It was an absolute Andre Gray moment. Who'd have thought it could happen to the little man?

Still, Messi confirmed as the greatest and Neymar and Richarlison crying.

    Perfect.

They relaid the turf at the Maracana a week ago GD. Did the job but as Messi turns his standing foot gives way and you can see the turf turning too. Doesn't matter. Messi has played better in other finals and lost. Winning was everything. And according to Scaloni he was nursing a hamstring strain.

Golden glove, top scorer and best player of the tournament awards:

Team of the tournament. Cannot argue with any of the choices. Romero despite only playing three games deserved his spot. He brings a calmness to the defence, incredible maturity and poise and when he was out of the Argentina side the difference was clear to see. The best defender they have produced since Samuel. Our own Pervis also was picked. Not such a great season in La Liga but the ability is obvious. Shame we decided to let him disappear.

So the Libertadores resumed almost immediately after the Copa America. The biggest drama came with Boca losing 3-1 on penalties to Atletico Mineiro. Not much you would think of that but there was a huge scuffle after the match on the pitch and in the dressing room.

The local police wanted to detain several Boca players. The Boca team refused to come out unless they were all allowed to leave. Juan Roman Riquelme the president of Boca called the situation disgusting and the officiating a joke. The referee in the first leg chalked off a perfectly legal goal for Boca. He was later suspended along with the VAR officials. In the second leg not one but two perfectly legal goals were chalked off by the referee and VAR. No wonder there are accusations of match fixing and Boca are extraordinarily irate.

This might be the first time Boca fans cheer for River Plate who meet Mineiro in the quarterfinals. Ostojich the referee and the VAR team are looking at disciplinary action although that will not change this result.

La selección está primero. All the players called up by Scaloni for the next round of three WC qualifiers will travel back to Argentina regardless of what their clubs have said.

  8. Urgh! We've only had 3 games and we're already on a 2 week bloody break.

Even though it may do us a bit of a favour this time, bloody international weeks really boil my pee pee.

And probably a lot of chaos as clubs try to stop players going to the their national teams incase they have to isolate afterwards.

Romero, Lo Celso, Buendia and Martinez have already fled the country. Apparently Richard Masters is in a Airbus trying to head them off.

If they had held out to win, it would be akin to finding a pound coin on the titanic. They lost to Luxembourg recently. Maybe it’s a turning point, but I doubt it.

Japan lost at home to Oman!

And South Korea held by Iraq.

    Strange results .

Very impressive performance from England tonight I thought, just bossed it from start to finish.

    They.....

Zero expectations pre kick-off after the Luxembourg debacle, but after taking the lead and seeing how well we were defending, that ending felt like a kick in the balls! Think I'd rather have lost 3-0 than seeing a brave performance go unrewarded with a cruel ending like that. Very young squad now with plenty new faces which will certainly take a while to see consistent results.

Yes best way possible to respond to the sickening racist abuse.
Good to see Andorra win even if only against fellow minnows San Marino.

I thought that was a potential banana skin last night all things considered, but it couldn’t have been any less so. We’re definitely in a different tier now to decades gone by, in that we swat the rank and file teams away with ease. We just need to bridge that very last gap now…

Sorry WatfordIreland, with the benefit of mature reflection, I should have probably used we instead of they. It is most likely a subconscious thing, as I have found it hard to support our national team more recently with the outrageous goings on in the FAI for decades. It was more enjoyable when "we" were all more innocent and winning shootouts against the Romanians. I could not watch the game on Wednesday myself but was listening to the second half on the way back from a match, and, to be fair, I was very disappointed when we conceded the equaliser, and then the second blow was very hard to take, when the winner was scored, but there was a sense of inevitability about it. I agree that we have a young squad and perhaps a chance to rebuild. My original text was perhaps hiding the hurt!.

Didn’t Capello and Sven always romp through qualifying? Maybe my bad memory.

Wow, I love an underdog getting something from a game against all the odds. Watched the second half of Ireland v Azerbaijan and what a one way contest it was. Fair play to the plucky minnows though. They battled hard and ensured their home crowd went home happy with a rare point. Real fairytale stuff.

I’m afraid so. The FAI have messed up Irish soccer for years to come. Yes I said it, soccer.

Argentina waltzed past Venezuela despite a horror knee high tackle from Martinez on Messi.

The Albieceleste next take on Brazil with the selecao at home and undefeated on top of CONMEBOL qualification with seven wins out of seven and smarting after the Copa final defeat. Kick off is at eight post meridian tonight.

All the African World Cup qualification games are on FIFA TV and streaming on youtube. One of the best matches could be South Africa versus the Black Stars tomorrow.

The third round stage of the AFC qualifiers has commenced. Twelve teams split into two groups of six. The top two in each automatically qualifying for Qatar with the third place sides playing each other. The winner of that then goes into an intercontinental playoff.

In Group A South Korea were held at home rather surprisingly by Iraq. I expect there will be fireworks when the Iraq side play Iran who top the group after beating Syria 1-0. Australia top group B after thumping China 3-0 something the CCP cannot spin. The Blue Samurai suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat to Oman.

Brazil Argentina suspended as some numpty refuses to leave the pitch. Four Argentine players are being fielded who apparently don't have the requisite forms for COVID protocols. Only in CONMEBOL. Pretty shabby from Brazil. Embarrassing really.

    Absolute farce. :D
