The five games he started seem to show the coach losing faith in him given the minutes he had on the pitch were 82, 62, 60, 53, 45 and then hasn't been seen since, despite being fit. They were also involved in a Europa League campaign that he wasn't eligible for, so he should've been a good rotation option for La Liga but much like at Watford, seems the head coach didn't fancy him/trust him enough.

Now we all moaned at Quina being let go, but would he have got in the team ahead of Zinckernagel and Cleverley? Yes, we've managed Quina terribly, but Cleverley has been particularly important to us, and while Zinckernagel has been, like Quina, frustrating at times, he's also had his moments (more so than Quina I would say). Does Quina have a place for us in the Prem, or do we let him go at try and raise some funds? It's a tricky one, because there might not be a place in the team for him (and certainly the biggest thing he needs now is a regular run of games), but could he be the kind of player who's more suited to the Prem than the Championship? Certainly looked very bright when given the chance in the Prem

    My favourite was this one

"No serious or well run club loans out Quina and signs Gosling - it just doesn’t happen. We’re ran by people who don’t know what they’re doing; seems like that anyway"

Quina has scored twice in 6 games - 1 in 3 goals ratio in La Liga albeit in a very low number of games. As many goals as Pedro managed in the championship in his last 27 games from open play.

Are you suggesting Quina is a better player than Pedro?

Possibly, but as you have already admitted you underestimated the ability of our players earlier this season.

Personally, I think he has sufficient talent to do well in the Premier League in the next year or two. Bearing in mind, he is still only 21 and Doucoure, for example, didn't even come to us until he was 23.

We are too quick to write off young talent in my view, and I think he will be a useful bench option and occasional starter next season.

I think the more relevant point is that despite him scoring on his first two starts, they've given him progressively less playing time and now he hasn't featured for five weeks despite being fit. The coach has obviously decided that his long range goal threat isn't enough to outweigh whatever other doubts he has about him.

    Unused sub again yesterday.

It has been over a month since his last game (subbed off at HT on the 21st March).

I've always thought that Quina is underrated. He looks good whenever I've seen him, and is another 'talent for the future' type player.

So why do none of his managers play him ? Similar to Penaranda who everyone said looked great but was never trusted by any of his managers.

Does he not need more than that at this stage though? Would he not be better off going on loan to an upper mid-table/play-off chasing Championship club or a continental lower top flight team?

  14. zztop

    zztop Eurovision Winner 2015

Yes possibly, but then he would need to be playing. I think some players will be better in the Prem than in the Championship, Quina is one, and I think Zinc may be another. I also think Quina will be better under Xisco than he was under Ivic, mainly due to the general positive play.

I just hope he isn't got rid of for peanuts.

Who's gonna be our advanced midfielder then? The Prem is almost certainly beyond Clev next season despite a good season in the Championship, both Quina and Zinckernagel have talent but neither are definitely Prem level so it wouldn't surprise me if we buy someone in that position

I really thought we were going to have an exciting young core of players with Quina, JP, Wilmot and Ngakia, but it hasn't quite happened, even in the Championship it's one thing to buy up good young talent, another thing to properly develop them

Managers don't always play young players. There could have been more midfielders ahead of him in Granada, and the same playing for us. There are more factors to team selection than quality. That's how Deeney managed a load of games this year.

Why was Doucoure not played when he arrived? Why were both De Bruyne and Salah got rid of by Chelsea?

I don't think Xisco has really had a chance with Quina, and maybe Pearson didn't think he was the right sort of "battler" at the wrong end of the table, and being young, and maybe Ivic didn't want players that were enterprising and attacking - he did his best to ruin Sarr.

There could be a number of reasons why these players are not liked by failed managers. Who knows?

Doucoure at least had a good spell at Rennes under his belt, plus a successful loan at Granada.

De Bruyne and Salah struggled to break into a fantastic Chelsea team, but both had successful stints before Chelsea and on loan from Chelsea.

Quina on the other hand wasn't good enough for the Championship and seems like he isn't wanted by Granada now either.

He certainly still has time on his side, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up not making the grade at PL level.

Granada always seemed an odd move for him. He should go on loan to a bottom-half La Liga side next season to try and get more minutes, before said club makes a reasonable offer to buy him from us the following summer. I'm not convinced he'll make it here.

I said this I think, and I standby it. Gosling is still a naff signing regardless if he scored against Norwich. We’ve now got an ageing midfielder on the books who’s not good enough for the Prem and we’ll struggle to get rid of. It’s just not good business

He played a key part in helping us get promoted with 2 goals and 1 assist. There'll also be plenty of Champ clubs who would happily take him this summer if we were happy to let him leave, it wouldn't be a "struggle" at all.

He didn’t play a key part, he was fine. And most championship clubs couldn’t afford his wages, nor would they pay a fee for him

I'm not convinced that he wasn't good enough for the Championship, just nothing about his game suits playing in a 442 at all, he would've been much better in Xiscos 433 imo.

That's a fair opinion to have, and I share it for Hungbo. I don't think it's fair to assume they'll never be capable of holding their own at that level though, considering their age.

Especially harsh to completely rule out Quina, seeing as he's so far scored a goal every 216 minutes in the PL/La Liga. Albeit from a small sample size.

He's made 32 senior League appearances in his career, most of which were sub appearances or out of position. He needs to learn when to release the ball, and choose the right areas to demonstrate his dribbling ability. He could also do with bulking up like JP did.

But imo he's shown enough promise that I think we'd be making an error if we don't get him signed up to a new deal and see what he can do with an actual run of starts, whether that's here or at a more suitable loan club.

Quina's form at the start of the season was one of the biggest disappointments of the last year. Ivic gave him numerous chances and you could see that when there were breaks in play quite often he would call him over and try to give him a pep talk. It looked like Ivic wanted him to be the main creative force. The overplaying is one thing (and he did slow down a lot of our attacks taking 4-5 touches when he could've moved it on with 2) but what was more baffling and is sometimes forgotten is how badly his technique frequently let him down. There were a lot of passes straight out of play or to the opposition under no pressure at all that were just bizarre for a clearly gifted footballer.

May be wrong but I just don't think he has it - and it's not a physical thing. I don't think he needs to bulk up, he just doesn't have the decision making or confidence to influence games. And yes, 21 is young but it's not that young in footballing terms and he's not developed as we'd all hoped.

Again, fair assessment. I was massively disappointed, especially after how impressive he was against Spurs in pre season.

I'd agree he hasn't developed as hoped, but I'd say we haven't provided the right opportunities for him to develop. Since he joined we've had, on paper, one of the best midfields outside of the PL top six. He was never going to be given the run of starts he needed, and should have been loaned out somewhere he could have developed his qualities and identify and iron out his shortcomings.

He was given semi-regular starts under a defensive coach in a formation that didn't suit him in any way. Much like playing Abdi and Hughes as wingers, we didn't see the best of him, but doesn't mean he's a bad player.

He was great when he burst onto the scene under Javi, but last year was an utter waste, I don't think he made a single league start? There is clearly a player there, but he desperately needs games, and I don't think we'll be able to offer him that. Problem is, he's got a year left on his contract, and even if he extends, a good loan away and he's not gonna want to play in the Championship next season if we go down

  33. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

As SLB says, he has faults in his game, and regardless, we've looked best this season with Clev in that position harrying the opposition which isn't really Quina's game. Will we need someone like, which isn't Quina's game

Ability is there but his decision making is awful, he’s a liability in front of the defence as he just over complicated things all the time and losses possession. He looked much better further forward, but again he still over complicates too much, it was just less costly there when he did. He really needs some proper one on one coaching, realistically he was never going to get that from us this season with so many games and barely any time to train properly. He’s not going to get that on loan either as he’s not their player. He probably needs a situation like Garner where he goes to a championship team so poor, he’ll be the best player regardless and hopefully he can learn on the job over time.

Whenever this man got on the pitch I have thought he looks like a decent player, but the management do not seem to fancy him? Personally I think he might be worth retaining for next seasons squad when hopefully he will begin to shine in the PL.
