of them.

    Unbelievable Jeff

Can't understand why we want answers for another inept England tournament performance

Why Sterling picked in squad over Townsend, why in team when patently out of form and lacking confidence
Why Wilshire when unfit and lacking match practice
    Why Kane taking corners
    Why Sturridge on the wing

    List really is endless

I noticed Hodgson didn't offer any sort of apology which might have been some sort of good PR move but I get the feeling he isn't one for all that.

The statement last night almost looked pre planned TBH.

Remember at Liverpool he got off on the wrong foot by phrasing Man U and Ferguson.

Blame The "sweet" FA for presiding over 50 years of abject failure. They are not fit for purpose. They have sat back & done absolutely nothing to address The Premiership taking over football in this country. Far too many foreign players & foreign managers in The Prem. They should have seen this coming years ago & put plans in place to bring through both young English players & managers. Name me 1 world class English manager ? (you'll have a job). Gareth Southgate to manage England. Sacked by Middlesborough but good enough to manage England!!. No English manager has ever won The Premiership. Last Englishman to win the old Div 1 was Howard Wilkinson in the 1991/92 season. Says it all really.

    Too many foreign players.

Even though, this **** refused to give actual players who deserved a chance like:-

    Michail Antonio
    Mark Noble
    Troy Deeney
    Marc Albrighton
    Danny Drinkwater

The problem isn't too many foreign players, it's too many overrated England players.

While I agree with you there is also another factor that is/was out of Roy's control, is the Chalobah factor. On the back of one very good season (but certainly not exceptional) on loan with us Chelsea then pay an 18 year-old £35k per week and in an instant has contributed to his failure to kick on. After pricing us out of the market for a second season on loan with the same faces he was carted of to two different clubs in 13/14 and each loan move since has been worse for him than the previous. The other factor is the Harry Forrester factor, very talented when he was a minor and taken away by a big club and ends up on the scrap heap. Forrester may be a bit of a poor example as he has done OK at League 1 and Scottish League level, but I wonder how many talents have had potential careers destroyed because too many youngsters are hoovered up by the large clubs.

The whole "too many foreign players ruining our chances" line is bull.

Look at Italy. Hardly blessed with the talent of old right now, but they look like a formidable team.

Organise the team correctly and select the right players (which is not necessarily the best players) and you'll go far in international football. The gap between nations is nowhere near what it once was. Every England manager for years has selected a squad and then tried to make the tactics work around it, e.g. Gerrard and Lampard in midfield together. It doesn't work.

The manager needs to select an approach and then choose a squad based on making that approach work. That's exactly what Conte has done with Italy.

Also we hardly pulled up any trees before we had foreign players

Failed to qualify for the 74,78 and 94 world cup and 72,76 and 84 european championships. Bit odd when we were dominant in european club competitions

    Agreed.

However, for Italy, you can also read Iceland / Wales / Northern Ireland / Republic of Ireland in terms of teamwork.

Generally don't listen to Talksport due to the pointless BS ar€scarp they usually blabber on about, but did on way home from work yesterday.

Gough shows how little he still knows by going for Benitez, Durham made a good suggestion of Bilic. Would be interesting if not difficult to get him away from WHU.

No argument there, I just used Italy because they're another large footballing nation who currently don't have that many world class players compared to earlier squads.

We didn't have a system. I don't mean that we had the wrong system, I mean we didn't have one. In all four games we were reliant on forcing an error to nick an opening, otherwise we were playing unflavoured, directionless football.

After everyone was saying on ITV how well we played against Russia, I pointed out that their keeper hadn't only made one save. Our attack was bereft of ideas, because there wasn't any strategy. Also players like Sturriidge and Sfeeling looked Championship quality at best when they played. Not sure if they are always that poor. Kane was appalling all tournament tool.

I think the comparison between us and them is being overplayed. Italy's back four all play together, for Juventus. Then throw De Rossi infront of them, and that's a concrete wall.

I agree that Conte has them organised as f***, but he has the fortune of building around five warlords.

Our back line is shambolic compared to Italy's.
