Finding time to tweet about his column in The Sun while we were still playing tonight. Been obvious for a long time he cares more about his media career than the club.
He's 62 goals behind Luther (124 v 186). Luther has scored exactly 50% more goals for Watford than Deeney. Troy is claiming cup goals don't count for the record of top watford goal scorer of all time. Troy is nowhere near Luther's record and isn't fit to lick the great man's feet.
I'm sure much of last night's win was down to a few things he said to the lads before the game. Using his experience. Making sure they manned up.
Yes I expect he's seriously considering binning his £100k a week contract with us to concentrate more on his weekly(?) newspaper column and Monday morning (?) radio slot.
Did you watch the game? He was clearly shouting the team on from outside the Hornet Hive studio. Tweets can be easily scheduled using third party software. It's not the dark ages anymore.
There might be a long term angle in retiring at the “top” and going into a 20 year media career rather than your career start dovetailing with being a bit part sub. He obviously would need some kind of payoff but his brand does have a value imo.
https://theathletic.com/2041890/2020/10/16/watford-troy-deeney-staying-transfer-window/ "His captaincy and goalscoring success at the club (133 goals in 399 appearances) during 11 seasons, in addition to contract renegotiations — especially around his potential departure to then Premier League champions Leicester City in 2016 — helped elevate him to the club’s highest earner. With two years remaining on his contract — understood to be worth £100,000 a week — which includes an option of a third, financial considerations after relegation were always part of the conversation but there are no plans to renegotiate."
I'm sure he will happily focus 100% on his media career with immediate effect. No reason to drop the salary though and I'd suggest his brand is even more valuable while he remains at the cutting edge with the insight of a real live prof footballer. Expect lots of "secrets of the training ground" revelations.
Match made in heaven. The Sun with their desire for controversy over intelligent thought as diplomacy. Troy’s overweight, unfit and unfocused, but has a pop at Fred, who had just put in a great, lung busting performance against PSG in the CL. When was the last time Deeney ran close to 11km in a game? Fred should be taking the **** out of Troy. Maybe the latter will turn it around and put in some committed performances for us this season, but he’s acting like he knows he’s finished.
I'd be interested to learn what Troy is saying but can't face reading a paper that puts all KEY WORDS in CAPITALS and tells people that the most interesting thing happening most days is which Z-LIST SLEB has turned out to be a LOVE RAT.
The comrade is in his 30s. He's not stupid. How many ex-footballers get to keep the money rolling in even after their career is over? His great mate who stuck with him in difficult times just got binned off out the back door without even goodbye or kiss me arse. You want him to give up on a blossoming career in the comfy chair with the clip on mic on account of loyalty to the club? Troy is plain speaking and does not mind speaking truth to power. Good luck to him and I hope in his later career he promotes and glorifies our club in the manner in which it ought to be so honoured.
Cannot see how he fits into this team. Pedro, Sarr and Perica all work tirelessly from the front, shutting down passing options - something Deeney can only do in spurts. From an attacking perspective, we're not attacking down the middle, it's the flanks. All of our goals and chances are coming from getting people wide and low crosses into the area, usually to the near post. Deeney rarely gets into the area and when he does, his first move is always towards the back post, with defenders in been him and the ball. Late sub at best I think.
He is quite useful at defending set plays - well in the past anyway! You certainly won’t want him or Murray up front with our current style of trying to hit trans on the break and going wide.
Anyone else getting sick of going on say news now and there being ten articles about Deeney saying this or that about other players? get your boots on, get on the pitch and score some goals, I have no idea why the club are allowing him to do all this media work
Why don't you tell him that via the miracle of Twitter? Personally I fall in to 99.9999 per cent of the population that couldn't give a sh1t what Troy says or thinks about anything
I hope he starts v Wycombe. I think their players will be a bit in awe of him, and that's partly because of this media profile he's cultivated. See also: chumpionship refs.
He’s not going to speak ‘truth to power’ at the Sun though. That’s not what it is for. This is all that matters for Troy is Troy. This comrade is well on the way to welcoming Boris onstage. Mariappa is a multi-millionaire thanks to the club. He’s been good for us and its been good for him. It’s not the 1950s and he won’t have deliver coal for the rest of his days. He was trying to negotiate a new contract. I don’t get the concern.
I still rate some aspects of Troy’s game, but he’d have been on the edge of the box when Perica scored bellowing at Sarr for putting the ball in the wrong place.
I heard he was negotiating a reduction of his wages whilst in the Championship. I like his straight talking but I feel it motivates our opposition at times. When fit, from what The boss has said, he will be behind Gray and Peresic at least so he has much work to do. Only when we have the personnel to change formation or multiple injuries can he force a starting position. Competition for places is good for everyone.
Lot’s of people have made points like this to criticize Troy and I don’t fully agree with the logic. Was the goal Perica scored great and what we want to see? Yes. Are you surprised Troy has not been making the same runs? No. Should Sarr be surprised Troy is not getting into the same position as Perica did? No So if Sarr knows Troy would not be on the edge of the 6 yard box, but only just on the edge of the box, why is he crossing it to the 6 yard box? Yes we want a player who could get onto such a cross, but the crosser has to take the blame when they cross it into an area they know the striker cannot make.
But then where should the crosser cross it, if our only option is not in the picture, or stood behind 3 defenders? Surely the best option would be to flash the ball across the 6 yard box in the hopes of an own goal?
It's just pointing out he can't offer that option and it's more likely we will score from 6yds than 18.
Keeping the ball and driving into the box would be a better option. Shoot, penalty, pass to the player that is now in a better position... Keeping the ball and turning back until more support is there ...... Trying to get a corner...... Just crossing it into an area hoping for an own goal would be low on my list of options.
You are correct we would "more likely we will score from 6yds than 18" but only if the player is there. If the player is 18yrds out, we will more likely score if the ball is passed to them, rather than put across the 6yrd box.
Slightly strange logic, the best type of ball is one that beats the defenders leaving an open goal for the forward as long as they time their run well, aka our goal on Saturday. Cutting the ball back to the edge of the box is far less effective, you’ve got to shoot from further away and through a crowded box. Troy is an athlete paid £100k per week, there isn’t any excuse for him not being able to make the same run Perica did on Saturday. It’s not Saars fault he can’t. That’s really the whole problem with Troy in general, the rest of the team shouldn’t have to adapt to suit the needs of a centre forward who is slow, immobile and unable to score from open play. The end result of doing that is pretty evident from last season.
