To get the juices flowing after our FA Cup third round draw yesterday. Here's MOTD extended highlights of our 4th Round tie away to Grimsby in the 84/85 season complete with traditional seasonal mudbath pitch.

Wasn't Grimsby one of GT's earlier manager reigns? I know he fondly has a connection to the club.

Nice highlights too - pitch reminds me of the Vic after Saracens had played when we used to ground share.

He played for Grimsby. In fact he was once part of a Mariners defense that shipped seven goals at Vicarage Road!

As an aside i wonder if we have ever played a fixture nearer to the open sea?

I think Fleetwood is the closest to the sea. Stockport also.

Stockport is a good hours drive from the sea :) do you mean Southport or Southend maybe ?

Would never have been financially viable with Andre at the club

Watford take a free kick out side the six yard box. Here is where the ball ended up.

Stockport's Edgeley Park is famously the nearest ground to the River Mersey.. but it's quite a way inland. Fleetwood's Highbury ground is about one kilometer from the nearest water. Blackpool, as you'd expect, is pretty close at about 400 meters.. but Blundell Park is half that. I'm pretty sure Grimsby is the nearest to the sea plus it's the lowest above sea level at 2 feet.

Actually i think Cleethorps (where Grimsby's ground is) is classed as being on the Humber estuary.. even though it's thought of as a seaside town. So the question is still open i think.

He was one of the few people with connections to all three Lincolnshire/Humberside clubs (Grimsby, Lincoln, Scunny) where he would get a warm round of applause at whichever those grounds he turned up at.

Wasn't the old Shrewsbury Town ground at Gay Meadow right next to the river and employed a ferryman/boatsperson to retrieve the ball if it was booted out of the ground and landed on the water. Or was that somewhere else?

Went to that FA Cup game on the British Rail special, happy days. Someone decided to throw the trains light bulbs out of the window at passengers as we passed through a station on the way home so it was stopped and the Police came on board and checked the train. Wasn't us!

One thing I remember about that match was jumping on the fencing when we scored and trying to shake it off it's foundations. I think we got close.
Edit: Just found myself in the crowd, back in the days when I had hair!

I thought Luton was closest to the sea. The Sea of Sh1te or Dog Kennel Road as it's sometimes known.

I'd never watched this before but of course Grimsby had future Hornet Paul Wilkinson.

We've never played there Willis. I did think about the Scottish tours we took in the late 70's as a lot of the Scottish grounds are near the sea. The only one i found was Morton though, which is very close to the water but it's classed as a loch there.

True, but I’ve seen a game there (it’s Mrs Willis’s home town). Fortunately it was in August, so the temperature was marginally above freezing.

Can we include Arbroath on the seaside tour? Next to the beach and the Pleasureland fun fair.

I would love to trump your knowledge bank Stevo and say the obscure Crown Meadow of Lowestoft Town (a ground I have been to many times given family connections) but I believe the answer could well be as simple at Vetch Field which was famously the closet to the sea if memory serves me right when Blundell Park is discounted for the reason you give.

Back to Grimsby....I wasn't at the game in question but a few years later went up there with a couple of mates and was literally stoned off the beach by a gang of local teenagers on chopper bikes.

    Great opening post RegV.

Errrm....actually I have Otter. With work back in the day. We hired it in the evening, had a kickaround, got very sweaty very quickly, then followed by a BBQ.

Some work destinations are better than others. I've had more than my fair share of both.

I did a little research.. Lowestoft Town's Crown Ground, where we did play an Fa cup game in 1967, is give or took 950 meters from the water. Not the closest but it would be the most easterly point we have played a game in the UK. The Vetch was about 350 meters from the beach.. so may well have held the title of the closest in the football league at one point. I think the closest currently is probably Blackpool at 400 meters or so. Unless you counted the harbour at Hartlepool which is slightly closer.
Looking at our friendly fixtures then the game we played in Gibraltar in 1979 might take some beating. About 200 meters from the harbour.. and 100 meters from the runway of the airport!

One ground near the sea i'd love to visit.. Rannagh Park on Arranmore island off the coast of Donegal. I'm guessing they play regular games against Craggy island!
