Oops I missed one bad run under GT when in the Prem... (just 6 points over 20 games - at is worst 11 games and just 2 points)

We actually didn't go down under Glenn Roeder's bad run - so it is about 24 years since we've had such a bad run and not been relegated

We've never endured such a bad run in the top flight and not been relegated, and every time we've endured such a bad run we have been relegated.

Thankfully we have time - and we've also only been relegated from the top flight when all managers dipped into this level of form - both Basset and Harrison managed it in one season.

If all this is true, why did Gino wait this long? While I buy the idea that Gino was giving Silva chance to get back on board, plenty of us have been calling for him to get rid for weeks now. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to give Gracia (who appears to have been lined up for a while) a full transfer window to play with?

I’m not quite as convinced as you are that his reputation won’t have been affected, either. That would certainly be the case if any legal action is taken against him (though I personally doubt that will happen).

My personal view (and I admit it's one I've formed with the benefit of hindsight!) is that it if we'd taken a more pragmatic approach to Everton's 'tapping up' once it was obvious that Silva had been so unsettled by it that he had ceased to function properly, we would not be among the clubs worrying about relegation now. It's often said that there's no point in keeping a player that's 'unsettled' so surely the same applies to the coach? Based on what I know - which is only what I've read - I can't help thinking if Pozzo had been slightly less 'Italian' about the situation and not turned it in to a matter of honour, the whole sorry mess might have been averted.

I agree. I think he was right to make a point in the first place - we’re a PL club too, you can’t walk all over us - but there comes a point when that position does more harm than good: and that point came well before last Saturday.

Your point is a valid one, considering how it all turned out. We’d better£15m better off as well.

However, the club did not have the he benefit of hindsight and had to act on the best interests of the club.

Even with hindsight I still think the club made the correct decision. Had we given in to Everton it would have sent out a message that Watford are weak and cannot hold on to their assets. It would have cast a big shadow over the club’s ambition and future players/coaches would have a negative opinion if the club's ambition. It would have been harder to sell the “project” to future players.

Also, had Silva been at Everton, do you think he’d have left the club alone? No, he would have come back to unsettle our players in this transfer window.

As it turned out, form was irreversibly impaired, which was predictable but not 100% certain.

The owner made the best choice given the hand he was dealt.

Yes, HB1, but that doesn’t address the point about timing. You, for one, have been suggesting that Silva has only x number of games before Gino pulls the trigger for a while now - and that is without knowing all of this stuff. I do think that this could have been done sooner (assuming that there is truth in the reports).

Yes, I get all that stuff about not wanting to be portrayed as a soft touch etc etc and at the time I applauded the tough stance and, in a way, I still do.

But, how Silva's departure back in October may or may not have affected the players is pure speculation but what we now know to be a fact is that retaining his services for as long as we did when he had clearly lost interest has been extremely damaging

Of all the recent managers, Silva was the one predicted to be on his way to a bigger club and major success. Watford was to be a step on the journey, showcasing his talents, and resulting in an inevitable move to a big club. At the start of the season it all looked so exciting. It's going to be really interesting to see what he does next and where he's heading now...

The board gave him every chance to turn it around. Having made the decision to retain him they couldn’t then just sack him without giving him that chance.

Again, the next coach could be offput had the board been quick fire and rash in their decision. When attracting the next coach you have to come across as being a reasonable employer, not a ruthless one that makes knee jerk decisions.

Clearly behind the scenes events were detuorating, so something had to be done. The time we gave Silva was about the right length so a new coach could easily buy into the events that’s gone on at the club.

You see there’s always other considerations that must be taken when making big decisions. These have to be factored in and not underestimated.

I think our fans would have been devastated if Silva had been allowed to go to Everton - and the players would have been sent a signal about our club's ambition.
We had a man who seemed like a good coach and took us to fifth place and we just let him go for £15m - the Pozzos would have taken so much stick.
Nobody could forecast that Silva would sulk for months like a baby and possibly engineer his departure by giving up on us - good managers have more pride - and those last few words say it all

Whether he is allowed to manage another club or not until the official end of his contract term depends on what deal he does to exit. Until that is finalised he will jeopardise any pay off he might otherwise get.

Some good thoughts here as ever.
I believe Gino and the board had given Silva plenty of time to recover from his sulk and return to a professional outlook.
Had he allowed Silva to leave Gino would no doubt have been playing catch up in recruiting a new coach.
Perhaps Gravy was lined up at Christmas and transfer targets identified at his behest?
The next week will tell us.
I cannot help think that the whole board,as most of us,thought that sooner or later Silva would buck his ideas up and prove himself as a coach AND a man. Neither occurred so he had to go.
Silva's whole stance since Moshiri spoke to Gino is flawed,if he continues this behaviour in his next appointment it will probably be his last in England.
Mourihno acts like this but he has the cv to support his tantrums.
Until you work/live with someone you do not really know them.
Credit to Silva for his pre match comments about GT but very, very little else for me.

Given what we now know, I think the trigger should ideally have been fired after Swansea(H). That would have given Silva ample time to get back on board if he was going to do so; but also Gracia a full transfer window if he did not.

Could be, though, that as IBB says, Gracia was only lined up during the Xmas period.

Money talks, that is true, but Watford do not operate that way. They never throw money at someone. They sell their vision of the club which they hope a coach or player buys into.

This “ambition” is priceless to Watford and they have to maintain that credibility.

Exactly. We look ambitious. We spend a lot of money, we have high expectations and we are willing to turn down big money for people we think can take us to the next stage. The implication of this to players is that we want to be at the top, and won't just cash in to sacrifice that for a quick million. Don't forget we have also turned down £20m + bids for Deeney and Ighalo at various points - we have prior in this.

While of course every club except for the global top ten are 'selling clubs', we want to be at that second wrung; we do not consider outselves to be below an Evertone or a West Ham in the pecking order of clubs, and our handling of this situation I think sends a clear message that we are legit. Not only that, but the fact we had a new guy in within a few hours show our owners are legit, and not basket-case, knee-jerk idiots like some.

Exactly, and what are the chances that if we’d let Silva go we’d have retained the form we had that got us to fourth with a new manager? You’d almost certainly have got the opposite to a new manager bounce when a failing manager has been replaced. We’d all have been living in a perpetual state of ‘what if’ for years to come, it would be like losing the championship title but 10x worse. It would’ve been a an absolute hiding to nothing for the owners because it would’ve been next to impossible for a new manager to come in and equal the form we had up to the Everton approach.

I've got insider information of exactly what happened after the Leicester game and exactly how Silva's sacking happened.

Gino came into the dressing room and stood with a sneer on his face, watching Silva for about five minutes before speaking and apparently Silva became very nervous and awkward under this scrutiny.

"You can make out your time-sheet and come to the office for your money tomorrow morning," said Gino at last. "We shan't require your valuable services no more after this afternoon."

Silva went white. "Why, what's wrong?" he said. "What have I done?"

"Oh, it's not what you've DONE," replied Gino. "It's what you've not done. That's what's wrong! You've not done enough at all!"

And without further parley he turned and went out....

Silva wanted to get sacked, he held the cards. MS played it perfectly.

He will probably turn up at Southampton or such like by the end of the week, which at least will mitigate our salary compensation.

I'd rather Watford paid him for the next 18 months so he can't take another job. The snivelling little s**t doesn't deserve another job so quickly.

I'm not sure he would even want the Southampton job - similar ownership to Watford in the way transfers are handled, so he'd be in the same boat. And would Southampton want another coach who clearly is looking for a bigger job (although credit to Pochattino (sp?) and Koeman, at least they spent a full season at So'ton and delivered relative success before buggering off).

It's such a shame that Silva didn't have enough faith in his own ability to actually build something good over a full season. Had that been the case he'd probably have left in the summer for Arsenal or similar with our blessing and an enhanced reputation.

Yes, well presumably that was what Gino thought too and why he thought it was worth persevering with him after the Everton approach. I think he does have faith in his ability - he doesn’t seem short on confidence in himself. I think he just threw his toys out of the pram, to quote Ian Wright on 606.
