I'd take him. I would imagine if it is true, that any contract offer would be heavily weighted in the clubs favour, so there is little financial risk.

CB would be very interesting. If he's had his trial and impressed then I don't see what people have to worry about. Could be a very shrewd piece of business

Up until last season he had played 20 odd games a season in the three years he was at Sunderland. why they didn't cut their losses and run, instead of accumulating what was going to be a bigger debt i don't know

Love the way that there are fans who seem keen for us to sign him despite him going on strike at another club, getting ludicrously unfit and being **** at football.

    Incredible loyalty.

Because they couldn't cut their losses as he had a contract ! They could only save that money by selling him but that would need someone willing to match his salary. Or get him to agree to cancel which would be financially stupid for him without a lucrative New contract lined up.

Whatever the club and Pozzos do i will back them. They know more than anyone on a fans forum about footballers potential and ability.

If your comment is based on this forum, then I think you are reading something into it that isn't there

I don't see anyone saying they want to sign him

My view (and I think the view) is if the club want to put him on trial then I trust and support the clubs decision

Must be worth a look at as he has been highly thought of in the past and is still relatively young. Therefore if he steps up to the mark and shows he still has what it takes we can offer him a deal, but if he doesn't come up to scratch we don't, simples.

This. How many excellent players have we found from the rubbish bin? How many players have we made good again, good players gone bad? How many free transfers that have have proven their salt, won the odd Player of the Season award
    along the way?
The Pozzo model may have changed insofar as it's harder to recruit £40m players like Richarlison and Doucouré (which we did) but also look at proven players on the scrap heap.

It’s very easy to look at it from the romantic side of the game. In an ideal world he tears up his contract and gets picked up on a free by a champ / league one side on a mere fraction of his current contract and does it because he just wants to play football. Then works at building up his career again.

Problem is there is no guarantees in football. That maybe his only big pay day and it’s setting him and his family up for the future.

It’s the game that’s wrong, not the individual. If he is having a trial and proves his worth then great, welcome aboard and hopefully he can find his early career form and promise.

Ps, has this trial been confirmed anywhere else?

From a Sunderland mate. Rodwell sat there taking 70k pw refused to listen to other clubs as nobody would match his salary, but the worst thing he never played with any effort. When the guy left he wished him dead on social media with a lot of backing from other SAFC

Maybe he had a mortgage to pay. The problems at Sunderland are legion and go deep. It's easy to make individual players like Rodwell and Ndong scapegoats for several disastrous seasons. I do feel for the majority of their fans but wishing someone dead is clearly OTT. Sounds like Rodwell has been brave in having his contract torn up and will have to accept whatever he can earn afresh. I trust in Gino and Javier to make the right call on this one.

I’m sure there’s always players on trial that the pozzos look at to see if they can come good again and make a profit on. If they take a gamble on him it will be very low risk as he will be a free transfer and his wages would be low, possibly loaned out to a club where the fee would represent an instant return in investment

Your mate sounds like an idiot.

Imagine you had a contract at your work and the company said to you "we don't think you're good enough to carry on doing the job, so we're going to take your job away. We'd like you to go and do the same job somewhere else for 1/2 or 1/3 the money or you'll have to stay here on full pay for a few years but not really be involved in the company".

What would you do? And what about if your career was likely to only be 15 years long rather than a normal one?

All the evidence from his track record would suggest steer well clear. But you have to assume that Pozzo and Duxbury know what they're doing, so if they see something we don't then I'll go along with it.

However, I expect in a few days/week there will be a small report somewhere stating he's no longer training/on trial with us.

EDIT: just seen the above post - seems like my prediction track record isn't just bad at WC games:eek:

The benefit about signing him is that everyone has such low expectations of him, the only way is up. He can’t get any lower in most people’s view, so he will win the fans over. If he does turn out to be the useless merc people think he is, well then the “I told you so” victory is theirs to take.

This is either going to be shrewd piece of business and he finds his early career form and becomes the player he is capable of being. Or he turns out to be rubbish and we make a profit off him by selling him to a championship club for a couple mil next summer.

I’m hoping he wants to get his career back on track, prove his doubters wrong, prove the media wrong and becomes one of the best pieces of business we’ve ever done.

As much as this might be a shockingly bad investment, I’m going to hold onto the little glimmer of hope that he might just come good. Sort of like a Darth Vader, except he doesn’t die at end but takes us to European glory.

It’s a tradition that we ‘consider’ a shocker each window. He is this year’s Joey Barton.

Sounds like a long shot to me but that’s part of the Gino approach.

    Ultimately I trust Gino.
Everyone deserves a second chance and he clearly is a talented player that has lost his way.
Gino and Zola gave a second chance to another player who HAD committed a crime and that worked quite well.

Obviously. But fans can still comment if they see another Ndong incoming. Not sure what your point is. Shall we shut the forum as opinions are pointless?

And lets face it Joey Barton has come up OK for most of the teams he has played for, at least on the pitch if not so much off it, but even with his off the field problems he has probably still been a worth while player for most teams he has played for.

So hopefully Rodwell could come good too.

Obviously Sunderland have to wear the 70k contract but what I found odd about this one was that he didn't end up signing for someone else on 40k per week with Sunderland picking up 30k per week till end of contract. Everyone wins. I'm also baffled why Sunderland didn't deploy him last season as he would be a championship star. Same goes for Ndong.

Hard to know if Club or players are responsible for complete breakdown in their relationship. Probably a bit of both, but pragmatism on both sides would have resulted in better outcomes.

I would suggest the writing was very much on the wall for Barton at the point he was linked with us. Off-field had very much overtaken on the field, as indeed it has now for Rodwell. There is nothing to suggest that Rodwell still has what it takes to make it in the Premier League.

Ravel Morrison again for a 'full-house'?

Has Rodwell done anything bad off field though? There has been a complete breakdown in his relationship with Sunderland and my concern is he might be more responsible for that than they are and is happy just to take the wage and not bother grinding the championship season. I don't think he has any bad Barton behaviour form though? How he didn't end up on loan somewhere with Sunderland picking up some salary is a worry though.
