Brits abroad. Couple on quarantined cruise ship demand Boris, Richard Branson, anyone, fly them home. This is in spite of being told if they test negative they can finished their quarantine on shore in Japan.

This begs the question as to why anyone wants to go on a cruise ship. To me all cruise holidays just seem like a noravirus ridden ferry run by Butlins, so on the whole, these two don’t seem to be having such a bad time of it.

Yes I can't think of anything worse than being trapped on a floating chunk of metal in the middle of the sea with thousands of typical holiday-cruise types. Living hell even without the various virus options....Mind you having flown back from Tanzania yesterday into Amsterdam and then onto Heathrow, both in gales, maybe I can see the appeal. And I'd also have avoided a crash between 2 safari jeeps at a combined 60mph in lion/leopard habitat. I'm fine other than a few bruises thanks for asking....

But but but...he voted Tory and loves Boris. He didn't do that for nothing. He ticks all the boxes to qualify for an immediate taxpayer funded extraction.

    Yes and no imo.

Fortunately the mortality rate is relatively low. That is of little comfort to those in high risk groups ( the old, very young, those with existing health issues etc). But it is very similar to flu in that regard.

Someone from the World Health Organisation did make a good point yesterday. There will be a more deadly risk of a virus pandemic one day, that is almost a certainty. Many of the lessons we are currently learning from Convid-19 will be used to prevent those viruses spreading in the future.

It a small positive that can be taken from this outbreak at least!

Sounds like containment to China has failed and it's pretty much everywhere now, wouldn't be surprised if hundreds or even thousands have had it in the UK but with relatively mild symptoms. Guess the plan is to keep everyone calm and delay it till it gets warmer and there's more preparation to isolate those that get it.

I think to be on the safe side they should shut down London and let me work from home for the next few weeks.

You say that but it can change in an instant like the situation in Italy did. A few days ago Italy had 3 known cases. Now it has hundreds with places in complete lock down. I'm sure those in lock down wish they had stocked up more/prepared better (obviously they won't be left to starve but I'm sure the food they'll be given is fairly basic).

In better news, China's active cases is down to around 45,500 now. They seem to be over the worst of it.

ITK scientists are saying that there is a 49% chance it will slowly decline and disappear entirely, a 49% chance it will become a seasonal strain of the flu which can be vaccinated against and a 2% chance that it will kill around 10 million people worldwide.

Yeah but that's because there's only 100,000 people left in China.

We're all now in the Covid-19 generation.

Was out shopping this morning. Baked beans almost ran out at the ASDA on The Dome this morning. Waiting for new stock tomorrow but can see it getting silly in a few weeks.

    Nothing whatsoever to worry about.

Donald Trump, stable man and great genius, has already informed us that the Coronavirus will just go away in April, miraculously. You know, when it gets a little warmer.

We have 'fairly basic' food in any case and are used to skipping the occasional meal. A fortnight in quarantine sounds wonderful to me. Bit of peace and quiet, chance to catch up on my sleep and my reading.

By the way, curse the "staunch Tory" middle class and their jet-setting, skiing and cruising layabout lifestyle. Thanks for infecting us all and killing loads of rosy-cheeked babies and pensioners. Us poor should take out one of those class actions against every last man Timothy of 'em for manslaughter.

Of course,If I were in charge, the RAF would be over to bomb that cruise ship to the bottom of the ocean. Proper and decisive containment. Then they'd really have something to whinge about.

It's the cruise ship staff I feel sorry for. I bet our Tory elders are giving them the most terrible runaround. Demanding this and demanding that. They'll be like old man steptoe when he was in bed with a bad back. "Steward! Stew-a-a-rddd!

In 2018 the WHO said there were 400,000 deaths among the reported 228 million reported Malaria cases. Measles cases were above 350,000 with 38,000 deaths. Until they develop a vaccine the virus will be considered a threat to world health. Once they have it, will go down to the level of attention as Rubella. Where worldwide immunisation as seen cases fall from 671,000 in 2000 to 15,000 in 2018.

So far this year 16,000 people have died of the flu in the USA alone. Each year between 37 - 187 children die in the USA of flu, an average of 92. So in context, this new virus seems to be getting a somewhat higher profile than a virus most people would not change their activities to avoid.

It is the lack of knowledge and vaccine for this new virus that is creating the worldwide reaction. After all who would have ruled out the Rio Olympics because of the threat of Malaria infections?

I would only start to panic another more virulent and deadly variation of the Corona Virus emerges soon. Something like the Spanish Flu pandemic which is estimated to have killed 3% and infected 33% of the world population. A one in ten fatality following infection.

Yes another virus without a vaccine. Nasty for unborn children, but reasonably benign for adults without underlying health issues

You want to hoard coffee, chocolate and shampoo. Affordable to buy in bulk, long storage life, easy to sell with high levels of demand at a good premium during a shortage - Not essential for life, so no one is going to break into your house to confiscate it.
