I think it may be a sign of things to come, so a Spain win might not be far off. It seems like the attitude/effort of the Big 5 has changed in the past few years:
    2018: Germany 4th, Italy 5th
    2019: Italy 2nd
    2021: Italy 1st, France 2nd
    2022: UK 2nd, Spain 3rd

Between 2012 and 2017 only one Big 5 act got in the top 5, since 2018 there have been 7.

I did wonder who will host next year if Ukraine can't, there was talk of the UK even before we came 2nd, however it surely has to be Poland?

Poor old Cliff denied Eurovision victory by General Franco rigging the vote when it was held in Spain. He's still bitter about it, the sanctimonious s0d. Hahahaha LOL

In the "expert" voting, you still get Serbia and Croatia, voting for each other, Cyprus voting for Greece, and other local blocs doing the same, even if it was someone making farting noises with their armpit and blowing through a paper and comb. This could be eliminated by viewing past voting records over 10 years and a warning issued, that said country would be suspended from competing if they were that bloody blatant about it.

National Treasure. Right up there with Constable, Newton, Marlowe and the rest. We're all on a summer holiday taking the michael out of our Austrian training camp....

There will be talk of a Eurovision SuperLeague next and use of co-efficients. Countries like San Marino and Luxembourg will have to out sing (I use the term loosely) each other.

I don’t think you can do that. The voting for neighbouring countries isn’t just mindless favouritism. It happens because those countries have lots of people from their neighbours living there or are effectively a second country of the same culture or because you are likely to prefer or understand better the musical trends of countries whose culture you share. Lastly, you may already be aware of the performers.

So if Ireland’s entry was pop sung in English or even tinged with Irish folk, that’s much more familiar to UK audiences, let alone factor in the number of Irish people or Irish descended people in the UK. This also works within Scandinavia or between Balkan countries.

What’s frankly bizarre is the Australian jury nulpointing the UK entry.

Happy Ukraine won it and when you look at the public voting below there was never any doubt.
However, look at the Greek and Australian public votes where the "professional" juries decided to give us 0 points and it shows how out of touch they are. I'm another who thinks the whole thing should be public vote only from next year.

    Jury Votes:
Not a single point from Greece, Armenia, Croatia & Australia

    EuroJury.jpg

    Public Vote:
Greece 5 points, Armenia 1 point, Croatia 0 points & Australia 7 points. Obviously the Croatians and Armenians didn't particularly like it, but it appears Greece and Australia have an axe to grind still.

If it was based on the public vote only, (obviously Ukraine was a one off), then we'd have been 4th, but it would have been genuine. Sams scores from the public shows the song was far from the most popular.

One interesting thing I spotted was that Italy's public were the only country not to give Spain a point!

On the shoutbox we all raved about the Moldovan entry and the Spanish soft porn show and those are reflected in the public scores.

Until you see that their public vote only gave us 2 points, (the same as we gave them). The hatred is still there.

Yes, but across all countries voting was quite random. Until you analyse all of those biases you can’t really say if those against the UK were special.

Then you’d also have to drill into other factors. Were juries more favourable towards us generally younger for example?

The fact that the Greek jury passed on it, but the public there found it their sixth most popular song is pretty underwhelming as conspiracies go. It’s not a science. The German entry got no jury votes at all, but some public ones.

Our song was ok, but hardly Bohemian Rhapsody. If some people want to pass on it that’s ok by me. And as you point out, the jury system actually favoured the UK.

And the Spanish entry was derivative drivel.

Let it go. It’s a fun system and not to be taken too seriously.

Post-Eurovision needs to happen. Usually it's to speculate why Europe hate us so much but this year it's for anti Greek/Australian rhetoric. I'm genuinely disappointed that we can't host it next year as I really need to attend one of these.

Of course there could be a connection as Australia has, in Melbourne, the third largest ‘Greek’ city.

I like the combination of jury and public.

I think the jury generally picked the best songs, which were Spain's, Sweden's and ours. They also suffer less from 'order bias' than the public. And I've also read that to win the Eurovision, jury biases don't matter too much as biases even themselves out, and the best songs are nearly always at the top (although the middle-order is heavily swayed by bias).

The public don't necessarily like songs to be as pop-like and generic as the jury. Which is often a good thing, although you do get stupid situations where Serbia (the worst/ second worse song of the evening) gets a huge number of votes (although this could have been a pro-Russia/ anti-Ukraine vote?)

I think the Serbia vote was more that the public likes to be contrary sometimes and vote for a completely “out there” act, rather than for any political reasons.

Kerrist!!!!!!! I'm having Litho flashbacks. On the Sunday after voting the largest daily, Lietuvos rytas, would produce a special edition full of charts and graphs looking for voting patterns and full commentary on other countries' votes for Lithuania from cultural and political perspectives. A 30 page newspaper devoted to this incisive stuff.

The Litho 'protest' entry was in 2006.

I think the UK equivalent line up to LT United would be: Harry Hill, Thom Yorke, That Bloke out of the Band that Shall Not be Named of these Fora, Charlie Brooker and Ant & Dec.
