I saw this advert recently for example:-

"Xxxxx groundworks are looking for a couple of young men who have a good days graft in them and are keen to learn. A good opportunity to learn the trade for the men with the right mindset."

This advert is currently illegal because it discriminates against 2 protected characteristics: age and sex.

    But...

They've just been stupid saying it outright. There are a thousand and one others where they've avoided discriminatory wording but what they're actually looking for is precisely young men, or elderly women, or a white older bloke.

Anyone who doesn't fit that bill of what they're looking for might as well forget it, but you waste time filling out enormous probing application forms. Uploading copies of your ID, writing covering letters and sometimes even spending a day going to a waste of time interview which is doomed before you've even got in the door. A complete waste of time.

So why not just let them say what they're looking for? Let 'em say they want a young woman in the advert. No blacks. No gays. No Polish. No fatties. Why not? Then you just know to look elsewhere.

It would never pass the green paper phase. Equal equalities act would snuff out any push to get this through the Government red tape. While I do think being more "specific" about what you want on an job advert could able companies for a faster hiring process for example, there would always be a very large majority of opposition saying "yes but I can do that just as well. Does the fact I have a vagina prevent me from laying bricks or carrying heavy steel beams? I have a lot of upper body strength and can prove myself." Only way this would ever get even looked at twice would be for very niche' and I mean niche' jobs.

Actually, having thought about it the only possible industry that could even tailor strict persona is the p**n industry, but even then, there are so many different gender equalities and representations nowadays that even that argument is moot. An existence of "I can anything better than you" or "I have A levels coming out of my ears so I must get the job" is another side to this. If you can do the job, or are able to be trained and excel to a fast employment than companies have to take that person on board. It's an interested debate for sure, the world has moved on in leaps and bounds since the 1950's of course. Some for the better, some for the worse.

I get that they're after young fit men (he said, channelling his inner Julian Clary) but what's in that ad that makes you think they'd be OK with a 'white older bloke' and, presumably, not OK with a black older bloke?

However, I'm ok with it. It counters the existing status quo that if your name is Bannergee or NGoma or Patel you are less likely to get an interview. Because that's fair, isn't it?

  6. Because maybe, just maybe, it will lead to a highly qualified person getting through the door when their name / ethnicity would be a bar, and the opportunity to impress in spite of the prejudice.

Spoken like a true liberal wet wipe. Well done.

The double standards and hypocrisy are astounding.

Thank God for Donald Trump ending DEI nonsense!

I said in my original post that the advert discriminates on 2 protected characteristics. Neither was race.

They might very well be perfectly happy with a non-white person. Who knows. But if they have prejudices or biases and are not interested in hiring a black or Asian person, even the thickest boss knows that you can't put that in the advert. We're talking smaller outfits now in the main - the family firm. The white van men with the ladders on the roof and the copy of The Sun on the dashboard.

Applying for a job and worse going for the interview, where you stand zero chance of getting it because you're the wrong sex, age, race, disability, marriage status etc, takes valuable time and money. Stopping them saying it in the advert isn't helping us - it's hurting us.

At least if you let them put whatever they want in the adverts, you could shame them and choose which companies to use and which not. Currently it's all hidden.

Of course ideally you'd do away with these tax dodging, cowboy 'entrepreneurs' entirely and resolve the problem at a stroke. Their discrimination and dodgy practices are yet another awful side effect of capitalism.

No argument to be had. What you're proposing is fascist and undemocratic.

Times are changing back to ‘common sense’ days in the west. Biden & Trudeau gone! The worm has turned.

But if a few hundred thousand people in the swing states of the USA voted differently, times in "the west" wouldn't be changing back?

The fact that an election in a heavily divided country on the other side of an ocean was won by 49.8% to 48.3% in the popular vote doesnt mean British people's opinions are any different than they were before the US election.

Imagine if it had been 52% to 48%.
You could then still be crying in 9 years time instead of 4.

That's what politics and democracy is all about really, winning and rubbing it in the other sides face, not using power to make peoples lives better.

Wow, You managed to find a survey to bolster your thinking. Who'd of thought. How very unusual.
Personally, I reckon you could find a survey/poll to prove anything.
These pollsters are always correct. Here's one from your example, YouGov, covering 5 General Elections. So we have three main parties in each election, so 15 goes at getting the Percentage of votes correct, they managed one correct, out of 15 goes.

I await your poll to prove they got 2 correct.

Tick Tock, quite appropriate, even a broken clock is correct twice a day.

  22. Go on then, find a poll to say people think it's going well.
Find a credible economic organisation who think we've done well.

Go on, it'll only take a couple of minutes.
