    The extraction, refinement and eventual disposal of heavy metals such as lithium is a particularly nasty business which is often overlooked.

    Lithium is the lightest metal, it floats on water as it fizzles away as it reacts with the water, which produces hydrogen as it happens.

    I really meant toxic heavy but take your point as heavy properly refers to metals like mercury & cobalt Nickel etc. not lithium.

    Lithum production has had water and soil pollution issues attributed to it.

    Batteries, especially car batteries, were one of the first products to have a high recycling rate. This was required of the industry because of the nasty chemicals and metals they contain.

    Now car battery recycling there's a green industry. One that uses minimal water and energy - it also generates so little waste...
