    Yes. I think we will.

Although I think Pedro is already significantly more effective than Troy, with plenty of potential for improvement.

Because he has a media presence that demands he says ‘I’m ready’. He’s not the only player who has done/does that.
If you think that should not be allowed, that’s a completely different issue.
I am not making these comments as someone who believes he will prove himself good enough.

My point was that there was no-one so obviously sufficiently better than him to render his self-belief proven as ridiculous. I also think there’s a good chance JP will surprise us next season, but in the context of this discussion, that means nothing.

    Gotcha.

But do you think signing a top striker will actually change his thoughts?

That is the crux of my comments.

    Valid point.

I just think we've already got a better striker and we can't be sure if Deeney knows that and is already in denial. Or if he's just saying what he did in full knowledge of it.

Can you name them? Up until the Bristol game Troy had been running the dressing room for years. If we go back to that next season its 100% certain we'll be relegated.

It's pointless having Sarr and not playing 433. It's like having Vardy, u have to play a system that suits him. Sarr has 1 position and he's really fookin good at it. In a 433 with Sarr, the #9 has to have good enough movement and be fast enough to be available for a pass in the box from Sarr (like Pedro and Gray). Troy isnt. If Troy is #9 next season (even off the bench) we might as well put a deckchair on the pitch for Sarr to sit on while he waits for Deeney to catch up with him. The biggest problem with the failed Deeneyball disaster this season was that our system was designed to compensate for Deeney's weaknesses instead of playing to Sarr, Hughes, Cleverley, Chalobah and Sema's strengths. JP is a baller, he can play anywhere, the others have a specific position that brings out the best in them.

I imagine the rest of the players are not asked for interviews and comments in the way that Deeney is. He is still our most high profile player in terms of media presence and is still the player most associated with the club by general football/sports fans so it is him who journos will look to for sound bites and interviews.

Yes I doubt many not interested in the Championship could name more than 2/3 of our players with confidence or tell you much about them.

    Foster
    Sarr
    Deeney

Not staying it’s right but that is the reality.

Zero points after 4 games but a GD of only -8 rather than -16. Those 8 goals may be valuable later in the season.

Those first 4 games are so important in establishing the confidence and morale that I’d want the easiest games imaginable for the first 5 games or so to allow a win or two and maybe keep us away from the bottom 3 for a while. A great start builds confidence and brings more wins. A poor start is difficult to recover from. Just ask Sheff Utd after their last 2 seasons.

I think playing a "top team" early is not a bad thing. Often they are more vulnerable at the start of the season, before they get into their stride.

We started 2019/20 with 4 "winnable" games and that didn't end well.

Hopefully we will be full of confidence and energy and that will get us off to a good start whoever we play. It would be nice (and good for confidence) if there is a big scalp amongst the early games though!

Norwich at home for the first game please.

Good to get acclimatised to playing the big boys again early doors.

It's easy. Just look at the transfer out list over the season. Almost to a man every one a player who had no interest or desire to fight for this club.

Deulofeu, Capoue, Pussetto, Dawson, Doucoure, Quina. All players in and around the first team in the second half of the relegation season. All toxic to a bid for survival.

Disagree pretty strongly with Deulofeu - he certainly didn't start the season particularly well, but I felt like he was single handedly trying to keep us up in that second half of the season.

Pussetto had zero involvement for us - he was a ******* awful signing but doesn't really strike me as a toxic influence at all. Don't blame him for wanting to get out when we went down - the club brought him in without a plan and presumably against the managers wishes (presumably just so they could move some £ between clubs?).

Toxic doesn't just have to mean being a bully or domineering.

The problem with Deulofeu is although he was a heart of his sleeve type, he also knew 110% he'd land on his feet elsewhere. And his team mates would know that too. And he cut and ran at Xmas by agreeing to his loan being made permanent.

Pussetto was in the squad most weeks and I'm sure his apathy and disengagement affected others. Plus he showed zero interest in rolling up his sleeves at the start of the season. Complete waster.

Agree with regarding the above players, but let’s not also rewrite history and pretend that Deeney didn’t very vocally want out at the end of the season too. The difference between him and the rest of those players is talent though, and hence nobody actually wanted him.

Fraid not. I have seen extended highlights, including Rankin's save, in recent years but there's nothing on YouTube now i dont think. I also checked the clubs facebook 'throwback Thursday' feature and their footage of the game is actually lifted from my YT channel (i recognise the edit) Cheeky buggers never asked permission :p

Interesting. What does this mean? The PL don’t really want to risk getting less and the current broadcasters don’t really want to risk losing the rights?

There are so many old watford games that I'm sure were shown as highlights on TV but don't seem to be accessible on the net which is sad. 1977-78 Games against Newport, Southend, and plenty the following seasons. You assume pretty much everything is available on the net these days but not the case when it comes to old WFC highlights. I would love to be able to see extended highlights of the Man U game too, so much is starting to fade from my memory bank including that save and the MU goal.....

Yup essentially. There are lots of things in play.

If you listen to podcasts, the Ornstein and Chapman Podcast had a really interesting hour talking about it last week:

    https://open.spotify.com/episode/1zcLb71G6Nj9pa3HGWYhIr

Even included a bit of chat about why it's too soon for clubs to move to the Hive Live subscription model yet.

I think we have to accept we will rightly be one of the favourites for relegation as things stand today and the recruitment team are going to need to be very smart this summer (as they were in 2015) to improve the squad significantly without breaking the bank.

I’ll give that a listen for sure. It does seem like we’re at a bit of a cross roads or at least close to one. There is clearly a lot more money to be made by cutting out the broadcasters and moving to a global subscription model, but it seems they’re not quite ready to make that leap yet. Covid has obviously thrown a spanner in the works, but at the same time brought financial issues to the forefront.

I have got some brief highlights of the Southend game on my YT Channel including Jenkins goal and the trophy etc..

But you do wonder how much is still out there that's not been seen for many a year. It's a shame someone cant go round the TV companies and search their archives for all the wfc footage that's hiding away.

Yes it s a shame. I've seen those brief highlights before. Great videos most of which I've got. From the early 90s i started recording the goals and highlights every time WFC were featured so I've got quite a back catalogue but I'd love to see the missing full 5-1o mins tv highlights. A few are around eg the 3-3 brentford 1979(?) game, the 3-2 at Gilling ham etc but some are just missing. I'd not seen the FA Youth cup final highlights since I was at the game itself !

There’s part of me that worries about will there be three worst sides than us next season (could we be like Fulham, tough to beat but don’t score enough goals etc?), but equally my many years of following sport has taught me that things often happen we weren’t expecting.

If the bottom three next season was already cut and dry, not much point bothering to play the league eh.

My guess is there will be clubs who surprise us by having a mare of a campaign, like us and Muff did last time out. Going almost overnight from perennial safe survivors to mess ups.

Sheff United fell many places this season, so by that example it’s possible a Leeds or Villa or Wolves could suffer the same fate, unlikely though that might sound right now. Burnley, Palace, Brighton, Newcastle etc all give the impression of always having enough to pull clear whenever they go on a bad run, but then again so did we for our first four seasons back in the PL.

She's almost certainly in the foundations of the SEJ stand. The day that happened was the day Harry turned toxic.
