I'm pretty sure that was just a pocket of methane from a decomposing fatburg. They have a lot in common.

He’s spotted everywhere. It’s a particularly virulent form of the clap he has.

Shamelessly stolen from my fellow bully Jumbo from the other day.

We're not in any way an attractive proposition for any half-decent/ ambitious manager. We're increasingly looking like a lost cause this season and our track record demonstrates to any potential new managers that we offer no mercy despite offering limited backing to managers in the market (relative to peers). Of course it has been only 48 hrs and of course none of us actually knows what has happened over the last 48 hrs but the suggestions coming out of the media are that we've been knocked back by a handful of preferred choices already which suggests that our track record is coming home to roost. So no, I don't think these are ordinary circumstances. And even if these are not in unique circumstances, I don't know of many clubs who have been in our position before and have appointed one of the "usual suspects" and survived. So perhaps putting the mouthy captain in charge might have been a good idea for them as well?

As for Allardyce, I heard that Talksport interview and he seemed to be saying "offer me a shed load of cash for 6 months and I'll have a crack but I really don't care either way". If he was a genius who came with a guarantee of success, by all means, sign him up. But lets not kid ourselves. His record suggests he'll play defensively and look to nick as many draws as he can. We've rolled that dice with QSF and that's not enough at this stage.

My point is that relative to the seemingly thin pickings (if indeed there are any pickings left), gambling on someone a bit different who might actually be able to generate a response doesn't seem such a ludicrous idea.

I'm not saying for one minute it would be a screaming success but I think we are beyond appointing one of the old guard and expecting them to get anything more than QSF did. (I also don't insist that you agree!)

I knew nothing of him either so read the first interview I found with him. He talked about how important it was to play good football from the back, and that it was quite difficult to implement at Betis because they kept losing for a while at first but once they got it they were great.

Good job we've got a whole pre-season to hone the new style of play before the competitive games start!

With just have the perfect defenders to play out from the back o_O
As you said we don't have time to adapt to a new style. We're adrift already.

Just googled Setien. I presumed he was some up and coming hunk but he's some decrepit grey haired ghoul!

Employing this old windbag would be catastrophic from a touchline-aesthetics perspective.

It's a massive no from me.

Both Palace and Sunderland appointed Allardyce over fears of relegation and he kept them up. Everton appointed him to pull them away from potential trouble and he did it. Palace got Pulis to help them escape and they did. West Ham appointed Moyes and he got them clear.

We aren’t miles adrift and I wouldn’t want Pulis or Moyes - but it’s not true to say they didn’t work. To be honest if Allardyce comes in short term, draws every game and keeps us up, most would take it.
Of course we are an attractive proposition - we are a PL club, with multi-million pound assets underperforming. The kudos of turning that round would be appealing to the right manager.

I know you don’t insist I agree with you. And I say all these things respectfully. But Deeney isn’t a very good captain anymore and he’s been doing it for years. Making him Head Coach would be the worst idea this club would maybe ever have come up with.

Latest from Leventhal on the Athletic Q&A.

    Someone asked about Setien.

His representative told me today that he hasn’t held talks or been approached. So make of that what you will

I did a bit of digging and without being overly forensic about it, you can fairly easily distinguish all of those appointments (Allardyce to Palace, Sunderland, Everton, Moyes to WH, Pulis to Palace etc) from our situation. They were all earlier in the season and we are more cut adrift than they were at the time of the appointment. I would say we had our own "Allardyce, Pulis, Moyes" situation when we appointed QSF and it failed.

Given the run of fixtures we have coming up, I think we are now looking much like a lost cause. Deeney probably wouldn't be able to save our season but sadly I honestly don't think anyone will be able to. So I just wonder if trying something a bit different might have marginally more chance of success. I'll leave it there though as I don't think I'm persuading anyone (possibly not even myself)! Peace and love! (COYH!)

I reckon one or two of our talented superstars phoning in performances at the moment could benefit from an uncontrolled temperament....

The badges might be an issue however... There might be some sort of exemption for short term appointments e.g. I would ask if Shearer had badges when he took over Newcastle 10 years or so ago but as they got relegated that wouldn't exactly help my already crumbling line of argument so I won't!

I have, I'm not denying he has been poor for Watford recently.

I have also seen him have some fantastic performances recently for NI alongside Jonny Evans at CB against opposition such as Germany X 1 and Netherlands X 2. This includes being good on the ball (as is Evans).

To further my point, when he was put in a defence line up alongside a Hearts player and a Sunderland bench warmer, they shipped 6 against Germany.

To me, he seems to be a player whose game is impacted on those he plays alongside. Not ideal when you play alongside our current CBs...

Just seen Mullins press conference & the video where he took the training session. Fear he is so out of his depth it shouldn't have been allowed by the club.

Turned off when he said players were a great bunch of lads & was grateful about how well they trained together.

Those over paid dorks need a disciplinarian not their mate from the U23's

I think he can get them in line simply with his team selection. Start Deeney, either Quina or Dele-Bashiru (with the other on the bench), Masina at left back, and Foulquier (or Mariappa at right back). Pick a U23 striker and Bennetts for the bench also. Should send a message to the sulkers that they need to run hard and mark for 90, or they'll watch "lesser" (or younger) blokes play.

None of the U23's have travelled apparently. Dawson still hasn't trained because of a cut forehead and Kabasele can't be arsed.

Expect more of the same. Giraldi's picking the team after all.

A friend of mine (who isn’t a Watford fan) just said he listened to Leventhal on that podcast and also read his Q&A this afternoon - and was left in no doubt that Giraldi has far far too much influence at the club. Was alluded to that he gets involved in formations and team selection and has had no reprisals for it.

Once again, if true, that guy is one of the root causes of our problems. I just cannot understand why we still employ him. These types of thing travel in football circles and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if potential candidates are baulking at the thought of working with him. Plus he’s very very likely to be involved in the search for a coach.
