I remember Poskett as one of the few pure goal poachers we have had over the years but, as the article implies, he probably wasn't quite good enough to make it at the very top level. His main highlight for us was scoring two of the seven in 'that' Cup game against Southampton.

Was there ever a better night at the Vic?

Poskett was such a good player for us - yes he had a hairstyle that was an offence to the eye - but you fancied him to score whenever the chance arose - Johnson / Graham and Wilkinson were similar in that era - before that Jennings had that same feel

Great finisher but contributed too little elsewhere on the pitch with a disappointing workrate which is why, despite his goals, his career at WFC was relatively short.

He scored a screamer at home against Coventry I believe..

Yes in the cup. 2-2 draw before we lost replay 5-0.

That was the plan though. As was Armstrong.

Remember him in warm ups just concentrating on practicing his finishing. Something dare I say it Gray should have been doing a long time ago.

TBF all forward \ attacking players practice finishing pre match . Which , I suppose, is no defence of Gray !.

No not good enough, and Jenkins got back to centre forward.

He was among that group of players who came in and then went out again. Like Henderson the full back and Ray Train was another. And of course some got converted from their original attaching role into defenders and did splendidly.

Steele, Henderson, Patching, Rostron, & Poskett. All signed close together. Rostron was the only one who worked out really, and even then after being converted to FB after not really establishing himself on the wing. Patching was in and out before his horrible injury.
Ray Train was the year before and scored on his debut with a 90th minute 30 yard equalizer in 1-1 draw home to Mansfield.

Remember the strange Watford career of John Stirk? Signed after promotion to the 3rd division, started all 46 games as first choice full back that season ending in promotion to division two, then sold to Chesterfield without playing in the higher league.

Yes indeed. Joined from Ipswich, ever-present as you say, then dropped and sold and temporarily replaced by the player he was bought to replace, Trevor How, .....who was then replaced by Mick Henderson, referred to 2 posts above....who was then of course replaced by Pat Rice.

And we think the recruitment is chaotic now

That Patching performance, including that goal, home to Liverpool just showed us what could've been. An all action attacking midfielder. Didn't he end up working for the Press Association and doing a bit of punditry for us on 3CR?

His goals helped keep us up in our first Season back in Div 2. He was also our main source of goals, the following season as we found our feet and became established at this level. He got injured early doors in our promotion season and by the time he was fit again he couldn't get back in the team. He was a very good second tier striker and served us well the time he was here.

2 Goals from Malcolm Poskett in this FA Cup victory away to Wolves. This was a big scalp at the time. Luther scores the third goal with such glee that GT decided that it was time for him to be moved back into the main forward line after having concerns that he was becoming jaded.
