Took your advice and popped on one, here is the general gist...

Before the game - they should / will batter us. Coutinho hot topic but wont affect them beating us. Mentions for us were 'Silva good manager' and one clearly knowledgeable fan said "Doucoure is their best player, monster of a midfielder"

During game - was like reading our forum / shoutbox during games last season! They haven't got the right players in, manager not good enough, still can't defend set pieces, cr@p team making them look poor etc. Mentions for us, surprised Capoue and Prodl not starting. We have a large physical team. Okaka dominating their defence. The funny part was at 3-2 up comments turned to it being "well we will take the 3 points and move on". Then lots of posts saying either FFS or offside.

Lots of interesting stuff on this thread principally around whether our third goal was offside or not.

So, for me, it all hinges around whether there was one 'phase of play' or two. When Richarlson gets the ball enough 'bits of Britos' are ahead of him to constitite Britos being in an 'offside position'. So, had Richie baby passed the ball inside the Belgian tw.t to Britos to boot in the net then the goal should have been rightly disallowed for offside.

However, that's not what happened. Richie boots the ball marginally backwards, it pings around between the Belgian tw.t and A.N. Other Scouse defender and eventually comes down off the bar and Britos bundles it in. Off the bar. Ball goes backwards. Britos isn't interfering with Minge. He's behind him. GOALLLL!!!

I understand the 'offside rule' as well as the next man. What I don't understand exactly is when Phase 1 moves to Phase 2. So, can anyone enlighten me? When did the phases change? Scouser touches the ball? Ball comes backwards off the bar? What?

Bits being any part of his body that he can legitimately score with and the point of reference is the ball not Richarlison but otherwise correct. IMO the change of phase happened when the ball changed momentum from forwards to backwards without Watford's intervention at the only time Britos was actually onside i.e. when it hit the bar but seeing as it was a L'pool player that played it forward it may have been earlier. As always you can only be offside from a touch/pass from your own player except from a deflection with the ball going forwards.

Ta. But I think the point is here that neither of us are quite sure what constitutes a 'phase of play' and when one might move to another. Neither it would seem is anyone else.

Are there guidelines for refs regarding this or is it for them to use their discression and kind of 'make it up as they go along'? It would be useful to know when discussing onside/offside issues.

I'm not going to search but one of the latest rules mentioned the ball rebounding off the woodwork as a new phase

Someone posted on Twitter the official rule which says a player cannot be offside unless it's played forward. Can't be bothered to upload it on here so do your own ******* work.

That clears it up, end of.

You're right you know. I've just checked and FA rule 25.6, at paragraph (ii), as amended by the IFAB in their 2013 clarification on the issue does indeed say "Do your own ******* work".

That's correct, you cannot be offside if the ball isn't played forwards. It was played backwards. Onside.

I just watched Rambo 2. They weren't clear on the current rule either.

Credits music is very uplifting though, therefore onside.

I do hope that you were in the process of naming a new footballing ideology ("positionism") to counteract zonal marking.

So Merse, for the replay we're about to watch, are Arsenal meant to be using Zonalism or Positionism to defend this set piece?

Yes Gary, it looks like Klopp's midfield is being pushed back into superposition principles.

Not sure what happened there but I think my keyboard's batteries need charging ... unless I posted it from my laptop which can get a bit laggy when I'm running multiple apps (or hd video)

What I want to know is who is gonna play the new 'danger mouse' role as outlined by Wrightie on MotD? Obviously it can't be Chalobah as he'll be playing the 'Chalobah role'.

It's pretty obvious that if we only ever play the ball backwards we can never be offside. Sorted.

I wouldn't be so sure .... I wonder what would happen if the ball played backwards cannoned off the referee to an obviously offside player and he scored? By rights it should stand but I reckon most refs would pull it back if the lino flagged.

    Not offside.
If the ref stops the ball going out then he doesn't give a throw.

I know that but throw Man Utd or Chelsea into the equation and suddenly refs always seem to bottle.

Great game for us the first half , doucoure was best player on the pitch yet again .
Still need a defender who has a decent long pass on him with some sort of pace and control.

I think gray would be great with deeny as striker and gray filling a role just behind him , and getting in between the back four.

If we can keep Parerya injury free from now (touch wood) and slowly introduce Richarlyson we should at least have a finish between 11 th to 16 th place .

The side has a lot of potential now .

After our first game I forecast 5 points after 3 games, just got the last two games results round the wrong way, anyway it's still steady progress!
