Ahead of a World Cup winning captain albeit not as he once was and the Newcastle guy is viewed as one of the best when fit?

Other 2 maybe - at different ages of their careers - can be error prone.

Ahead of Lloris and Dubravka?? No chance.

Will never ever take Lloris over Foster. He has been playing behind good defenders at club and country yet still concede silly goals.

Statsbomb has a metric that's similar, for every shot that's taken it tracks the goalkeepers position (and every other players position) and where the shot is taken from - from this (and their other data) it can work out the optimal position for the goalkeeper. They can then extrapolate that across every single shot the keeper has faced that season to build a metric called Positioning Error.

They define Positioning Error as: How far from the optimal position for facing a shot the Goalkeeper is (on average). This metric is modelled from a starting point of the average location of goalkeepers from 20 shots from similar locations and the deviation from that average is the distance away from the "optimal" location for any given goalkeeper location on a shot.

Out of the 25 goalkeepers in the PL to have played at least 600 mins, Foster ranks 23rd - interestingly Ederson ranks 24th and Alisson 25th whilst David De Gea comes out on top - seems like there's potentially a lot of noise around goalkeeper playstyle, Ederson and Alisson are obviously sweeper keepers who come out big distances so can potentially be caught out, whilst DDG is notorious for being stuck to his line so will naturally be closer to having the "perfect" angle.

They also have "Goalkeeper Aggressive Distance" which tracks "An average value of how far from the goal the goalkeeper is coming forward to perform defensive actions.", when mapped against the Positioning Error metric there's an interesting correlation as you'd expect - generally the more aggressive the distance the more likely to make a Positioning Error (although Pope is a good outlier here!)

Do they have a stat on goalkeepers that don't move off their line and look like they're grappling with their umbrella on a very windy day?

That is such a damning photo. Keeper trying so to make sure he doesn’t get hurt and defenders leaving the high ball to the keeper to punch given its only 3 yards out.

Exactly. The answer to anyone arguing that he should be first choice keeper is to show this picture. Or a selection from the West Ham game.

That really is pathetic from Bachmann. It’s probably our inability to draw tight games that will cost us in the end as well.

Looks terrified on the pitch, and just has that look of somebody that's totally shitting themselves. Meanwhile off the pitch he'll be monitoring the reported interest in him from Real Madrid and assess his options in the summer

It started from when you said 'they'. Who are 'they'? Where do 'they' come from? What do 'they' eat and like to do in their spare time?

Once you've answered these questions I have some follow ups about 'also'.

I don't get how the actual graph reads who is the best and who is the worst according to the graph? By the way do all these statistics actually tell us if any individual has performed badly, or could the way the rest of the team have played distort the figures?

I don't need statistics to tell me that Foster and Bachmann are terrible. However, the statistics tell me that Foster and Bachmann are terrible.

The axis on the left hand side is from bottom to top - so the lower down they are compared to the left hand side means they make the least amount of errors with their positioning - which in the graph below would be McCarthy + De Gea as they're the lowest on that axis. The bottom axis looks at how far away from the goal (in metres) the GK usually performs defensive actions. So the GKs on the furthest right hand side are the most aggreisve. So Pope is the most aggressive goalkeeper in the division, closely followed by Ederson and Alisson. Then you can compare both at the same time to see who's both aggressive and who makes least the least amount of positioning errors - Pope comes out very well here. I wouldn't use these as gospel for evaluating goalkeepers as there's a lot of other stuff that these stats don't capture, but they're a relatively good gauge on positioning. But then team playstyle will also effect these - for instance if you're coming a long way off your line, then there's a good chance that you'll be caught out and have a major positioning error which may throw out the stats slightly (think Foster vs Wolves!)

I put this in which hopefully makes it easier to understand.

Always thought Pope is insanely good at coming off his line. Obviously the facts back that up.

It's amazing really he's such a stand out at this. I would have thought it's one of the most fundamental and vital skills of a keeper

If that game was played under Roy, we certainly would have gotten a point.

Much more sense than Foster. Almost difficult to see him being here next season but that seems to point he might be.

Well Austria aren't at the World Cup, and given his own underwhelming performances, the penny may have dropped that there won't be much interest in him. If his head is in the right place, I guess we might as well keep him and let him fight it out with Okoye, although I highly doubt he'll be able to play the Championship on easy mode like he did last time

I'm not sure that makes much sense, though I still don't really understand the signing of Okoye to begin with.

Both are still at least worth a few £mil, and given how much we'll need to invest in the rest of the team to get us promoted having a few £mil in saleable assets which we really don't need just sitting on the bench doesn't really make sense.

  35. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

Agreed that the signing of Okoye does make little sense, especially for that price, but a) we're gonna need someone half-decent as backup (especially in this day and age when someone can test positive for Covid just like that), and b) Bachmann won't fetch much at all if we were to sell him, he's basically had one good season up in Scotland, and one competent half season in the Championship
