I had a debate, I think, with @lowerrous (but I might be wrong) the other day about viewing figures for some premier league games vs some championship games. Essentially a crap premier league games gets about the same amount of viewers as a good championship game. The premier league as it stands is just a vehicle for the top teams, the 14 also-rans are just there to give the big 6 games to play in.

The greedy ****ers have now decided that they don’t want to have to share the money with anyone else, they want to keep every penny between themselves, why should Southampton or Leicester benefit from
Man Utd’s popularity? We should be sharing that money with Juventus, a far more worthy club.

    Scum of the earth.

No, we’ll just have to play Man City B.

Just catching up with this after a match for Hazelwood.
I'm watching Gary Neville on Sky.
    You can feel his anger.
    Spot on.
    100% right.
Despicable, utterly deplorable with clubs going to the wall in the National League.

Power play to further reorganise the champions league and make it a closed shop?

I’ll sleep well tonight knowing that we’ve won more Premier Leagues than Totteringham ever will.

Remember, it’s not about what we’d regard as a fan. It’s about making a football Disneyland for fans all over the world.

I would hope the English league won't allow B teams, equally I hope the Spanish league kick Barcelona B and Real Madrid B teams out.

I can see clubs like FC United gain more popularity and possibly new ones too.

The Premier League will probably receive a fair pay packet and they will agree to the proposals. The only stumbling block would be TV rights and I’d imagine a super league would be a more lucrative tv deal than what is current on offer with the Premier League.
I personally don’t mind the concept and if that’s what the so called big 6 want then fine. I just can’t see it working with the already congested fixture list. Even taking out the champions league games and Europe league games they will have to play 22 games if the league is 24 teams. No way would they have time to recover and play FA cup, league cup and PL games. Plus the no relegation clause means it is not compatible with the pyramid system is European football and as a fan it would be redundant without a risk factor.

I felt for Neville and agreed with what he was saying, however I found it kinda ironic and somewhat hypocritical that his rant was on Sky Sports - which is partly responsible for this mess we now find ourselves by pumping so much money into the game that it's turned the game into a business rather than a sport.

Yes, just watched Nevilles rant and I wholeheartedly agree with him, but also agree it’s somewhat ironic that the initial breakaway to form the PL (and skys obvious involvement/benefit) happened in similar circumstances.

That’s not true, so far the proposal is to replace the current Champions league format so that they can get even more money for it and not have to qualify so they will always have a larger income.
There is no mention of them leaving the Premier League.

Hmmm. But it’s described widely as a ‘breakaway’ league. In what sense would it be breaking away if they remained in all their existing competitions?

Actually turned down a place in the super league to make sure we get another swing at Watford at some point.

The other clubs need to keep their nerve here and hold the line suggested by everyone here, telling the "Super" clubs they're not welcome in domestic football if they go ahead. But unfortunately I expect they'll put short term financial benefit over longer term and be bought off somehow.

Same thing on a much smaller scale happened with EPPP - Football League teams bought off with a bigger slice of TV money, allowing Man City and others to hoover up players like Jadon Sancho for peanuts, thus increasing their competitive advantage.

It would utterly trash the Premier League as top four would no longer be a thing, the only interest at the top of the table would be who wins. It's one of the few pleasures of the Premier League knowing that at least two of these horrible teams don't get the Champions League football they think they're entitled to each year.

This could end up being a very interesting battle since it appears almost every body other than the leadership of the clubs involved in the breakaway is vehemently against this. The full throated criticism already coming from former pros like Gary Neville is only a good thing.

No German clubs are involved; no commercial body is allowed to own more than 49% of any German club, apparently, so the German fans can deliver a big middle finger on that prospect.

No French clubs are believed to have joined either, apparently turning it down (good on PSG and Monaco, if true).

FIFA have apparently said that any player taking part in the Super League won't be eligible for the World Cup. That's an enormous line in the sand drawn, if true; any player signing for one of the breakaway teams will be kissing their international career goodbye. Remains to be seen if they'll hold that line, but that's a pretty big opening salvo.

Would be nice to see some governments come down on this hard too. I'm sure there has to be a way to impose financial penalties on clubs not taking part in domestic leagues.

I suspect this might get quite nasty, but honestly, I think world football would be better off without all of the clubs who have signed up to this nonsense. They've become negative influences on all aspects of the sport outside of their own clubs.

Let them go, make an example of them through penalties and sanctions and let them all die the death of a thousand cuts. F*ck 'em.

Surely the international football question will be answered with some sweet sweet dolla bills.

The idea of this whole thing is that it will be more appealing to feckless plastic consumers than any international tournament. Tottenham vs Inter will generate far more interest than Cameroon vs Ecuador would at a World Cup.

Aside from the greed of the clubs involved, this does present an opportunity for a serious domestic league revamp.

Would be great to see a review conducted to restore competitive parity to the leagues, undo decades of competitive decline due to the greed of a few, remove nonsense anti-competitive structures like EPPP, introduce salary caps for clubs, introduce a US style draft for young players, etc.

While the US does a lot of things very wrong in sports, the salary cap and draft ideas are excellent in terms of helping maintain some competitive parity. Would be great to see some similar evolutions in UK football, and the gulf left by the biggest numpty clubs leaving would present a window of opportunity.

    PS: unlucky, Everton. #RIPBigSeven
