Wow... F1 was definitely not purely about driver skill when Schumacher was about. Schumacher only started making a name for himself once he was put into a car with advanced technology. F1 hasn't been purely about driver skill since the mid-eighties, and even then it was all influenced by off-the-track politics. To be honest I don't know when F1 has ever been just about driver skill, possibly only in the 50s and 60s!

He made a name for himself in the Jordan and previous formula's. He was a quick driver full stop. However regarding the point about technology. It has always been thus with Tony Rudd and BRM, Cooper switching to rear engined vehicles with a smaller frontal area for example and Colin Chapman and his advances with Lotus. As I pointed out earlier in the seventies a fairly nondescript reserve driver managed to score consistent points after being placed into one of the leading teams of the time.

However the problem now is the huge differential in budgets teams have for their R&D. It's has been no coincidence that the teams with the biggest budgets are at the front and none of the newer teams can ever hope to catch up and more and more the driver component of winning has been reduced.

In the past lack of funds was the mother of invention for smaller teams which led to success and an ability to compete with the bigger works teams. But all the bigger teams do now is hire the best youngsters from an early age and throw massive sums of money at the problem.

Sounds awfully like the premier league

I'm afraid the dominance of Red Bull killed interest for me last season

Indeed and like the Premier League they veto any changes which may harm their interests which you can partly understand given the hundreds of millions they throw into their teams. But once again for me F1 is losing interest fast.

One of the best things possible would be to dispense with the current organizing body and Ecclestone for a start.

How long will the season remain competitive - till Red Bull get up to speed with the regulations?

From being a massive fan it is starting to lose me in the technology, somewhat. The drivers can even get selected depending on how much money they can bring to the team.

I am also puzzled how drivers complain that a circuit, or a particular corner is too dangerous or fast, when it is their foot on the accelerator!

Brilliant start to the season from Kobayashi.

Think his target next race should be to complete a lap or two

haha - wonder who kobayashi will take out on the 1st lap in Malaysia?

  9. Finally we have an actual race where 2 cars are going at each other hammer and tong. Loved it. I haven't got that worked up over watching a race in years!

Respect to Mercedes for letting their drivers go at each other like that as well, that can't be an easy call to make.

Twenty years ago today F1 lost arguably its greatest driver, at the San Marino GP, Imola. Ayrton Senna has been an idol of mine my entire life, thanks to my dad's obsession in the late 80's/early 90's. Even to this day you hear drivers (particularly Lewis Hamilton) refer to the great Brazilian as a yard-stick when talking about racing.

If you haven't seen it yet, or even if you have and just want to watch it again, the film 'Senna' is being shown tonight on ITV4 at 10.30pm.

Last night Corinthians paid their own tribute to Senna, wearing his iconic yellow helmet on the pitch. Unfortunately not for the actual game though, which was a little disappointing...

Loving this season. Don't really get the new technologies' detractors. Hope Lewis comes through and shows his class, he has had it very difficult over the last few years in an uncompetitive car.

So so good today. Unfortunate for Hamilton, especially given Rosberg had the same thing but managed to finish second. But what a race, and very pleased it was Ricciardo that won in the end.

I was really concerned as soon as that crash happened, how those drivers can just walk away from the car after is incredible.

Best race of the season so far! And we finally have a third different winner, thank God. Montreal always highlights how boring Monaco is. A nice test for the drivers, but no spectacle for the fans... Whereas Canada always provides both.

Echo all your comments above. Hamilton deserves to be ahead in the Championship, I still think he will do it.

Problem Lewis has is the two dnf he has had so far could simply cost him the championship.

Canada is always entertaining - probably be kicked off the calendar soon.

Very interesting stuff yesterday. Hamilton is clearly the better driver of the two, but he just does not seem to get the rub of the green sometimes. He has so much bad luck.

  22. I get the impression Mercedes would like a German WDC. In the 2nd stint Lewis had a superior speed, and Rosberg's engineer came onto the radio to pass on Lewis's settings. Doesn't seem all that fair to me.

Pretty sure I read/heard they were going to invest heavily in the circuit due to gaining a 10 year contract, I assume with F1. Certainly hope so, one of the better tracks imo

    Williams 1-2!

Well done to Massa and Bottas - still think Rosberg will win.

Nightmare for Hamilton and Vettel again.

The race engineers always work for their driver. I imagine Lewis' one does exactly the same in return.

If Lewis had more luck in qualifying he'd probably be well on the way to winning the Championship.

If Lewis had any luck, he'd be well on his way to being a triple world champion.

He's also incredibly unfortunate that formula one has decided that instead of letting racers race, they want them to slow down to save fuel and conserve tires. A decade or two ago and he would be dominating.

    Agreed.

He's very much a Mansell type driver. Mansell would have won more championships except he kept breaking the cars. They couldn't keep up with him. I see the same skills in Lewis a proper racer, but I think Lewis is also more sensitive to the fragility of the car, of course helped by the much improved electronics and telemetry these days. Hill also lost out on a world championship when Schumacher drove over his car after crashing.

I think sometimes British drivers are a little too nice. Maybe it's the enhanced pressure from the British press and british dominated interest in the sport that makes drivers more careful of their public profile.

Well Rosberg continues the German stereotype of winning at all costs.

Admitting to the team that he left his front wing in on purpose to prove a point!? What an a**hole. Attempting an overtake from that far back was a massive gamble on lap 2, but against a teammate is unforgivable.

Everything seems to have gone against Lewis this season, despite being faster in 90% of the races he finds himself nearly 30 points behind. His pit stops always seem to be significantly slower than Nico's when the two are close, which must infuriate him further.

I know everybody says that Lewis has to win the title, but after all of his setbacks and misfortunes, I think that this year would actually be more impressive than his first title win.

Lewis is a sulky goit. I'm not a fan. But Rosberg has been quoted as saying it was deliberate.

He's got an itchy arse because Lewis didn't follow team orders previously and let him overtake, but Lewis was faster than him at the time. I think the orders were wrong.

If it is proved Rosberg caused a collision on purpose then it's got to be a points deduction and/or ban. simple as that.

They wont ban Rosberg or give him points deduction , however if it was the other way round Lewis would have been banned for rest of season lost all his points and would have had to suck Rosbergs **** in public! Lewis is being forced out and will be replaced by Vettel to form a team Germany.
