Still surprised they didn't call up Dennis tbh

Why did a team start with a left back in goal!?!

Had no keepers due to injuries and COVID.

I feel so bad for Comoros. They were the better team and under very difficult circumstances. I don't remember cheering thia hard even for Serbia!

Reports coming out that a massive crush before the Cameroon game has caused a number of deaths before the match. Tragedy that puts football stories into perspective.

    Another shock on the cards?

What an amazing goal too .

    EDIT: 1-1.

Would be amazing if they could go out and we get Louza back tomorrow, but on the balance of play it looks far more like Malawi will end up getting smashed here, despite the draw at the half. It doesn't help they they are defending like absolute idiots.

Morocco win 2-1 so Masina and Louza stay on.

Louza was pretty impressive, I thought. Put in a pearler of a free kick from which Saiss headed onto the bar and created quite a few chances.

Not related to AFCON but we will have at least one representative at the World Cup (if the likes of Louza and Masina are still here) as Morocco have been drawn against DR Congo in the World Cup play-offs.

    Senegal vs Egypt

    Nigeria vs Ghana

    Algeria vs Cameroon

    Morocco vs DR Congo

    Tunisia vs Mali

Is that the easy draw then?

    Edit: Ah I see, Kayembe.

No it was me. I couldn't think of a DR Congo player in our squad.

Hoping for a big win for Ivory Coast today.

Crazy that Max Gradel (remember him) is starting over Zaha or Cornet. They do have a seriously strong squad though, probably the deepest in the tournament.

Cornet on, let’s see some flying tackles from Egypt, or a goal from him to keep them in it.

Fuccking hell, we're one penalty away from Cornet winging his way straight back to the grim north west.

We are now seeing the continent of Africa wreak its terrible vengeance on us, as the curse takes hold.

Expect Senegal to romp to the final by an aggregate score of 26-1, at which point Sarr is forced to start, breaking his ankle on one of those Olympus Mons-size pitch craters in the 6th minute.

I think I’ve seen more red cards than goals, so either that or someone breaks his legs.

Gareth Southgate chose the penalty takers.

What's the slogan for this tournament?

"If you hate goals, you'll love the African Nations"?

Quality of this current match is just unbelievably bad; shocking.

    Another 0-0 looming .

Is the finishing that bad or defensive players and keepers good ?

Well I guess it's mainly down to the teams not being very good - AFAIK neither Mali nor Equatorial Guinea have ever qualified for the World Cup.

Africa have a reputation for producing really good, even world class players but rarely delivering on the world stage - the best performance by an African team was Cameroon reaching the quarter finals in 1990 and they've not done much since. With Nigeria in something of a slump (how on earth has Dennis hardly managed to get any caps for them while Tufan, not much older than him, has got all those caps for Turkey?) I suppose the best African teams are the Ivory Coast, Ghana and Senegal but they don't always qualify for the World Cup. Tunisia get to the finals regularly, but like Saudi Arabia don't do anything.

Has anyone watched the Asian Cup, if so, how does it compare in quality? I'm surprised Saudi Arabia have won it so many times (just one time less than Japan) and South Korea have only won it twice.

Senegal got to the World Cup Quarter finals in 2002 and Ghana also got to the World Cup quarter finals in 2010 and without looking I’d imagine that both involved an extra round to get there compared to 1990. They were unlucky with the Suarez incident and then going out on pens.

In the case of Ghana it could’ve been seen as progress for Africa on the world stage, but they’re still relying on most of that team now including both of the Ayew’s and hence why they exited the Afcon so early. So really it appears like it just one team peaking, rather than signs of the whole continent progressing.
