I actually quite liked Vlad, but I think the lack of quality in the Championship almost caught him by surprise, we dropped a lot of points early in the season in God awful games, and in at least one game last season I could have sworn we won without even trying to get the 3 points lol

Because we need to have some kind of plan that doesn't just revolve around staying up in the immediate term, survival will be so tough, we can't count on it, so get a promising up and coming manager who will fancy sticking around in the Championship

I don’t have a problem with him, but I’m not too sure he’ll get on with Harry Hornet.

Sounds a good description of some of our away games under Ivic - I guess it's either Derby or Birmingham you're thinking of, the only away games we won under him!

I have a decent degree of reverence for Hodgson both for his seeming character and his career as a whole, and the way he managed to turn round and stabilise Palace. That being said, I think by the end Palace fans themselves were very grateful to him, but desperate to see him step down so they could move on, which they have now, of course, done, to what seems like great effect. And I think he equally chose to step down/have his contract run out - I'm really not sure he would have the fight or impetus to take over this basket case club in this position and immediately start fighting as his life depended on it. Maybe I'm wrong, and the only way we'll know is if he is a viable candidate and he does take it up, but I'd really be surprised. I'd frankly be surprised if he's a genuine contender, but then I have been surprised before; it's true.

In a way I think we're better off going firefighter till summer then long term option. Was it Huddersfield who hired a 'long term project manager' when they were getting stuffed every week in the PL and then results were so bad they had to get rid of him too? Obviously if someone like Martinez is interested we should go for him but I can't see them coming now..

Whilst I agree, unfortunately that’s far too idealistic. Whether we stay up or not, it’s still possible to do so. We’re in a mess as a club, but we are where we are right now. Gino will believe we can stay up so he’ll appoint accordingly. You can’t really blame him, because the damage has already been done so we may as well make a fist of staying up and worry about next season later.

Yep, Brum immediately sprung to mind! I don't think we had a shot of any description until about the 67th minute, and Brum weren't much livelier! Derby wasn't so bad in comparison, but it was still pretty grim!

True, but despite everything, I don't think we're as hopeless as Huddersfield were, even though I don't think we have a hope of staying up, I think a decent manager, if they don't keep us up, would be able to lay down the kind of roots next season that Siewert at Udders wasn't because they were simply so broken from the end of their Prem season

I thought Ranieri was nuts to take the job and I think Hodgson would be 10x as nuts if he did. Ranieri despite winning the league perhaps had a point to prove over what happened at Leicester and then Fulham. Hodgson is older and has no such need for redemption. He’s a nice old chap and I’d question his sanity getting involved with our mob.

Who they actually hired was the Dortmund II (reserves) manager, replicating what they had done with Wagner and crossing their fingers, so he had only ever coached in the third tier of German football up to that point.

It wasn't quite the same thing as a project manager - it was more like a project of a manager!

It was almost akin to hiring Xisco to save you in the Prem, and in fairness to him, unlike Xisco, Siewert hasn't worked as a senior coach since, either. All in all a rather more drastic affair.

Hodgson until the end of the season to stabilise us wouldn't be the worst idea in the world in my opinion, but I completely understand why a lot would oppose it when Martinez is available.

But this is how the cycle starts. Firefighter brought in, if that doesn’t go well, sack and repeat. Firefighter does ok, keep on for longer wasting preseason and sack after 8 games when other desired coaches now have jobs.

I’d prefer and would get behind them bringing in a Martinez and they keep the job relegation or not. Let them try to build something. Give them more responsibility and authority with the players and recruitment. Build a style, a character, get the youth teams playing the same style, actually make the coach responsible for development of players.

Won’t happen but I can dream.

Absolutely, I almost wish we were further away from safety, because it would be a perfect opportunity for another Big Nige type appointment (not him personally of course, but someone who could be brought in with half an eye on the Championship)

But that’s what we thought about Pearson, many wanted him to stay after relegation. Dumped off with two games to go for whatever reason. Nothing is done with an eye on next season.

If you could define the one thing that Gino could do now to make me even more despondent with him and Duxbury, it would be to ignore the handful of genuinely talented younger coaches out there who are actually available, in favour of appointing Roy Hodgson.

Surely the truth is somewhere in the middle though? If we can get Martinez then great, get him and stick with him, but if we can’t? The manager we end up with for the long term project is going to be just as panicked as the firefighter one, so probably end up failing anyway.

Then ideal scenario is surely firefighter now to try and keep us up and spend the next few months identifying targets for the the long term in either league, but probably the championship.

The problem is we know if we do end up somehow staying up they’ll just forget the lessons they should’ve learned.

His crime was actually giving us a sniff of survival in the first place, dare I say if we'd have been relegated with about 6-9 points to spare, he'd have been safe for the start of the next season (until the inevitable wobble that season!)

That is inevitable, which I think people need to grasp. Not saying I agree with it but that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Gino & Scott aren’t suddenly going to abandon their approach, if anything history has shown us they’ll just double down even more.

The players won’t play for a firefighter who is here for 6 months.

Come on people, we can’t spend all weekend bemoaning the practices of the owner and the players for downing tools - and then seriously be suggested doing it again as the best course of action!

Talksport saying Roy Hodgson is the favourite so must be some truth in it I guess.

In full agreement with this post. I wrote a similar comment to your second paragraph in another forum, although I was referring specifically to Diego Martinez. I am not sure whether he would agree to join Watford in mid-season, but he might be convinced to come if he knew that he would still be in charge next season (even if Watford were to be relegated) so that he has sufficient time to introduce and apply his own ideas. He should be given the opportunity to rebuild and develop the team (with more input to recruitment).

They're surely just saying that based on the betting - Talksport almost never have any privileged insight or journalists with insider connections whatsoever - I'm not sure they've ever broken anything that Moshiri hasn't texted his mate Jim White to read out on air.

Roy Hodgson has emerged as the hot favourite to be named the new #WatfordFC manager. Still work to be done on the deal but @talkSPORT sources indicate he could be unveiled as early as tomorrow. He believes they have enough firepower for him to keep them up.

I bet there wouldn't be many clubs in the champ who would appoint Roy these days.

Pozzos just don't do bad business.

For me it’s just looking at realistically what will happen, rather than what I want. For Gino to accept relegation as more than likely and appoint someone with more than the end of the season in mind would require him to completely and immediately change his character.

I listed to a Twitter spaces before and every fan seemed to be saying things along these lines. It’s genuinely baffling.
There’s only so many out there:
Corberan at Huddersfield but I think he’s too naive to helm a relegation battle
Lowe but he’s just gone to Preston
Wilder but he’s just gone to Boro (not that young though)
Martin but he’s very green and I think has the same issues as Corberan.

The only decent viable options in my view would be Neil Critchley (former Liverpool u-23 coach who got Blackpool promoted last season and now mid-table). We could do worse than Warburton but Critchley is the only one I would consider potentially choosing over Diego Martinez.

It’s utterly utterly baffling if they appoint Roy Hodgson and I will fail to believe they are serious about this club. Just clueless.
