It depends on just how bad Mazzarri was. It could be that his influence and tactics were so bad that he made a reasonable squad look abysmal.

Hopefully yes, as he has publically stated he doesn't want to come back.

Yeah, I get that. I still think that our defence and midfield creative department are dog eggs though.

Really? I just remember him stating that he wouldn't mind staying at Feyenoord. I doubt he would cause problems in the changing rooms if he were to stay

I agree with this as things stand but I'm hoping there is more to come this window. I'd settle for 1 genuine top tier signing in the mould of Pereya last year.

As for Assombalonga I would be very very happy to sign him and think the vfm issue of us selling him in the past is irrelevant. His goals record is awesome and worth the risk and he will always have a sell on potential if he fails. I still hope for chalobah and with Assombalonga and Hughes we could end up with a young English type/HG spine to the team which might make outsiders love us a bit more which is something I desperately crave as an insecure hornet, or something.

Agree in that I don't think Assombalon is top tier yet and therefore a bit of a risk but one I would be ecstatic for us to take.

Also agree with earlier Scott hoban comaprisons.

Yes but you've just proved his point. He couldn't get in the team before but will now be great under Silva ? Anyone independent would look at the end of our last season and say we need to really improve our squad to stay in this league. Hughes and chalobah (if we get him) are nothing more than promise at a very good price. We really need a couple of proven quality players to avoid scrapping it out with Burnley, Swansea, palace, Brighton, and Huddersfield to stay up.

  8. In the same way we had to scrap to stay up the last 2 seasons?

    Y
yes in the same way that we avoided the drop by one place last season. Who do you see that are guaranteed to finish below us with our squad as it is ?

I don't think that's a fair comparison. Flores was notoriously scared of changing the first 11 and using any player with attacking flair. When Berghuis played he looked like the only person who would inject some quality into the game.

Mazzarri wanted to play 5-3-2 meaning Berghuis would've been wasted as a winger and after the previous season I don't blame him for leaving on loan without reassurances. We also saw with the Doucoure situation that Mazzarri wasn't necessarily the best judge of a players ability.

I think Berghuis is a good player and under any other circumstances we'd be delight to sign a player who played such a big part in Feyenord winning the league.

Deeney won't be completely redundant at 30. I would expect Deeney and Assombalonga to be fighting to the same place until Deeney is 32-33. Considering that he isn't a player that doesn't rely on raw pace.

Not to say that Britt won't dethrone him earlier, but I wouldn't say we should sell him as soon as Britt breaks into the team asa a starting striker. 30 years old won't be the end of the his career.

At the half way point in the 16/17 we were 10th. At the halfway point in the 15/16 season we were 9th.

We've have 2 managers in consecutive season that have failed to see out the season after promising starts. The team has been capable of a mid-table finish for the last 2 years. But a mixtures of bad eggs, unwillingness to adapt tactics, unwillingness to rotate and just pure ****ery has flushed those positions down the drain.

I don't think the team does need radical changes. They need a kick up the arse and an arm round their shoulder simultaneously.

What we lacked the most last year was competition, granted we had a lot of injuries. But nothing is scarier for senior player than a young, hungry and very talented youngster kicking at their heels and wanting their spot.

Chalobah, Hughes and Assombalonga are exactly that.

I wouldnt say we have a bad squad per sa but there have been issues the last two seasons such as a serious lack of depth in certain positions and managers that constantly played players out of position rather than adapt to the squad they had. Im tired of seeing our creative midfielders such as abdi or pereya relegated to the left wing or having a cb start at fullback. The lack of creativity isnt a surprise when we were starting games with 4 centerbacks behind 4 dm's and an isolated, overweight, immobile striker upfront.
Having said that we still need to add some quality to the side - a striker, winger and full back imo.
As for Britt, he might be one for the future but ideally we need someone who will have an impact now - its the weakest area of the squad along with the wingers

He's an in form striker that scores goals albeit in a different league, for the same money we can't buy **** with PL experience. Of course we can keep importing but in form strikers are rarely available and always carry a risk of poor adjustment too.

For immediate impact Britt may be the best choice we have.

It's weird that a top championship player like Will Hughes is a great signing, but people have a problem with a top championship striker like Assombalonga. Assombalonga isn't expensive, Will hughes was a feckin STEAL.

I think Will will struggle to start with, that's almost inevitable (because PL defenders stay on their feet) but he still has his best years ahead of him and for the price we cannot lose/

Think this is a really good point, our team is ageing and we need fresh legs and young passion. Certainly lacked pace last season so will be good to see the likes of Berghuis and Success on the wings, hopefully Assombalonga will be one of the first team strikers, but think we are further away from that deal then most people think..

Players I think we should go for include : Lamine Kone, Vincent Janssen, Giovanni Simeone, Andy Robertson and Kamil Grosicki COYH!!

Assombalonga and Robertson in and i would be satisfied. A couple more and i'd be happy. Certainly need another winger. I don't think Simeone will happen but he would be good to play across LW AMC and RW.

Assombalonga still in the US but didn't make an appearance in the training game against a visiting Costa Rican side.

Doesn't mean a great deal but perhaps being careful that he isn't subject to a bad tackle and wrecking any deal?

A Forest fans in the states met him and asked him if he's staying. He responded "I don't know. So there's definitely some talks going on and his head is turned. Or he would straight up said, "nah i'm staying, I wanna play for a team that was 2 goals from relegation to league one".

Until someone can convince me that he isn't a better option and investment than Okaka and Oulare, then I'm in the pro camp.

I like that we're going after Chalobah sland Assombalonga. With Hughes they'll give the team some youthful verve, which we sorely lacked last year. Get some more proven quality on the wing and a left back and I think we're just about set.

  26. Dusbero

I spoke to a Willem II fan yesterday, their fans like Oulare but the regular talking point in the stands is how funny it we paid £6million for him. That said, they'd like to have him back. But other than being good in the air, he lacks any other main ability when playing for Willem II.

They've had some serious talent come through their team and they reckon he's nowhere close to showing that kind of potential.

I think Oulare is a bust, until proven otherwise.

I suspect it's the one time Gino has bought based on a electropop-backed YouTube vid and an agent telling him that he's poised to sign for Man Utd for £15m but his heart is set on the hornets. Because he's feeling generous he will slash the price to £6m just for us. Live and learn.

I'm not convinced he would make an immediate impact, partly because of his age which is still young for a striker, and also as he's also had lots of injury problems lately.

I'd much rather we bring in a player of the calibre of Simeone or Defrel, who have a good chance of being a clear upgrade on what we have, rather than Britt who even at his peak I can't inagine as ever being any more "prolific" as Deeney has been at this level. None of his individual attributes are especially great.

Helps if you try and look for the good, instead of focusing on the bad.

If you don't think Assombalonga has any individual attributes that are especially great then I don't really know what to tell you. Why you think Defrel and Simeone are our saviours I've no idea. How many times have you watched them play? Not including youtube highlight reels...
