If our financial situation is so dire - then did we choose to bring in Glenn Murray when we already have so many strikers?

I can imagine there were significantly cheaper and significantly better back-up options available.

I agree, and I assume they thought a Deeney deal was closer than it appears it was. But that's a separate discussion.

Where did I state all those clubs 'want' him and there would be a bidding war? You suggested you were looking for evidence that he would be good enough for us. A number of top clubs scouting him and him moving to a Europa league qualifying La Liga side is good evidence he would be good enough for The Championship, whether you choose to ignore it or not.

I guess there's a reason that plenty of British clubs were after Toney and none seem to be after Suarez ? Perhaps a lack of confidence that Toney would have excelled in Spain and similarly Suarez in England ?

  6. barely1egal

    barely1egal Reservist

Did Toney actually have any top flight interest? It would appear not given he has ended up in the championship.

Suarez clearly doesn't want to play in the championship so why would other championship clubs be after him? Not sure why no PL clubs have been linked, but top flight clubs in Spain and Italy have

I genuinely don't trust the second tier in Spain ever.

    Top scorer:

19/20: Stuani - 29 goals - Flopped in England, 7 goals in 36 Championship games.
18/19: Alvaro Gimenez - 19 goals - 3 goals in 24 championship games and loaned out. Huge flop.
17/18: Jaime Mata - 33 goals - class but untested abroad.
    16/17: Joselu - 23 goals - 6 goals in 46 games in England - big flop.
15/16 : Florin Andone - 21 goals - 4 goals in 26 games in England, flopped and now out on loan.

Add Borja Baston, Samu Saiz, Sandaza and Javi Guerra and you can see why the question is being asked.

Luis Suarez looks fantastic, and may well be the exception rather than the rule. But you can understand why at least from a playing view we may choose to cash in if some more tried and tested options are going to be sticking around.

  8. Thats not what I said at all. I’m looking for evidence he will be good enough for the PL and his future value will be considerably higher than 15m euro.

From all of those clubs you listed as scouting him how many have made a bid? And whats the highest bid?

Convenient you ignore that Stuani scored 19 and 21 goals in his last two seasons in La Liga. Stuani was one of the best strikers in the Spanish top flight but the fact he wasn't good for an utterly rancid, negative Boro side means he is a "flop" and thus would not be good enough for the championship.

Andone also did perfectly well for relegation fodder in La Liga, which is why he got his PL move (and turned us down along the way).

I think Suarez looks a phenomenal talent. Just more that we maybe shouldn't have been counting on him to score 20+ goals in his first season in England!

They must have some doubts though - If 15m is a steal, with all respect to Granada, he wouldn't have ended up there.

Convenient because I am discussing their relative experiences in England, not Spain? Just because you score goals in one league/system doesn't mean you will score them in another. Stuani a perfect example.

Suarez scoring 19 goals in La Liga this season wouldn't prove anything about his ability to replicate that in the Championship.

  14. barely1egal

    barely1egal Reservist

Why - they have European football this season in the first / second best league in the world?

  15. barely1egal

All he serves as is an example of the fact that if you stick a good striker in a ****, negative system, they won't score goals.

But those big clubs know he's available for £13m, so why aren't they knocking our door down and matching/beating the bid?

  17. barely1egal

I suspect a variety of reasons:

In the case of Atletico - While £13m is a good deal, but Luis Suarez (the other one) on a free is better deal.

The Valencia owner is stripping the club of assets currently and seems to want to pull his investments ( I assume due to China's new policy?). He is in the process of selling players at 1/3 of their value and even releasing some.

Barca have overspent massively and now need to cut costs (which is why they released Suarez).

Passed his medical today and will sign a 5 year deal with Granada

Also, seems the fee is 15m Euros INCLUDING performance based add ons that may or may not be triggered over time.

What a shocking piece of business from us. We’ll be lucky if we even get £10m guaranteed

Borja Baston scored 22 in La Liga 2, followed by 18 goals in 36 games in La Liga, followed by 1 in 18 in the Prem, then 6 in 19 in the Championship. Brewster managed double in the same system in less games, and Ayew scored 18. What's his excuse? It's just not an easy transition from Spain to England, made worse by playing in a **** second tier. Suarez may be the second coming of R9, but we don't know that YET from 18 goals in La Liga 2.

Personally i'm gutted he's leaving. But from what I've heard - it was much Ivic influenced as the owners. We have to trust the process as odd and disappointing our business has been.

I know less about Lazio, but if I had to guess maybe they think 13-15m is too steep for a back up striker, and noone is going to be good enough to displace Immobile.

That would be very poor, if true. The tweet seems to suggest the 7-8m is only for 50% of the rights to Suarez. But I thought those types of deals had stopped? May be a mistranslation.

Why do you need evidence he's good enough for the PL? We aren't in the PL. If he's good enough to get plenty of goals in The Championship, that's worth what they are paying. More so.

In that context I believe it means we’d sell him for 7-8m, then get 50% of his next sale, unless they buy out the other 50% in the meantime

Its a horrific deal for us if that is the case. We get peanuts for him, then if he scores a tonne of goals, Granada will just pay another 7-8m for his full ownership and sell him on for 30m

Good value for a player who has only ever done it in a league comparable with the Vanarama National and with only 3 weeks left on his contract.

Especially when we already have his replacement sorted in Glenn Murray.

  28. Eh? So we don't need Sarr then, or TDB, or Wilmot, or JP... we just need 25 championship cloggers

To be able to get 30% of the amount Almeria got for the guy Suarez outscored really does show what a master negotiator Gino is. We truly are blessed.

This has nearly paid for the Pussetto transfer on its own!

There will be a queue of people telling you how good this deal is. Just give it 10 minutes and they'll be telling you the reason is because of Covid, he played in a league equivalent to West Herts Sunday and that he bites people.

We aren't linked with selling these players cheaply though are we?

TDB, Wilmot and Joao Pedro are hardly PL hardened either - little evidence they can do it there. Should we sell them too?
