I believe I may be one of only a few who hasn't seen one episode. One day maybe.

That was simply incredible. Without doubt the greatest episode of TV I have ever seen.

I assume Arya is Azor Ahai, she is without doubt the coolest character in the show.

Surprised Greyworm, Brienne and Tormund all survived after the foreshadowing in the last episode but I guess it would have been too obvious for them to die.

I think this is part of what made it so good. Portrayed how hopeless the circumstances were for the living.

Surely instead of the most idiotic cavalry attack since Balaclava it would have been worthwhile using all the manpower to dig a deep wide ditch in front of the wall, then spread nets and barbed wire on the walls, then line everyone up on top of the walls with pots of boiling oil and such like mediaeval stylie? Jon Snow might be well meaning but after this, and the battle of the bastards, I think he's out of his depth commanding soldiers.

I think the plan was to make the NK think he was winning and draw him in. If they'd have conducted a proper defense of the walls with oil etc. they might have been too successful at fending off the assault.

I agree the cavalry charge was weird, but honestly, the Dothraki don't know how to fight any other way. Outside of a flank charge after the dead reached the Unsullied I'm not sure what else they could have done with them, and a flank charge would have prevented the dragons from performing those devastating strafing runs.

I know this is a ridiculous compliment, but that was perhaps the greatest episode of television I have ever seen.

    So, so gripping.

Making the supposed two main heroes appear to be hopeless in the battle while the lesser one's got all the money shots was excellent and a nice change from the usual big hero saves the day writing.

Loved that. Went on forever. At the end I wanted to stand up and punch the air, (but I didn't). Will have to watch that over again some day.

Glad I saw everyone moaning about the brightness before I watched it, meant I could crank the brightness up :D

It's actually not a brightness issue, but the way the signal is handled by streaming services/cable channels. The compression techniques and codecs used aren't showing the episode properly, which makes it really dark.

I downloaded a high-ish quality torrent version yesterday and re-watched it. It was a huge difference from the version I streamed from HBO NOW; you could pick out the colours, see details that were previously too dark to pick out, and some of the scenes were nothing short of stunning. The rip had issues of its own, but it confirmed that the problems most are having are down to poor quality streaming/compression tech.

Seeing the blu-ray version of this episode will be a must for me. It's going to look incredible.

My 720p version was still filmed in 'dark-o-vision'. Maybe I have to go up to something bigger and watch it at night. Cheap cgi's always "...at night...".

I saw a 1080p with a >5GB file size. So pretty stacked but nowhere near full blu-ray quality yet.

So episode 3 was that great ?
Having never watched a single episode, would there be any point in watching this series from scratch without anything beforehand or would it just be totally baffling/meaningless ?

Without opening up a can of worms about codecs, 4k blu ray, bit rates or packaging I think you'll find blu ray is 1080p.

Not going to happen. Too many episodes and life is too short plus not sure it will be my cup of tea anyway. No point in just watching from the start of this series ?

Watch one, the first episode, its pretty good TV and gives you a view of what the rest will be like. It takes less than an hour. If you don't like you don't like and know that for sure pretty much, if you do then you've got lots to look forward to and no one is insisting you binge watch them all at once.

I don't actually think it lived up to the hype.

They spent seasons building up the unsullied and the Dothraki and then dispensed with them both within minutes. The dragons flying about was confusing, I had no idea what was going on. The battle was ridiculous. Hoards of undead swarming at speed, yet all the main characters having to tirelessly hack at one zombie after another, rather than simply being overwhelmed. The obvious flawed strategies throughout the battle plan and then, at the end, this huge bogeyman was actually completely fragile. One little ***** from Arya and not only does he explode, but all his henchmen do too and all the undead. Seems like a lot of fuss over nothing.

Told Mrs TuT this last night and she laughed in my face. Apparently as I constantly take the p*** out of anything "Potter/LOR ish" (and keep asking if the goblins or the pixxies are winning), she gives me zilch chance of liking this. We'll see.

yep it was *****, the battle with the undead north of the wall was miles better.

I thought ayra was going to peel off brans face and stab the night king to death, though I suppose that would have meant bran dying. But wouldnt it have been a nice twist that she had to sacrifce her brother to save the world? Just like stannis sacrificed his daughter.

There isn't much in the way of elves and pixies. It has more of a medieval / war of the roses feel. There is a dwarf but in a human normal dwarf kind of way rather than a Tolkien way. And the dragons don't really come into it much til the end

I avoided Game of Thrones for years (I hate anything with wizards, dragons, hobbits etc) but my sons insisted that I watched it from the start before the new series started. I'm glad I did. I got through all 70 (ish) episodes in about a month (busy, busy busy!). It's excellent. To really enjoy you'll have to start from the beginning, I'm afraid, but to help sustain your interest, in the first few series there's plenty of shagging!

It has some good acting and is a good story.
I started watching with a clip of "the red wedding" on youtube that made me want to watch from the start. If others haven't I wont spoil that for you.
