What's on your cheeseboard this year?

I'll start with something unflashy - a solid central defender of a cheese: Wensleydale.

I went to a Christmas market in Winchester recently, I picked up a few of those posh cheeses under a ton of wax, one had lime and chilli one was an oak smoked cheese.

A nice bit of baked camambert for sure.

    I've gone for;

    • Black bomber
    • Extra mature Gouda
    • Harlech - with horseradish mustard
    • Comte
    • Brie
    • Oxford Blue
Thinking about making my own crackers to go with it as well as a range of chutneys and pickles.

They were a revelation. Perfectly suited for decent cheese.

Oh and not sure if these count, but Baby Bells? Those weird edam things in small nets.

    My 2 favourite cheeses are:
    Gruyère
    Morbier
The latter tends to make its presence known in the fridge, like a ripe Camembert.

Baked Camembert has become a Christmas Eve tradition for us. Perfect with Ciabatta and red or black grapes. And wine of course.

Less cheese, more Heroes for me. Except for Fudge - the only disappointment in the tub.

    Both are possible.
Don't underestimate the fudge. The Kayembe of the Heroes team.

I do have a new love for Heroes after going to Cadbury World. Mind I am partial to a Celebration.

The first ones I was given some very 'posh' ones from Fortnum & Mason and the next lot, I bought, were from Tesco...

I've also picked up a bottle of chilli mead to accompany the fromage.

Now, bear with me on this.

Red Leicester with bombay spice mix and mango chutney (in the cheese). An aldi special.

I know it sounds awful, and I don't want to like it.
    But it's amazing.

I am intrigued by this, is it in the normal cheese section or the specialty bit?

It's one of the December specialty cheeses, 'bombay spiced Red Leicester'.

Baked Camembert (Xmas Eve evening), then for the Xmas/Boxing Day cheeseboard:
Epoisses, Jarlsberg, Brie, Comte, Goats Cheese - with crackers, grapes and onion chutneys. Also, celery for Mr HH but definitely not for my sister who thinks it is the “devil’s food”.

Your sister is correct. Many a salad/mayo mix has been ruined by the devils food. The rest sounds great.
"Jarlsberg, probably the best cheese...in the world"??

It's surprisingly pleasant, bit thin but a good solid honey sweetness followed by a fruity throat tingle from the chili. And if all else fails I've got a minipin of Vale Best to wash it down with.

Mine will be something almost identical to this. Maybe some Camembert but doesn’t need to be baked.

Oxford blue could be swapped with Stilton or Roquefort

I shall, be adding Cropwell Bishop Stilton to the other blue cheese we will have this year. Long Buckby Blue which is an unpasteurised cheese.

Bath Soft cheese is a must, as is Bunche de Chèvre and Lypiatt.

A good Wensleydale such as the unpasteurised Kit Calvert will complete the Christmas selection.

Just been to Sainsbury’s - picked up a Camembert, some Stilton, a bit of Mexicana, some cheddar and Red Leicester as a top up.

I don’t think there’s such a thing as too much cheese but maybe I won’t eat it before bed…!
