Hopefully we'll see AFC Wimbledon style phoenix clubs get established to replace those clubs breaking away.

This raises very interesting questions about what happens in the Championship playoffs this year. Top 6 all go up?

Awful for football generally but can't help but feel (that, should the Super League go ahead and the Big 6 get kicked out of the Premier League as a result) it would make our experience in the PL a lot more fun. A good season would see us compete with Leicester, Wolves, Palace etc for the title - wouldn't that be something. A lot of us have enjoyed the Championship because it is fun to be in a competitive, unpredictable league where your team wins a lot and is competing for something exciting come the end of the season; the Premier League sans the Big 6 would represent something similar.

That said, I can't see the clubs actually being expelled - someone will step back from the brink at some point (most likely the leagues, and national federations will all fall in line). But, for me with my Watford hat on, it represents an exciting prospect.

No-one should back down from this. Not FIFA, not UEFA, not the FA etc.

A stand must be made. Take your oil money and feck off!

What must absolutely happen is every European nation ban all games from being shown on TV period. No budging whatsoever. They stepped away, their games will no longer be available to any European nation.

Countries need to make a stand with this. Those clubs will come crawling back once their games are no longer available on TV or via streams. Their fans can never see them play unless actually going to the games or watching illegally.

You can easily make a blackout happen for all their web services.

What is also a must, is no “B” Team is ever allowed to enter any competition. No u23’s, u18’s either. All establishments of every club in that league must be banished from all competitive football, from their youngest academy down.

They should also be banned from signing any players under the age of 18. No more Sancho situations ever.

Furthermore all teams in the European “Super League” must pay a minimum of £50mil just to be able to talk to a player outside of that league. This fee is non-negotiable. So if they want to sign someone like Sarr, they must first pay Watford £50mil for permission to speak to him. Once then spoken, if Sarr rejects, we keep the £50mil. If Sarr agrees, a transfer fee is then set in place by the selling club. If the super league club refuses, selling club can tell them to feck off and still keep the initial £50mil. If player and club agree with all financials then fine. Either way, this keeps them from getting richer and richer. In other words, tariffs are set and have to be paid every time for every player.

This is all about money. So the only way to hurt them is to make a stand and take it from them.

They want to sign star players outside of their league, it’s going to cost you a minimum of £100mil per player.

What they are doing is ridiculous, so you have to match their ridiculousness and take it one step further.

When they come crawling back, they start out in the National League North and South, and work their way back.

Just realized my error. European Nations and the UK. You get my point though. Had to correct it though as I know some smart ass will say Brexit etc.

Arsenal and Spurs will love being bottom each season won’t they .

Probably soon try to come running back when they find fans walk away but then it’s not for the match going support is it ?

All to get the eye of the armchair support across the world only interested in the best who will pay anything to watch.

I’m calling it now, they’ll get to have their cake and eat it.

This, Prem football, exemption from domestic cups and B teams to dip into and top up their squads.

Quite aside from the greedy nature of these ****s, the fact that Arsenal and AC Milan are founder members but are so **** they can't regularly qualify for the Champions League is just perfect to express how ridiculous this is.

It means they can sell the Tv rights through their own version of ifollow. I dont like that its costs 10 quid per game to watch us but you'll need a £500+ digital season ticket if you support one of these sides.

We all know it'll wrangle on for weeks and a compromise will occur. Probably these clubs will run their own champions league and stay in national leagues but not cups and the premier league goes to 18 clubs and only Norwich get promotion.

When the premier league club owners are ALL businessmen and business consortium's, what do we expect? Charity??! Football hasnt lost itself in one day, its been travelling here for years.

They haven't said they want to leave domestic leagues, so the message is"kick us out and talk to our lawyers in court". Which will be enough threat to get their own way.
    Arsenal.. Hahaha.

Thanks. Still makes little sense to me how it could be viable unless they leave their own leagues. But I guess that's what they're using as leverage.

Disclaimer: I fully expect this won't go ahead, and that the big boys will just get more money and power within the current structure, but if it does, will it actually benefit clubs like us? I mean, yes, we don't get humped by Man City, but without the big clubs, would there be much interest from investors/owners in us? In terms of fans, I could see some disillusioned big club fans come to us, but would the more casual fans be interested in a rump English league?

Assumed that most fans of the big clubs would be against this but having flicked through the Liverpool forum it's about 50-50. The sense of utter entitlement in the people that support it is disgusting.

If they go, the Premier League will become a slightly better version of the Championship as the money will dry up meaning fewer foreign players and clubs having to rely on bringing young talent through. You'd be hard pressed to predict who'd win the title and it would all be much more competitive. Sounds alright to be fair.

Everton also quite please as they can now break into the new top 4. Probably still finish 7th.

Fully agree with the sentiment that this will go ahead and PL/FA/Whoever will ultimately just bend to the big clubs, as there is so much money at stake domestically still. A bit like a valuable player doing something naughty and people saying the club should sack him, they never will.

That said it would be an amazing opportunity to reform the whole domestic system and for the better, unfortunately it’s just going to end up with the big clubs getting richer.

One silver lining, maybe we’ll be able to finally win a cup one day?

Also surely by all conceivable measures Leicester are now a bigger club than Arsenal?

  17. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

For the good of football, it sounds interesting (I mean, leagues will be more competitive, but how much interest will clubs like Everton, Leicester etc have in competing for a title without the big clubs?), although if the money runs out, that's a lot of clubs, including us, who will find themselves in trouble. Us as fans can criticise greed all we like, but Watford had their snouts in the Premier League trough for a good few years

Cant see how it would be watchable or fair if CL qualification is removed. Spurs languishing in 8th in the premier league have stumbled into the 1/4 finals of the super league. They play Aston Villa on Saturday and Abu Dhabi FC on Wednesday. There is no reason for Spurs to bother with the villa game. They play their B side, reserves and rest everyone. They dont need to push for 6th, theyve already qualified. Even if these clubs stay, the Premier league turns into the cocacola cup early rounds.

Trouble is everyone from the remaining 14 PL clubs, almost the whole Championship (maybe not Wycome) and some of the bigger clubs in League One would have to face a financial apocalypse if this goes through.

There is much wrong with the current system, but ultimately the premier league money does flow down the leagues to an extent. This is about ring fencing more of the cash with fewer clubs, permanently. There will be less money and worse players for the rest of us, it’s whether you see that as a good or a bad thing is the question.

  21. a19tgg

I don’t see how this flies without all the big clubs either? German clubs being max 49% commercially owned means naturally Bayern are against it, so surely this just completely ****s an entire league over?

The skeptic in me thinks PSG only declined since their owner also has significant business interests in BeIn Sports which has CL rights, a ESL would have a huge impact on those rights.

It is imperative that there is no compromise from the football authorities on this. I am with Neville. Tell them to publicly withdraw the letter within 24 hours or each receive a 12 point deduction. Should focus the minds of Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal at least.

Yes, I think you are spot on.

The "big 6" will be a closed shop as they will get the extra funding from the new "competition". They will be allowed to stay in the EPL and perhaps the later rounds of the FA Cup.

The football authorities haven't got the minerals to stand up to them imo. Too much money is at stake. I hope I'm wrong though.

  26. If I've understood this right, the super league replaces the champions league. The clubs would still be in their domestic leagues. Unfortunately I think they'll have their cake and eat it, and the consequence will be less money passed down the football pyramid.

I’m not sure it’s that clear cut, that’s what might happen in the end but this is a breakaway league and in theory all other competitions remain as they are.

  28. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

    Hogg-DEENEY!!! Squad Player

The leagues have come out against this breakaway saying they'll ban anyone who takes part, whether you believe that or not, there's the issue of all those extra games. Ultimately, this idea doesn't sound feasible in its current format at all, it just sounds like a power grab for now, but let's be real, the Super League is coming one way or another

    Absolutely. Give them an ultimatum.

I agree that no concessions should be made by the PL on this. If these clubs go through with this, they should be deducted points then thrown out of the league. As for the PL, it should take this opportunity to reform. Would probably be a better competition without the arrogance of the big 5 plus Arsenal anyway.

    Raises some interesting questions though.

    1. What will happen re promotion from the Championship?

    2. Are players under contract at the big 5 plus Arsenal obliged to play in the European Super League? Is there anything in their contract that will allow them to take a stand? I would love to see someone like Marcus Rashford dig his heels in and refuse to play.

I’m all for it. Our great clubs have been tied to undemocratic European institutions for too long. I’d like to see us as an independent footballing nation, with the possibility that poorer clubs may receive a guaranteed pittance in return for Leicester being shut out. Bring on Footxit.

There is no doubt it’s the big club that attract the cash, but they need games to play in and let’s hope this comes back to bite them. Their greedy owners can’t stand the thought of having to share so much money, but miss the point that without competition to play against they can’t generate that cash. Let’s hope whatever happens is a massive failure, especially with no relegation or promotion. It’s time for real fans to vote with their feet.

I would imagine that all of the players contracts have some reference to the premier league /Football league,
    expulsion could make all contracts
Null void and would require some form of renegotiation.
Most of the clubs mentioned already generate profits in excess of £100M,kick them out and get back to a more level playing field and maybe supporting your local team might be the norm.

The implications for the competitiveness of the Premier League if this goes ahead could be dire. Imagine these clubs are allowed to stay, alongside picking up the extra revenue from this new competition?
