I suppose some moved to Jenrick because he’d be more easily beaten by members, whilst others moved to Kemi because she’s not quite as idiotic and extreme. It’s hard to vote tactically when both alternatives are terrible. Allowing members the final vote on party leaders (without members having to go through proper screening, or even necessarily being able to vote for the party) is one of the worst policies ever invented, probably the biggest weakness in our electoral system to malign influences and has led to the vast majority of **** ups in the last 15 years.
Well, it’s not “our electoral system”, it’s an internal party matter and as such could easily be changed.
As long as parties benefit from donations, they’ll continue to offer as many perks as they can to get members. Given the overall threat to democracy, some central, cross party laws are needed
Political parties are private organisations though. Does the state have the lawful power to prescribe how they conduct themselves? It would be different if there were state funding (which I would support).
The comment was somewhat tongue in cheek (as a matter of law, Parliament can do what it wants, ulimately) but this isn't a straightforward matter. If Parliament were to legislate to tell the parties how to choose their leaders, that is effectively state regulation of the internal workings of political parties which is a significant break with constitutional tradition - probably convention - in this country. It might be lawful, but would it be constitutional? Personally I think it would be a good thing but it certainly wouldn't be uncontroversial.
Sorry I forgot to send a holiday application form. Mrs L and I are topping up our skin cancer in Crete. Staying with friends who had the sense to bugger off here a few years ago. Good to see the lovely Kemi doing well although why anyone would want that gig is hard to see. Regards to all xxx
Yes would be difficult and significant. A simple rule of: "For UK political party internal votes, only eligible UK election voters are allowed" would probably get agreement from all the public - but implementating it from labour in power when it mainly affects the tories would become a political issue that it shouldn't need to be
Tories have a new leader. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c2e7xgx11mgt How long will she last - a popular choice?
She's got her first lies in already. You can't talk about honesty and truth when you're a ****ing despicable **** with views that belong in the dark ages.
Tremendous news. Her appeal is so minimal, and will only decrease the more she reveals to the mainstream what she thinks. Despite how loud right-wingers are, this is a far more moderate country than that minority would have us believe. Badenoch has the terrible problem of sky-high confidence that everyone believes what she believes. There's a lot of that kind of thinking about. Some of the people who might be initially intrigued will be turned off step by step.
Well good luck to her. Typically the first Tory leader after an electoral pasting is just a seat warmer for the next PM. I’m sure she knows that.
One positive thing you can say about the Tories is that they have now had 4 female leaders, 1 leader of Indian heritage and now the first black woman leader. Labour still can't find any non white males to lead their party. They really do need to do better in this regard (although I do appreciate that they don't change leaders as often as the Tories!).
Except that Starmer is in no way left wing whilst Badenoch is maybe way more right wing than most of her party.
Are you referring to the person who has been banging on about recent Tory governments not being right wing enough? The one who characterises every societal development with which she disagrees as ‘part of a woke agenda’ without offering any definition of what is meant by ‘woke’? I think it’s clear she is very right wing.
Clearly picked to take votes back from reform. Although of the two options she is probably slightly less of a loony than Jenrick
I think Jenrick is less of a true rightwing looney. I think he just tried to out right wing Badenoch by saying more outrageous stuff. Sold his soul to win and still lost! I think Badenoch genuinely believes the **** she spouts though!
Is she? She says a lot, but I am yet to be convinced. I mean appointing Priti Patel as shadow home sec is a joke! Probably one of the worst home secretary's of all time! Hardly going to stop the boats is she?!
Fair enough, I must’ve misread that then in my old age! My point remains though that I believe she has right-wing rhetoric but that’s all!
Yes, come on Kemi. It's time to show you mean business so start Goose-stepping around the house of commons
To get the right-wing on side, get elected, get into government again by getting the 'reform vote' back to the Tories and then once in government, yep, you guessed it, do the absolute opposite to what she said and pander to the liberal socialist elitists and left-wing MSM. She's a WEF puppet. Jenrick would've been the same! All shysters.
