Here's the full judgment. Interesting that for all the stuff Cadwalladr wrote about walkin' talkin' pile o'shyte Arron Banks she was 'done' for a tweet and an off-the-cuff comment in a TED talk. I suppose these were chosen as they were by Cadwalladr 'alone' and not as an journalist employed by the Guardian Media Group (and all their resources). Nice to see a lot of her allegations about the 'business' practices of walkin' talkin' pile o'shyte Arron Banks made it into the final judgment.

Good news! Rees-Mogg is cutting the civil service and proposing what’s left of its manpower spends the next 4 to 8 years combing through over 2,000 pieces of EU law that were automatically retained on Brexit day to see which we can do without.

    https://www.theguardian.com/politic...s-mogg-plan-to-axe-eu-laws-sparks-cabinet-row

It’s not like there are any other public policy objectives or systemic issues that need resolving. Not at all.

Excellent piece by Nick Cohen in the Guardian.

"The UK is witnessing a modern version of the Dolchstoßlegende (stab-in-the-back myth) that the beaten German generals of 1918 used to shift blame for defeat in the First World War away from the military and on to socialists, pacifists and Jews in Berlin."

    https://www.theguardian.com/comment...lain-away-the-disaster?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Now it's the civil service and "remoaners" that are to blame for the failure of Brexit.

The scary thing is enough people were convinced by the "stab in the back" myth in Germany following WWI that it directly led to the persecution of the Jews, political opposition and many others.

Why can't those that championed Brexit, and those that voted for it, just own it?

There are people in England Scotland Wales NI , France Belgium Holland and other countries who cannot pay the bills. Children are going hungry in EU and non EU nations and all some people want to bang on about is having to fill in a form next time they go on a European jolly . Have a bit of self awareness huh ? .
Cos if we remained people would still be going hungry.

A-ha. The simplism of the isolated anecdote. It's not people 'banging on about having to fill in a form', it's the obstruction and difficulty added to a huge, huge number of transactions that used to be frictionless and therefore easier, more efficient and cheaper. In my line of work it's become impossible to sell to customers in Europe without completing paperwork and paying fees that raises costs for the customer (making the items undesirable) or that wipes out the profit margin entirely. So, we have had a 100% reduction in revenue from customers in the EU since 2020 because it's simply not worth selling anything and making no money on the transaction. British companies losing a huge proportion of inward income is bad for the country. In a super competitive world where every % counts it's disastrous. The idea that emerging economies – where people's household income is so much lower than ours – were going to ride to the rescue by purchasing all UK goods and services to compensate was always absolutely barmy. Maybe in several decades' time, but not while the disposable income of people of living in those emerging economies is so much lower.

Then there's the difficulty of getting UK citizens into EU countries to work. Permits and insurance policies that were previously not required now are, making it cheaper and easier to hire EU-based staff, or even Americans and Australians, because their protocols are established and understood. There's the difficulty of importing and exporting items both for use and for sale. Fine for me, I can work round it. Not so fine for young British workers who might want to see a bit of the world and who are now not desirable employees. The rules are loosely enforced and I know plenty of people who have simply carried on as before, which is fine until something goes wrong and you get rumbled.

Write all that off as the justifiable cost of enjoying a mythical sovereignty if you wish, but don't tell people who know and understand how things work that it's 'just a few forms for jollies' because it's not. It's an increased cost on every single thing, every single time. Those costs are paid for by you, me and everyone else in this country. We're paying for in thousands of small, almost invisible ways every single day.

To be fair, I am fine. I am an EU citizen too so I can zip across and back without a work permit. I can work and live there and here, just as British people could before. So I am sort of like Northern Ireland, enjoying the best of both worlds and experiencing fewer of the downsides. But those downsides are still there. There can be issues with taking expensive equipment over and back. It's a pain but it's not as bad as it is for some.

Anyway, next time you hear how the cost of living crisis is affecting everywhere, take a look at how much it costs to fill a car, buy a meal, book a hotel room in most of western Europe compared to here. Britain is, all of a sudden, incredibly expensive. A look last week at our year-to-year outgoings (UK v rest of Europe) from 2019, 2020 and 2021 was a real eye-opener.

  16. I wouldn't bother. I didn't read the original post as on ignore, so either Captain Nutjob or The Working Class Hero, but presumably the jist was something about cheaper macchiatos or au pairs or trying to get through customs for work being dismissed as "a little inconvenience on your posh foreign holidays".
There's a theme running through this - I'll **** the bed so long as everybody else has to sleep in the same shitted (shat?) bed because I want everybody brought down to my perceived level of misery and injustice. I used to dismiss the idea of "politics of envy" as being a Tory construct, but since the referendum I have changed my mind.

A perfect example from Dan Snow explaining how things are more than just a little bit more inconvenient for businesses who are trying to operate in the EU.

One of the other parishes I frequent, primarily dedicated to comedy, has Lee and Herring as quite active members. When Stew first did this routine (or more correctly the recording of it came to light) the MailOnline actually had a "PC Lefty Comic Mocks Hero" (or whatever) article 'up' for several hours before it was pulled...

I would like to think that at least one of the major parties would be willing to have an adult conversation about a way forward that wasn't framed in terms of "Brexiters" and ""Remainers".

I find it incredible that the Tory leadership race still regards being a remain voter as some kind of badge of dishonour despite the obvious unpopularity of Brexit now.

It's too late to "undo" Brexit, although rejoining may become viable in a generation of two. But I think working towards a Norway style EEA membership could be a vote winner within 5-10 years.
