Pretty sure Rafa was very pleased by the result. No urgency on the Newcastle bench. Chalobah some nice touches. The skills are there the fitness still is not. Depending on who we draw in the next round I would hope a stronger line up is put out. There is a very good chance of at least making the semi-final.

Just to echo what posters were saying before the ball was even kicked.

Diabolical team selection by the coach. It completely weakened us. He really hasn’t got a clue.

No accident, these results in the cup. From the very first pre-season game, Javi has kept the "second" XI well involved. The team spirit is the best I can remember and it's little wonder why.

    In Gra(v)y we trust!

Yes, for someone out for so long with such a bad injury I think he did rather well. Hopefully he continues to make progress.

On a more general note, we have a pretty strong squad when we can play another Premier League team with our second string in an away game and win 2-0. We're in no danger of winning the league, but we're in really good shape.

Disappointed we won and dominated the entire game with excellent performances from players who have no future like Chalobah, Gray and Success. Hughes was disappointingly excellent despite being out of position, according to the 'experts'.

That Quina is a bit too good for us and should be booed and consigned to the scrap heap immediately.

We move on, annoyingly, to the next round. I wanted to say 'told you so' if we lost because of the team selection.

This so-called reserve team has beaten Reading away, drew 2-2 with Spurs and has beaten Newcastle away. We deserve a lot of respect for achieving that.

Chris Sutton is currently scraping that egg off his face. He's gutted we won, along with 95% of the media/pundits.

I didn't think we'd win today, but I had faith in the side picked would put on a decent enough performance.

In the hat for the 5th round. As long as we avoid Man City, we can go all the way in this competition.

Thought Chalobah grew into the game. He was rubbish first half for the most part, but looked a lot better in the second half as the game got stretched and he had a bit more time to spread the ball around. Glad for him to get another 70 minutes under his belt. Can’t imagine we’ll see the best of him until next season, but it was good to see him out there having been absent the last couple of weeks.

Wilmot did alright as well. Nice to see him move to the back in the second half and look fairly accomplished. He’s going to be good, I think.

First half Newcastle were so deep and we didn't have enough about us to break them down, Success and Gray are not the strikers to play intricate 1-2s through a brick wall defence.

Second half Newcastle came out a bit, we had more space, and started to play a bit.

Very disjointed but we did okay, there was a moment towards the end of the game where Hughes, Peneranda, Qunnia and Success were playing delightful close one touch triangles. Future looks good.

PS Gray is still a donkey, although he took his goal well.

Watford reserves beat a near full strength Newcastle, how the world has changed

It’s the same every week. I would expect by now they’d realise they’ve got it wrong so many times in the past, and maybe, Javi does know a thing or two about his players and so give it until after the match before posting.

Just seen Merson is gutted we won also. He wanted it to be a draw, so a replay would mess us up, then to draw Man City away in the next round. God, they all really despise us so much it's actually funny.

Sutton should just keep his mouth shut....literally.

Fringe players getting better with game time? Surely not. I just naturally thought they were all **** based on the 90 mins against Woking and subsequent conclusions drawn. No sweat though, I’m sure they will be back to being **** again next week along with a change in wind direction.

Will be interesting to see what team he puts out in the next round. It wasn't a problem today due to NUFC being even worse, a 4/10 team beating a 2/10 team. Anyone thinking the team that played today could win the cup is fooling themselves. Hopefully the changes will become fewer as we progress. Getting knocked out in the later stages after playing the reserves will just hurt more than it would have today.

Well done Gravy and the team.
Is it too much to hope that a 20 stone docker falls on Snake and causes a timepiece fatality at the very least?
Following that can Palace recreate The Battle of Marathon and leave Spurs with a few more injuries?

I think line-up’s in this cup will always be dictated by the draw.

Newcastle have a weaker squad and were always going to rotate due to league placings. Gracia knew that and acted accordingly.

Draw a struggling PL team or a Doncaster for instance in the next round and the team will remain the same. Get one on the top clubs and he’ll go full strength. Anyone in between those two outcomes in the draw and he’ll rotate a bit but not fully.

Personally I think that’s just obvious and decent squad management.

Hard to tell on the stream, we went 3 at the back 2nd half, was it 352? It worked if it was.
