That cup tie was the featured game on ‘Sportsnight’ that evening. I remember watching it without knowing the result. The highlight edit would have included the save so I would have thought it must still exist somewhere, if not on You Tube.

Thanks for the heads up. Just goes to show how tough its gonna be and how delusional, complacent and naive Scot's 'we are an established PL club' comments really were.

Agree - I look at the current Prem table and it looks like 3 weak teams going down by some margin and the others will be very hard for is to overhaul next season. I suppose you could add Burnley to your list but I think I have said that every year for a few years now and then they stay up comfortably

Yes, that's why I didnt include them. We can't base our survival hopes on Dyche hitting a wall. It's possible, but more likely the master of team building, sports psychology and leadership structures will once again find a way.

How much impact did the likes of Pereyra, Dawson, Deulofeu and Doucoure have in the dressing room? Meanwhile the most toxic figure at the club still remains, and it was only once he was out of the picture that we started to play to our potential

Sorry, you're asking what impact a bunch of players who wouldn't piss on the club if it was on fire and who all couldn't run for the exit quick enough (including some who had already been pushing against the exit for 18 months), would have had on the dressing room? You can add Capoue to that list too.

Yet when they left, we were still ****, but take one more player out of the team, and all of a sudden we look much better. Besides, it wasn't exactly great work from the board to get rid of them, two of them went to Udinese, Doucoure and Capoue were always going to attract suitors, and such was the uproar from Hammers fans initially, that the West Ham board decided that they only wanted Dawson on loan

I get what you're saying - but then I didn't claim it was great work. The point is the moves happened and that's why I give them 'some credit' for doing it. Even if the famed meeting was entirely at the initiative of the senior players, such things are only possible and will only work if the squad has receptive people in it. And that to me means not having a critical mass on players who don't want to be here.

And I can see this meeting already has all the hallmarks of the moment Joka subbed Anya in the first half at Brighton. It's going to be banged on and on about for years. Sigh.

There's really no evidence I've ever seen that Troy is a bad influence on the dressing room.

He's just not nearly as good a player these days.

Great chance for promoted sides to get a fast start against clubs with squads full of players at the Euros. To think our lot already rested up then back in training before some Euro players will have had any kind of proper break.

    City away
    Liverpool away
    United away
    Chelsea away

    First four games please

The Euros may have an impact on the top clubs, but it would be good to have Norwich at home at least amongst that lot, just to make sure we get some points on the board - don't want to be going 4 games in to the season without registering anything, or else the nerves could set in.

Manchester City are to reduce the capacity of the Etihad Stadium to make room for more advertising space around the pitch.

The Premier League leaders plan to remove the first 3 rows of the North, East and South stands to install double height digital advertising boards. This will reduce the capacity of the stadium by 1,100.

Season ticket holders in the affected areas have already been notified and will be allowed to move to any other area of the stadium without a price increase for next season.

The Etihad's total capacity will drop to around 54,000. City's average attendance before the pandemic was above this figure - a sad indication that the club is valuing advertising revenue over its own fans.

Hopefully one day they move out all the legacy fans and replace them with digital ad boards.

Is there any proof that Deeney is a bad influence in the dressing room? As a player I think he's done but he's been in and around the dressing room during the run since Coventry. Just seems that Deeney is no to blame for every little thing that doesn't go right

TBH probably didn't help that the club basically came out and backed Deeney against Ivic when all that kicked off although it's quite clearly in general the players weren't keen on Ivic and his personality.

In the last week he’s released at least two articles in the national press saying he expects to be starting next season. He’s clearly no longer good enough for that to happen, but he still believes it and is using the press to get that view out there. Deeney starting regularly next season will be to the detriment of Watford football club, so Deeney is either completely deluded or just plain selfish to the point he’d rather put his own interests ahead of that of Watford FC. If he’s pumping out of this propaganda in the national press, what sort of things do you think he’ll be saying to Munoz and the other players? Do you think he’ll put articles in the Sun and Evening standard, yet he’ll just be totally inert in and around the club if he’s not selected? Even if that’s the case do the articles themselves not effectively have a negative influence anyway?

If season ticket holders are effectively getting a free upgrade, then surely the people affected are actually the 'PL tourist' customers?

So he has belief in his own ability? He thinks he should start. There are plenty of people in the world who believe in their own abilities. It's up to Munoz to sort that.
You also are talking about the future but has there been any proof about him being a bad influence off the pitch. If anything he seems to be well thought of.
I don't want Deeney to play next season because I don't think he's good enough but I have absolutely no issue with him believing he is. The second half of the season the morale was high but Deeney was still there. There were players last season who were far more disruptive than Deeney was but that doesn't fit the narrative

    Who was more disruptive?

His belief in his ability is completely misguided, he’s no longer good enough and he must surely know that?

If you no longer believe he’s good enough, on what basis do you believe Troy thinks he is?

Or is he just a massive narcissist who refuses to bow out gracefully, because he places his own importance above that of our club?

He doesn’t have to give interviews about how he should be starting next season, but he does. Surely you have to question the motives behind why he feel he needs to? Surely if he’s good enough he’ll be selected? Why use newspapers to push it if he believes he’s good enough?

It’s also massively disrespectful to the rest of the squad. If he insists on giving these interviews (which he absolutely doesn’t need to do) he could do them with a bit more respect and dignity.

He could say he will be doing his best to get fit next season and will be available for selection if the manager wants to pick him, but appreciates what the rest of the team have achieved and that he doesn’t have a divine right to start. That would be what most professionals would say, you know like when a striker scores but says it’s the result that matters?

It’s hugely naive on your part to think these articles are suddenly appearing simply because he believes in his ability, and that he won’t be trying to exert his influence beyond just getting articles published in the national press. It’s all part of Troy being bigger than the club.

Deeney being absent and our form improving to me says more about his current ability than his supposed malign influence in the dressing room.

When we did well and he played well no one ever raised this.

I do think there's a positive from him being out, and that is others have stepped up to lead across the team. Nate, Clevs, Sierralta, WTE, Hughes & co. have led the team and set the tone.

They've had more room to do so without Deeney, filling the 'leadership' space he usually occupies, which has proven crucial in the run-in.

I still don't think he's a bad influence, even if his media exploits are sometimes questionable.

If a player doesn't want to start why are they playing football?

We are all critical of Ben 'having a laugh' Foster when he doesn't seem to be that fussed about conceding, losing, winning, whatever.

Troy will want to start until such time as he is sold, I would imagine

  32. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

You can want to start, but also acknowledge reality and have respect for the other players in the squad.

One idea would be just don’t give interviews running your mouth of, the other idea is if you do give interviews be more respectful and professional.

Nothing wrong with believing in your own ability
There are many players who I don't think are good enough that play and I suspect these players all feel they are good enough. Doyley being the obvious one who I thought was pretty poor
If he believes he is good enough why not big yourself up in the media. He's in the media now so knows how much of a part they can play.
I don't believe he's been disrespectful to the rest of the squad. He hasn't said anything against them at all. there are loads of players who think they are good enough but go about in a different way, some in the right way by knuckling down and working hard to get back in the team and others who leave to get game time. Troy has said he will do the first one which I don't have an issue with.
Troy works in the media and has been club captain for a while so he will be interviewed more than most and uses it to his advantage, if anything you're naive to think he or anybody else in the spotlight wouldn't do the same
As I've said, I don't believe he is good enough anymore but he thinks he is
I don't like everything he says in the media and you are right he could say things in better ways but that's who he is
As it stands he probably is the best of the current crop unfortunately

Any player who comes out and says ‘I’d love to start, but I think I’m no longer good enough.’ is effectively committing professional suicide, at least at the club he’s at and any other of the same level. It would be a bit different if someone who’s getting picked ahead of you is scoring for fun; no shame in saying ‘I’d love to start, but as Bert is banging in them in the way he is, I’ll have to wait for my chance.’ There is no-one currently in our squad who Troy should feel is way ahead of him as a striker, so he is showing no disrespect to anyone.
If he’s unwilling to ‘wait for his chance’ behind whichever definite upgrade we sign, then he will be due criticism. And that assumes we sign someone who will be an obvious upgrade. Anyone holding their breath on that?
