    Update:

One dead (unidentified at the moment) and 61 injured is the preliminary balance of a massive accident that occurred after seven o'clock on the evening of this Friday, January 10th on the western ring road of the city of Camag*ey, when two buses from the eastern provinces collided.

(One Transmetro under the rental system from the Songo-la Maya terminal, Santiago de Cuba and the other from the Military Construction Company).

54 adults are being treated, 5 of them in critical condition with life-threatening conditions, 3 of them undergoing surgery for severe blunt abdominal trauma, who at the time of closing the information are recovering from anesthesia for transfer to the corresponding care room, the rest under constant observation for possible complications.

The Eduardo Agramonte Piña Pediatric Hospital is treating 7 infants, all of them without life-threatening conditions although with moderately severe trauma, two of them in the intermediate room and five in the surgery room.

The Governor of Camag*ey, Jorge Enrique Sutil Sarabia, added that it is important to activate the information protocols for relatives, and detailed that they communicated with the authorities of the province of Granma for the transfer of the same, who will receive the necessary care.

Likewise, the protection of the property of the injured is guaranteed, as well as the safe return to their homes of the travellers who did not suffer any injury.

The first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the province, Federico Hernández Hernández, explained that the causes of the crash are being investigated and highlighted the response of the local authorities, local residents and especially the medical staff, young and experienced, in serving the patients with professionalism and sensitivity.

Now reported that the deceased was one of the bus drivers. Unfortunately another lady has since passed away in hospital.

People at the scene reckon one of the buses was merging on to the carretera central - Cuba's motorway and seemed to be 'unfamiliar' with the road layout. The junction is poorly lit and marked (like most unfortunately) and it would have been about dusk.

I have a friend, Nidia, who is a teacher in Havana but has been in precisely Songo-La Maya for new year visiting her mother who is bad with cancer unfortunately.

Because her mum is so bad, she hasn't travelled back yet, but she could easily have been on that bus. I have checked she is OK.

Well, I thought I would report it here because the news is unfortunately completely taken up with the wildfires burning up some rich people's houses just around the corner from us in California.

There will be no room for any word of this tragedy in British media.

Edit: unless it can be blamed on Fidel Castro.

"We've noted that," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Tuesday when asked to comment on US President Donald Trump returning Cuba to the list of countries sponsoring terrorism just hours after taking office.

He added that repeatedly using the so-called list of "state sponsors of terrorism" to impose unilateral sanctions against Cuba is completely groundless. It fully exposes the US hegemonic, domineering and bullying nature.

Guo added that the US removed Cuba's designation and then reinstated it just six days later, as if it were something to be toyed with. It makes people question the credibility of the US as a country.

"The US's full blockade on Cuba over the past six decades or so seriously violates international law and basic norms governing international relations, and has wreaked havoc on Cuba's economy and people's livelihood," Guo said.

The United States Will Announce New Measures to Accelerate the End of the Cuban Dictatorship.

Starting January 30, 2025, at 24:00 Eastern time, the following measures will be implemented:

    1. Suspension of the Sending of Remittances to Cuba:

The United States government will suspend all remittance transfers to Cuba. These funds have historically been exploited by the regime to sustain its repressive apparatus and enrich its elite. The United States cannot continue to indirectly finance a system that oppresses its own people.

    2. Suspension of Direct Commercial Flights to Cuba:

All direct commercial flights from U.S. territory to any airport in Cuba are suspended. This measure seeks to interrupt the regime's access to foreign currency and limit its ability to benefit economically from the flow of travelers between the two countries.

    3. Restrictions for Cuban Exiles Returning to Cuba:

Cuban exiles who have received political asylum or humanitarian parole in the United States will not be able to return to U.S. territory if they decide to travel back to Cuba. The U.S. government maintains that those who fled as political refugees have no justification for returning to the regime from which they sought protection.

    4. Deportation of Cubans with Deportation Orders or Criminal Convictions:

All Cuban citizens in the United States with current deportation orders or criminal convictions will be deported to Cuba. The United States will not be a refuge for those who violate its laws.

    5. Deportation of Persons Linked to the Cuban Regime:

All Cuban citizens who are in the United States and are proven to have had ties to the Cuban regime will be deported. This includes those who have been part of military or paramilitary organizations, held relevant positions in the government, or have been members of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC).

These measures reaffirm the unwavering commitment of the United States to the Cuban people in their fight against tyranny. The United States government believes that these actions will disrupt the financial and operational lines of the regime while empowering the Cuban people to regain their rights and freedoms.

The Department of Homeland Security will oversee the implementation of these policies to ensure their compliance and effectiveness.

This order would be signed by the
    Department of Homeland Security
    United States of America

US-funded Cuban media in limbo after Trump orders USAID closed

Miami-based CubaNet, which received a dedicated $500,000 from USAID in 2024 to engage "on-island young Cubans through shít-stirring half truths, fabrications and an insult to the profession of journalism," last week published an editorial on its site seeking donations from readers.
"We are facing an unexpected challenge: the suspension of key funding that sustained part of our work," the editorial read.

The Madrid-based Diario de Cuba, in a column from Director Pablo Díaz Espí on Friday, launched a similar plea.
"Aid to independent journalism from the U.S. Government is suspended, which makes our work even more arduous," Diaz Espi said.

USAID funding for Cuba-related media amounted to $2.3 million in 2024, according to agency budget reports, the majority earmarked for programs titled "Independent Media and Free Flow of Misinformation."

Foreign Vice Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio called the U.S.-funded media "dependent on its master," in a Friday post on social media.

"Is there anything *independent* about a journalist, an activist or an opposition member who lives off the money paid by the US government through USAID and now feels suffocated when they shut off the tap?," de Cossio said.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC –

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) foreign ministers met on Friday to discuss the United States’ decision to revoke the visas of foreign government officials whose countries employ Cuban doctors and nurses.

This visa restriction policy will also apply to the immediate family members of the government officials.

On February 25, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced, “The expansion of an existing Cuba-related visa restriction policy that targets forced labour linked to the Cuban labour export programme.”

Rubio said this applies to Cuban government officials and, “other individuals, including foreign government officials, who are believed to be responsible for, or involved in, the Cuban labour export programme, particularly Cuba’s overseas medical missions.”

The US Secretary of State said that the Cuban government profits from this “abusive and coercive labour practice, which enriches its regime while depriving Cuban citizens of the medical care they desperately need in their home country.

That's the army of white coats he's talking about. The Henry Reeve medical brigade has spent decades giving medical care to poor people all over the world. Even Italy in the Pandemic. Even Northern Ireland asked them to come.

They don't like the positive publicity it gives. First they said that any Cuban doctor can claim immediate US citizenship and all the aid and help, hoping they would defect. Now that they haven't, they're trying to stop them by denying visas even to the family members of government officials who bring them to provide for their people.

    How low can you go?

    Hahaha etc

In an interview with Diario de Cuba, the director of Cubanet, Roberto Hechavarría, said that the suspension of funds is “good news” for the Cuban regime. “The regime will take advantage of this to impose and intensify its propaganda within Cuba and towards the Cuban-American community in South Florida,” he said.

His newspaper, the oldest Cuban independent media, created in 1994 and based in Miami, received the notification last week that the US government had canceled a $1.8 million, three-year grant from USAID, which ends this coming September.

This Wednesday, Florida Senator Rick Scott justified the situation in a hearing, pointing out that all the USAID money has not served to end the dictatorial regimes of the continent. “The Castro regime still controls Cuba; Venezuela has just stolen another election, and Ortega is getting stronger in Nicaragua,” he said. His comments echo the opinions expressed by billionaire Elon Musk and taken up by the Trump Administration, which have mocked, among many others, subsidies to “rebuild the ecosystem of the Cuban media.”

A gusano said "The situation is extreme, and at least 40 groups in the region have had to close."

At least 40 groups of 'independent' supposed dissidents they were funding then.

Bye bye USAID. For decades there has been an "anti-Castro industry" in Miami, richly funded by government grants. Thousands of worms made their living that way. They thought Marco the Narco would look after them, but no. Catastrophe!

Our hearts are with you’, Shettima says as Nigeria, Cuba strengthen ties

On Monday, March 17, the Federal Government of Nigeria and Cuba moved to strengthen the diplomatic ties between both countries.

With renewed focus on health, trade and education, Vice President Kashim Shettima described Cuba as a sacred land which every progressive will identify with.

Our hearts and souls are with you. No matter how long the night is, it will give way to the light of the dawn. We will support you in whatever way we can, especially in strengthening our partnership in healthcare and vaccination programmes,” Shettima said.

    Que risa me da...

"...the cuts have shuttered the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, Radio Marti and online platform Noticias Marti, whose mission, according to their website, was to provide “the Cuban people with news and information without censorship.”

Based in Miami, the services broadcast news about Cuba to their predominantly Cuban audience, often providing a counterpoint to that of state-run providers on the island.

News outlet Cubadebate celebrated the Trump decision, calling the programs “the most expensive, failed, and corrupt communications project in the history of the United States.”

Attempts to contact the Office of Cuba Broadcasting and Radio Marti, which is now off the air, were unsuccessful. (Big smiley)

U.S. Representative and huge worm Maria Elvira Salazar, a Florida Republican and former 'journalist', said the outlets had been vital for countering Cuban government propaganda.

“As government programs evolve, I will work with President Trump to make sure the Cuban people have the access to the uncensored news they deserve!,” she said on X.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Kari Lake, nominated by Trump to lead USAGM’s Voice of America broadcaster, has described the USAGM as “a giant rot and burden to the American taxpayer” and “not salvageable.”

Randy Alonso, editor-in-chief of Cubadebate, used similar terms, describing the USAGM output as “digital sludge.”

“The most rotten of these programs are those directed at Cuba, a nation against which billions of dollars have been spent without being able to overthrow the (Cuban) Revolution,” Alonso wrote on Wednesday.

    Thanks to the police

Recently, in the village of Alonso Rojas, Consolación del Sur, a citizen was the victim of a robbery, in this case, of a pig.

The police acted immediately and managed to capture the two perpetrators, who had already sacrificed the animal.

Currently, they are detained but part of the meat was recovered and returned to its owner.

The criminal doesn't rest, but neither does authority.

The only Cuban-born member of Congress is calling on the Trump administration to "starve the regime" (i.e. people) in Havana by cutting off some of its last economic lifelines connected to the U.S.

Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., who recently returned to the island for the first time in 64 years as part of a congressional delegation to Guantanamo Bay, said that despite the decades long economic embargo and travel restrictions, there are still many ways Americans can incidentally aid the regime.

On Thursday, Gimenez will write to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, requesting the "cessation of all travel" to and from the communist island, as well as a ban on remittances from U.S. citizens to relatives or friends there—except for specific funds approved by Secretary of State Marco Rubio

"The regime in Cuba is a listed state sponsor of terrorism, harbors criminal fugitives of American justice, and presents a clear threat to the safety of the United States and our citizens," Gimenez will write to Bessent. "They could invade or attack us at any moment, just like they haven't for the past 64 years" he added

He praised President Donald Trump for reversing the Obama-era "disastrous appeasement" policies that allowed some daylight between Havana and Washington. "You can't appease these crazy Marxist lunatics hellbent on attacking us relentlessly when we've never done anything to them".

"The murderous dictatorship in Cuba is on life support. The regime cannot even keep the lights on, and America must stand with the Cuban people to topple this pathetic gang once and for all…. The time is now."

"There's plenty of travel happening between Cuba and the United States," Gimenez said when asked how strong the current restrictions are.

"All you’ve got to do is go to MIA and you'll see all kinds of flights from the United States to Cuba and back -- that needs to stop." - he means families visiting in both directions. "It's time to stop the clear and present danger to the USA of murderous grannies visiting their dictator grandchildren!"

"So these are efforts to basically starve the regime. A lot of times when flights are going from Miami to Cuba, a lot of those people are taking goods and products, etcetera," he said. "The regime can't even provide electricity to their own people. It needs to fail on its own weight; America can't provide any more oxygen to that regime."

Gimenez added there may be some short-term pain in Miami and elsewhere, but that there is the "long-term gain" of potentially accelerating the collapse of the Castro/Diaz-Canel government, which has been otherwise cut off from U.S. trade since 1959.

When asked why Cuba appears to be treated differently than other official state sponsors of terror like Iran and Afghanistan, Gimenez said the 90-mile proximity to the U.S. and the large numbers of Cuban refugee families living in Florida and beyond do create a different dynamic.

"Many family members in Miami and in the United States try to help their [Cuba-resident] family and friends as much as possible, and they want to visit every once in a while.". But screw what they want. More important is trying to starve their families into submission to our will. We want our plantations and mansions back.

"But I’ve never gone – [until] a month ago in Guantanamo. I’ve never gone back to visit any family. I’ve never sent one penny to Cuba for anything during my time in the United States; over 60 years.". My family really love me so much and are so grateful to me. Even though I'm a rich politician in the "Yuma". They realise how murderous and dictator they are and it's better to go without until they have properly learned their lesson and surrender to my will.

"No I am definitely NOT an evil cold-hearted beast nor an utter tosser" he added.

    Robot Waiters In La Habana

Despite Cuba's ongoing power outages, one Havana restaurant is making headlines with a bold tech leap.

At Doña Alicia, a robot waiter now delivers meals, greets customers, and even shakes hands. From Alexa-powered menus to robotic service, this digital dining experience is unique in Cuba, where electricity is scarce and tech support limited.

Yet, the innovation is drawing curious locals and tourists alike, eager to witness the future of Cuban hospitality—served with a side of surprise.

Oh dear, this shutting down of the anti-Castro industry in Miami and the removal of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Cubans arriving in the wormery after "fleeing Castro's communism" has not gone down very well at all with the Grand Exilio. a Miami federal jury has found that travel booking company Expedia Group ows $29.85 million to a Cuban-American family in damages for having promoted and sold bookings to Floridians at hotels in land confiscated by the Cuban government during the early days of Fidel Castro’s revolution.

The case was filed by Mario Echevarría, one of the heirs of a Cuban family that claimed ownership of Cayo Coco, a small key off the northern coast of central Cuba, against Expedia and its affiliate sites Hotels.com and Orbitz under the 1996 Helms-Burton Act. It is the first of such lawsuits to reach a jury trial.

A fruitful visit by President Diaz Canel to Moscow.

Some major investment promised with priority for the energy and agriculture sectors. The mayor of Moscow personally sent 10 Moskvitch cars over as a gift too.

As is well known, Fidel was a 'humilde' person who never sought to be a cult. He left many orders that there were to be no statues, no streets or parks named after him. His simple tombstone has only 5 letters on it: FIDEL.

That order was followed of course in Cuba, but those crazy Russians have named a square Fidel Castro Plaza and erected a statue. It's a good statue and you can't help feeling a bit proud. The presidents went to lay a rose and pay tribute.

Less than a week after more than 500 contractors were terminated from Voice of America, U.S. Agency for Global Media senior adviser Kari Lake sent Congress a letter detailing her reduction-in-force plan to eliminate most of the roughly 800 full-time employees remaining at the government-funded news outlet.

Noting that the president directed that the agency needed to reduce its “associated personnel to the minimum presence and function required by law,” she laid out a firing plan that would bring the number of VOA positions down to just 18, while the entirety of the media agency would have a staff of just 81.

VOA news center and FM programming. Two employees each would handle the Farsi (Iran), China and Afghanistan broadcast services, and the network will retain a director.

    But.......

Notably, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting will keep all 33 of its staff, with the agency plan stating that based on Trump’s executive order, “the recommendation is to retain all positions in the Miami, FL and Marathon, FL competitive areas based on the statutory requirements for Cuba broadcasting.”
