This may be the first year no one complains about political voting. A shame it’s also the first year that the UK might actually do ok. Never mind; if we’re up there with Ukraine, it’s a win win.

People need to think before they vote. Do they fancy going to Ukraine for next year's contest?

If Russian tanks were rolling down the Mall, and the Royal Family strung up on lampposts, we'd still get nil points from the French

Never underestimate the hatred towards the UK. Top 10 at best.

Well done the UK! That was a surprize - not Ukraine winning of course, that was always going to happen and a welcome slap in the face for those pesky Ruskies. But the UK coming second?! I'm not a fan of pop songs overall but that was a decent tune sung by a personable, wholesome young singer.

Great show last night, hopefully a lot less ballads next year. A couple of sorrowful songs are ok but not near 70% of acts.

Doesn’t seem to be the case this morning.

Thing is, can you name an entry of ours since Katrina won that was worthy of its place? I can’t.

  16. Why has everyone stopped hating us?

I get the Ukraine love in obviously, but how have we gone from nil point regulars to second suddenly?

They didn’t hate us. That’s been our self-indulgent, go to excuse for poor performance in many different arenas of cultural and political life.

12 points from them this year!

What a night. Sam Ryder has done more for national pride than anyone since Churchill, but this time it's with less racism.

The turning point for UK entries was Bucks Fizz winning in 1981 with a song your average four-year old would find trite.

It’s been pure bilge all the way since.

Actually ditto this to Brotherhood of Shyte in 1976.

Sorry, is this a list of awful UK entries?

I think you've missed a great deal of context there, ie. The pure bilge they were up against.

I think it's slowly morphed into something approaching a genuine song contest along the way, but it's traditionally been a celebration of the worst of pop, interspersed with the occasional and probably accidental banger.

It was a weird feeling last night during the voting. So used to getting 2 points from someone and feeling really grateful. This year, if someone gave us 2 points the reaction was “ what the ****, piss off” (case in point, the bloody Ozzies).

It wasn’t the worst of pop at the beginning. Kitsch and twee maybe, but there were pleasant and charming winners into the seventies.

Europe took the wrong lesson from Abba. It decided that their win meant gimmicks were required, rather than following the trends in popular music. Through the late seventies the UK had great pop, disco, punk, reggae and ska. We ignored them all and put out decades of pliable third and fourth raters from stage schools trying to emulate the Fizzers.

You are right that the overall standard is much higher now and each year there are a handful of excellent compositions across the nations and some stand out moments.

Aussies, Cyprus, Greece and Armenia I recall being particularly angry at.

Most of the longer standing European nations served us well. It was all the tin pot former Soviet republics and Yugoslav states that dissed us.

Currently have Norway's banger on repeat. Love how they got stuck with a rhyming word for teeth and ended up with Kieth.

Great result for the UK last night, I expected us to do well but didn't for a second think I'd be disappointed with 2nd - well done Sam.

I've said for years that Europe doesn't hate us, but that we always send insultingly bad acts and deserve to come last. We have one of the most successful music industries in the world, yet send people like Scooch or Englebert Humperdinck. Europeans aren't stupid, they know we're taking the piss so vote accordingly.

We finally take it seriously, send a good act and finish second. Any other year and we'd have won, but it was pretty much mathematically impossible this year - out of 39 other countries Ukraine got 439 points, which means only 3 countries didn't give them 12!

The only complaint I'd have about Sam was that he didn't come off of that podium and own the stage more, not that it'd have made up the points difference.

I suppose it’s a matter of personal choice but I thought in general the ballads were better songs than the shouty ones.
Overall Eurovision has upped it’s game compared with 20 years or so ago, both in quality of songs and the improved voting system.
    Fewer, by the way.

It’s typical Spain and U.K. send in good songs in the year no one but Ukraine could win. Wasted opportunity. We’ve not won since 1968. UK I think was in the nineties with Katrina and the Waves.

Oh well, but the consolation prize for the U.K. is they will host the event next year.
