What About This ******* Weather?

Very true. Most of my friends in Malta hate the summer heat. They don’t get much of a Spring either as there’s not much foliage, and therefore no autumn either as most trees there are evergreen. They all yearn to see snow as it’s never gone below 0c in Malta, the only country in Europe I believe to hold that accolade.

I loved my working summers there, although it was fairly common to pick up a bug or a cold because of the constant going from an air con room or bus out into the hot sun and then back again. I loved being able to plan things so far in advance (we could fix to have a bbq a month in the future with absolute certainty) but one funny disadvantage about the weather always being the same was it became very difficult to remember which day you’d actually done something. Here in England the weather helps us distinguish between recent days I think.

One thing I’ve noticed there is that whereas in the past heatwaves were always confined to the real height of summer, these days the southern Med often gets them now in June too, which previously was regarded as a pleasant month to visit to escape the real heat. Malta this year recorded its hottest ever June day.

One thing life has taught me, having many friends and students around the world, is that hardly anybody is ever happy with the climate in which they live. Most people seem to want what they don’t have. I dunno if others have found this to be true too?

Definitely the case with many though the UK weather is perfect for me. Not too hot, not too cold, nice and green (usually!). I appreciate that others need their fix of heat and sun, but not me. I don't really care about the sun and anything above 20-25 is too hot for me. I don't ever sunbath, in fact I've probably spent a total of <5 hours "on a beach" in the last 20 years !
Sth Europe is always best in April/May as you say. Went to Crete in Sept a few years ago and the whole island was just a crispy beige !
Won't ever go to Malta due to the islanders illegal slaughter of birds :(.

The boy made it out at 10 this morning, mum and baby well. He’s unbelievably cute considering he’s 12 days late and was dragged into the world with a pair of forceps.

View from the delivery suite wasn’t half bad either!

I think ours is a great climate to work in, but a crap one for jolidays and outdoor events. As thete are more work days than days off, I'm reasonably happy with our weather - for now anyway.

Just waiting for further BBC info and advice which presumably will be forthcoming? Until then I will just follow common sense procedures and spend as much time as possible naked in the midday sun while watering my lawn with a sprinkler. It goes without saying I will avoid using any suncream or drinking any water, and will make sure I close the windows and open the curtains. Anything I've forgotten ?

Water is more important than gold or oil. The levels of global drought, loss of groundwater is scary. Desertification all over the place. We had the prophets like John Wesley Powell as in the US who foretold the idiocy of building cities and intensive agriculture in the western United States. But as usual the greed of in this case railroad companies won out. Apparently rain would follow the plough.....
