We can't sign a whole new squad though can we ? I'm saying having four "OKish" keepers of a broadly similar quality makes no sense.

Fair point but we cannot buy 3/4 at once .

As much stick as Bachmann gets for crosses and having his feet welded to the floor at times - I do feel he cares about our plight more than Foster. Yes he makes mistakes but he is not an awful keeper. I would be more
than happy for Daniel to win the gloves back, especially at this present time. What any keeper we have cannot vouch for is our dreadful defense.

Bachmann is a shyt keeper but Foster should not ever play for us again. He could not care less about WFC.

@reids coming up with the goods again. These are current Season stats so far.

    From StatsBomb:

GSAA% - Goals Saved Above Average Percentage: How the Goalkeeper performed versus expectation. Calculated as: (PSxG - Goals)/Shots Faced

Positioning Error - How far from the optimal position for facing a shot the Goalkeeper is (on average).

CCAA% tries to answer how active are GKs at gathering claimables - high balls and crosses into the box that could be claimed.

GK Aggressive Distance - How active are GKs generally at moving off of their goal line

Pass into Danger% - Percentage of Passes made where the recipient was under pressure or otherwise in Danger.

Positive Outcome Contribution - How frequently is the player involved in sequences that soon resolve with a Postiive Outcome. A positive outcome is recorded when any of the following events happening within 20 seconds of a goalkeeper's pass: free kicks earned in the attacking half, corner kicks earned, shots attempted, and penalties earned.

Unsurprisingly, Foster's claimed more crosses than Bachmann. He just edges Bachmann in the shot stopping area and has a surprisingly high positive outcome metric too compared to Bachmann. (This can be explained with his more direct passing, meaning a player like Sarr when he gets on the end of it forces the opposition to react for example while Bachmann more likely plays it shorter to a full back) His very high positioning is also notable. (He took a large number of crosses right on the edge of the 18 yeard box v Liverpool yesterday and claimed balls in behind frequently because of this.)

That however is where the positives end for Foster. His positioning has been horrific; looking one of the worst in the league when facing shot attempts while Bachmann conversly has been positionally sound when facing shots. Furthermore, Foster's passing is very bad for retaining possesion by virtue of this stat indicating either his vision or his passing is not good enough to spot players in more suitable positions, while Bachmann is very adept at playing smart, possesion retaining passes. In the Premier League in a team where we are already struggling to keep possesion, this is not even acceptable for the Championship. It's surprising how many crosses Bachmann appears to have claimed given how criticised he is here for this (And I've also been one of them) but it's also glaring how polar opposite they are in their positioning, with neither really a healthy value.

Of the two, Bachmann overall to me is a more suitable option. Apart from his natural aggresive (and lack of) positioning, Bachmann is both to the eye test and current stats the better goalkeeping options for our needs if we are to stay up. We do need to invest in the goalkeeping department imminently in any situation, but for the here and now we have to play Bachmann because is is the better overall goalkeeper who is an equal shot stopper but can also retain possesion very well and is a more stable option with his better inate positional sense.

Where's the stat about how trusted each is by their defence? Because against Wolves it was painfully obvious our defenders had almost no faith in Bachmann, who is far too wedded to his 6yd box. Unless that changes then bringing him in is pointless.

Id rather give Dahlberg a chance than either of these duds.

Yes he looks like zelda from terrahawks, but sooner or later we are going to have to overlook that and give him the gloves.

He's not ready for another season minimum . Better shot stopper than either of them I would say, but his handling and distribution still needs work.

I've never seen him play apart from those errors he made the other month.

But I just have zero confidence in our keepers anymore. Sad times, as historically we've always had an ace keeper.

Meslier and Krul are superior to our current 2. Not even that close really either! Not saying they are wonder keepers. But they are better.

Krul is also exactly the type of GK Gino will sign for free in a few years when he is 36, rather than spending any money.

Bachmann is 27, with four Premier League matches under his belt. He reached the peak of his Watford career last season. His performance at Spurs was very poor. We should have sold him in the summer and invested the money on the ticketing system.

Not saying that Bachmann is anywhere near as good as Martinez, but he only really burst into life when he was past 25, does age really matter that much when you're a goalkeeper? Bachmann could be around for another decade plus, and given he's played less than 100 career games, he still has the capacity to improve I'm sure

I think if you’re going to be really good you show It a young age, Donnarumma being the extreme example.

Italy is blessed with fantastic young keepers - Donnarumma, Meret and Scuffet (last 2 products of Udinese) - oldest being Scuffet at 25. The problem with Bachmann is at 27 he's regressing...he's got the skillset but he's not developing. It's obvious the defence doesn't trust him to relieve pressure because they drop deeper and stay deep. He's got a confidence problem which is a red flag considering he's Austria's first choice - he should be brimming with it.

  21. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Scuffet has been farmed out on loans all over the place and not impressed sufficiently enough to ever be Udinese’s No.1. Last season he was in Serie B and this summer he was sold to a club in Cyprus for less than £300k.

Not sure how Bachmann can be accused of regressing but Scuffet is a fantastic young GK!

So you're saying Bachmann has improved?

    All evidence to the contrary.

  23. Burnsy

Quite possible he’s just remained at the same level but the opposition has improved.

I’m under no illusions that neither of our options are really good enough for the PL and should have been improved upon. Bachmann is basically the same as Xisco - wasn’t going to be good enough but kindness relented and some felt he ‘deserved a shot’.

But I don’t think Bachmann is regressing no. I just don’t think he was ever that great. I do think he’s better than Foster though. I also think he has room to improve and grow - but he will never do that to a great extent for as long as we churn out dreadful defenders in front of him.

Fair comment. I think he's regressing as he came for crosses last season, but this season he looked a nervous wreck when the ball comes into the box. His distribution (especially against Spurs) wasn't good.

It could be down to confidence but as I said, he's Austria's first choice so he should have plenty. I'm not slating him as he does have the skillset, it just seems he's gone backwards.

Bachmann should be number 1 for the rest of the season unless we can convince David James out of retirement. End of.

How can we tell if Bachmann is regressing though? He's only played two regular spells of football since joining us 4 years ago:

    Kilmarnock - 21 games, 16 conceded, 11 clean sheets

Last season - 23 games, 13 conceded, 13 clean sheets

Why is he suddenly regressing now he's had a few shaky performances at a level far beyond anything he's played at before? I'd say he's been very good for us and Kilmarnock and maybe the PL is beyond him, I don't think he's necessarily regressing though and he still has time to improve.

Any GK in the world would be a nervous wreck and look fairly sh1t if they had to play behind our bunch of cowards in defence. I’m convinced of that.

At least Bachmann will do it without sucking off opposition goalscorers and having ‘bantz’ about it a few days later on YouTube. He probably won’t get Conor McGregor a ticket in the Rookery either just because he supports Man Utd and he wants ‘clicks’.

I'd imagine he'd win quite a few 1-on-1's just through the discomfiture felt by the attacker when he takes his glance up to help him decide where to place the shot...

Sorry you've lost the plot now. What you're advocating is any keeper wouldn't come for a cross in between the 6 yard box and penalty spot because he has an average defence in front of him - that's just ridiculous - if anything a good keeper would come out more.

As for the second part of your non-sequitur tirade, I won't comment on that as it's clear it's just personal for you.

As they are also doing with Foster in goal, so maybe it's the hangover of Xisco's 'tactics'?

You don’t get sarcasm do you?

And it’s not a tirade - nor is it personal against Foster. I actually quite like the bloke! But I 100% believe that the off-field behaviour increasingly affects his on-field performances. And when he’s already naturally declining, that’s a pretty sorry state of affairs. I’m sorry if you don’t like hearing it. But it’s not a vendetta of any kind.
